Chapter 3

Penulis: Mountain River
Christopher arrived fast. He took one look at me and knew my condition was dire.

"Lay her flat! Hurry!" he ordered.

Elsie, shaking so hard she could barely think, obeyed without question. Together, they eased me onto the cleanest patch of floor they could find.

Christopher snapped open his kit, but then he went pale. The supplies he carried for routine house calls were nowhere near enough for a hemorrhage this severe.

"I'm short on the right meds," he said, his voice tight with alarm. "We need a coagulant from the central infirmary immediately. But they won't release it without 100 dollars upfront."

Elsie emptied her pockets. The crumpled bills didn't even add up to five dollars. "Please," she begged, tears catching her words. "Can't you put it on account? Alpha Cassian will approve it when he gets here!"

Christopher hesitated. The infirmary never ran tabs. It was always cash and carry. But he looked at the blood spreading under me and the way my eyes kept drifting shut, and his jaw set with a hard resolve.

"I'll ask Alpha Cassian for approval," he said, pulling out his phone.

The phone rang and rang until someone finally answered. It wasn't Cassian but Mira.

"Alpha Cassian is in a meeting," she said. "Call back later."

"This is the pack healer, Christopher Murray," he said quickly. "Luna Sutton is hemorrhaging. She needs a coagulant right away, but we don't have the funds. Can we authorize credit and—"

"Credit?" Mira's tone shot up, sharp and nasty. "Absolutely not! Not a single cent! That is the rule! She's faking it again to fool people. Hasn't she pulled this trick enough times already? She just wants to swindle money! I'm telling you, make her reflect on her actions! No one is allowed to help her!"

"She is not faking this. She needs treatment now—" Christopher began to explain again.

"Oh, I get it," Mira cut in. "She paid you to say that, right? I knew she was hiding cash somewhere! Stop bothering Alpha Cassian with this nonsense. He is busy!"

The line went dead.

Christopher bristled at having his professional integrity questioned. He stared at the phone for a moment, then muttered a curse and pulled out his bank card. "Fine. I'll pay! The coagulant will be ready when we get there!

"Hurry! Get her to the infirmary now! If we don't, she won't just lose the pup. She could lose her life!"

After the emergency treatment, Christopher told Elsie to carry me on her back and rush to the infirmary.

When we burst through the doors, Christopher stopped short. The shelves were empty, and even the equipment was gone.

"Where are the meds I just ordered?" he snapped at a nurse tidying an empty room.

The nurse winced. "I'm sorry. Ms. Langford said her heart felt off, so Alpha Cassian had everything moved to her room, including the coagulant you requested."

Christopher shook with anger. For a moment, he looked like he might tear the place apart. Then, his shoulders dropped, and he stood there, at a loss for what to do next.

That was when Cassian's Beta, Leon Jackson, came around the corner. He saw the blood and the way I sagged in Elsie's arms, and his eyes widened in shock.

"Luna Sutton? What happened to you?" He rushed over to check on me, then he quickly pulled out his phone.

"Alpha Cassian, it's me! I'm at the infirmary! Luna Sutton is here and she looks critical!"

On the other end, Cassian sounded annoyed. "You must be mistaken. If she were out, the first place she'd go is the spa, or maybe a massage. You've got it wrong. Anyway, I don't have time for this."

With that, he hung up.

Leon lowered his hand, guilt and pity written all over him. There was nothing he could do.

Christopher let out a long, helpless sigh.

Elsie pressed a fist to her mouth to choke back a sob.

A wave of fire seared my back as my belly cramped again and again, the pain blurring everything around me.

I listened to their voices as the heartbeats inside me grew faint. Tears slid from the corners of my eyes, and at last, I let them fall shut, surrendering to despair.

...

Cassian had just finished paying for Mira's treatment when he stepped back into her room. She lounged back against the pillows and said softly, "Alpha Cassian, I want butter cookies. Could you get me some?"

"Cookies?" Cassian paused. The word stirred old memories.

Long ago, Sutton used to bake cookies for him on quiet afternoons. She'd slip on an apron and smile as she held a warm cookie to his lips, her eyes shining with love.

How long had it been since he'd tasted one?

The thought brought an unbidden irritation crawling under his skin.

He left the room to clear his head, but a broken, muffled crying sifted through the wall from the room next door.

It was Elsie's voice.

A jolt of unease went through him, rendering him uneasy. He quickly shoved the door open.

