Chapter 1

Author: Hammer Titan
I'd only just printed out the divorce agreement about half an hour ago. But before that, I'd spent the entire night sitting on the living room couch.

The dozen or so dishes I'd slaved over for hours sat untouched on the dining room table. Even the Ultradude cake I'd made earlier had melted into a puddle of goo.

It had been my daughter, Tiana Jenkins' birthday yesterday. My wife, Sabrina Lawson, had given me specific instructions to make preparations for the birthday celebration because she was coming home with Tiana.

However, I'd waited at home for hours in vain. In the end, the only message I'd received in a roundabout way was that Instagram story of the four of them that Joshua Sears had posted.

The irony.

Sabrina had never thought that I would ever bring up divorce. She frowned and tore the agreement in half. Her face was full of disdain as she said, "Ashton Jenkins, what game are you playing this time? I just took Tiana to meet Joshua and his son, and I forgot to tell you about it. That's all!"

Then, her gaze flitted over to the untouched dishes on the table, and a hint of unease appeared in her eyes.

She softened her tone and said, "Alright, fine. It was my fault for forgetting to tell you about last night. I'll be more careful next time. I'll clean up here. Go and rest for a bit. I'll take you and Tiana out for some dessert later on."

Sabrina had always been like this. She would always hit me with the stick before handing me the carrot.

Each time, she always knew that she'd gone overboard, but she would still refuse to apologize and would simply try to soften the blow for me so I would feel less bad about it.

If I didn't respond the way she wanted me to, then she would stop talking to me altogether until I admitted defeat in the end.

In the past, I'd always been the one who would reach out and apologize first. But this time, I brought out another copy of the divorce agreement and threw it down onto the coffee table.

"I made a dozen copies. Go ahead and tear however many of them you want."

Sabrina was so mad that she flung a plate to the floor.

She then glared at me impatiently and said, "Let's just get it straight. You're just jealous that Tiana likes Joshua more than you. But don't you dare forget, Ashton, that you're the one who owes him everything! Tiana and I are only looking after him because we're trying to pay him back for your sins!"

My sins? I had no sins!

Joshua and I used to be close buddies. Once, he'd invited me out into the hills when we were in our third year of college. When we'd finally made our way back home, it had already been dark out, and Joshua had insisted on taking a shortcut. He'd told me that a friend was waiting for him there.

So, we'd parted ways.

However, when I'd woken up after that, Sabrina had rushed into my room and grabbed me harshly by the collar, demanding to know why I'd pushed Joshua into the hands of the thugs while I'd escaped. She'd also demanded to know why I hadn't even bothered filing a police report.

I hadn't even regained my senses and had no idea what was going on.

Eventually, I'd found out that Joshua had run into a bunch of thugs while taking the shortcut, and he'd gotten beaten up so badly that both of his legs had been broken.

He'd told them that the thugs had been after me and that he'd wanted to fight them off with me. But apparently, I'd shoved him right into the group of thugs before running off on my own.

Obviously, he'd been lying.

I'd tried defending myself, but nobody had believed me. Also, the surveillance cameras hadn't been working at that time, so I'd ended up being framed like this for years.

Ever since that incident, it felt as though I'd become a sinner in everybody's eyes.

Mom and Dad, who'd always been very protective of their reputation, screamed at me for being such a heartless person. Meanwhile, Sabrina had called me a cold-blooded reptile.

And then, under the guise of compensation, they'd given Joshua all the love and attention that should have been mine.

They'd even taken my daughter away from me, saying that I was a horrible bastard who didn't deserve to raise a kid like her.

That was the main reason why my relationship with Tiana was literally non-existent.

Yet, I loved her very much and kept trying to find ways to mend our relationship.

I looked at Tiana, who was also looking back at me. Her eyes were cold and full of disgust, as if I were her biggest enemy.

"You ruined Mommy's and Joshua's lives! If it weren't for you, Joshua would have been my daddy!"

I shuddered. My heart felt like it was being torn to pieces.

"Who told you that?"

Tiana frowned. "Isn't that the truth?"

I looked at Sabrina. Even at this point, I still hoped that she would have an explanation for all this.

However, she just avoided my gaze and said, "Tiana always thought that if that incident hadn't happened, I would've married Joshua instead."

Had this been in the past, I would've asked her why she wasn't explaining herself.

After all, I was the one who'd grown up with her, and I was the one who'd introduced Joshua to her as my friend. I was the one who'd been her actual boyfriend…

But now, I simply couldn't care less.

I didn't care what Tiana thought of me anymore either. After all, very soon, she wouldn't have anything to do with me.

I grabbed my suitcase and headed out the door.

"I'll see you at the courthouse when you've made up your mind."

Although the post never explicitly mentioned names, surprisingly, plenty of my ex-schoolmates left tons of comments under it.It was just a matter of time before Joshua's misdeeds were exposed in the open for all to see and judge. That wasn't all. Sabrina, Mom, and Dad were all dragged into the mud along with him. Over the next few days, my phone seemed like it would explode from the sheer number of calls I received on a daily basis.I stared at the culprit, who was now standing before me. I said helplessly, "You little minx, who told you to poke your nose into this?"Bianca just grinned happily as she served me a perfect cut of steak. "Don't get mad, mister. I know you're not the kind of person who shows his scars just to make others feel guilty, but why should you stay silent when you're the victim? "If they don't even know the extent of hurt they've caused you, they would probably just think of it as a tiny inconvenience. "That's nowhere near enough to make up for all the su

When Joshua heard that I had a gift prepared for him, his eyes grew alert as he became completely on guard.I guess he still had some sort of self-awareness after all. He knew how much I loathed him, so it wouldn't make any sense for me to prepare a gift for him in the first place. But before he could reject me, a young lady in a short pixie cut walked out among the crowd of onlookers who'd stopped to watch us.Joshua's face went pale as soon as he caught sight of the woman. He blurted, "Dolly Brown!"Dolly puffed out some cigarette smoke, giving Joshua the once-over a few times."It's been a long while, ex-boyfriend. It seems like you've been living quite the life. By the way, you told me that you'd marry me as soon as you'd gotten your hands on the Jenkins family's fortune. Does that promise still count?"Dad's eyes widened in shock as he looked at Joshua in disbelief.Joshua hurriedly shook his head. "Mom, Dad, don't listen to her! Have you already forgotten? It was her! She'

Three months ago, one of the thugs involved in beating Joshua up had just been released from prison.I'd met up with him on the very day he'd gotten out.I recalled Joshua had told me back then that he'd had a friend waiting for him at the shortcut. I guessed that if that "friend" really existed, then he would be the only person in the world who could prove my