Elsie was folded over my cold body, shaking so hard she could barely breathe. "Luna Sutton, how could this happen? You're gone, and so is the pup!"

The moment the truth hit, Cassian's arrogance collapsed like a house of cards. He bent so low before my father that blood from his split lip spattered the floor. This was the most humble I had ever seen him."Alpha Charles, I was wrong!" he babbled, pathetic as a dog begging for scraps. "I didn't know Sutton was your daughter. I love her! I only wanted to take her home!""Enough!" Dad snapped, his voice a low growl of pure fury. "You dare say you love her? You let another she-wolf whip her! You ignored her cries and killed my grandson! Letting you and your pack go bankrupt is already mercy!"Realizing my father would never forgive him, Cassian crawled to me, clutching at the hem of my pants with bloodied fingers."Sutton, my Luna, look at me! I know I was wrong! I regret it! I haven't slept well these past three months! I tore the world apart trying to find you! I can't live without you! Please, forgive me! If you ask your dad to restore the contracts, I'll do anything!"There was

My words landed like a blade, straight through Cassian's paper-thin pride.Color flooded his face. Whatever control he had left snapped."Sutton, you liar!" he roared. "You're out of your mind! You're coming home with me, where you can get your head on straight!"He hauled me over his shoulder and turned for the door."Stand down!""Put Sutton down!"Gamma sentries and elders surged at once, a wall of muscle and teeth closing around Cassian. He only sneered, his eyes burning with possessive heat. "Move! She's my mate! I'm taking her home! No one gets in my way!""You really are hopeless," I said, calm even with the world upside down on his shoulder. "Open your eyes! This is the Dark Moon pack, not Blood Moon. My father is the Alpha here. Try laying a finger on me again and see what happens!""Your father is the Alpha of the Dark Moon pack?" Cassian actually laughed, the sound harsh and disbelieving. "Please! You're a Rogue with no family! Stop spinning tales! It's disgusting!"

Three months later, at the Dark Moon pack, I stood at the head of the council table in a sharp black suit, my hair pinned neatly back. I was presenting the latest financial report to the elders. For three months, I had done nothing but work. The she-wolf who once made herself small for love was gone."As for the acquisition in the eastern quarry, my view is..."Suddenly, the doors slammed inward so hard the hinges screamed.Gamma sentries scrambled to block the intruder, but he shook them off and stormed straight toward me.It was Cassian. He was leaner now, jaw shadowed with stubble. His eyes were shot through with red like a cornered wolf. The moment he saw me in the high seat, he rushed over and gripped my wrist so hard it felt like the bones might snap, completely ignoring the elders seated at the table."Sutton! I knew you were here!" His voice was fevered, almost unhinged. "Enough of this! How dare you fake your death just to get my attention? Well, you've got it now! We'r

The door eased open, and my father stepped in with a cup of bitter herbal tea. He took one look at me curled on my side, and the raw pity in his eyes almost undid me."Sutton, sit up and drink this," he said, setting the cup on the nightstand. He sat on the edge of the bed and smoothed a hand over my hair. "I know you're shattered, but your body comes first."I lifted my head. My eyes were red and swollen. "Dad, the pup is gone. I'm useless. I couldn't protect him."My father pulled me into his arms. His voice trembled with sorrow, but his resolve was firm. "It wasn't your fault. This is on Cassian! He killed my grandson! I'll see the Blood Moon pack pay for it!"His promise and the warmth of his embrace were the only things holding me together. I buried my face in his shoulder and cried until the worst of it ebbed away.Three years ago, in this same room, I had defied my father for the first time."Dad, I love him. I'll give up everything for him!" I had said."Foolish! If you

"Luna Sutton's gone, and so is her pup..."The words hit Cassian like a physical blow. He froze, staring at my body under the white sheet, his mind going utterly blank. He couldn't reconcile with it. He refused to believe I was dead, especially after he'd just accused me of faking a pregnancy that morning. "What the hell are you talking about?" Cassian lunged, grabbing Christopher by the collar, his eyes bloodshot with a primal fury. "She's faking it! I'm ordering you to bring her back! I don't care what it costs or what you have to use! Do it!"Christopher, rattled by the shaking, steadied himself and spoke quietly. "Alpha Cassian, please... You need to calm down... Luna Sutton has no vital signs. She was two months along. She bled out. We missed the window...""Two months..." Cassian's whole body started to shake. He let go of Christopher and stumbled backward until the wall caught him.In his head, my hoarse voice roared back from the memory, "Cassian, help me! I'm pregnant!"
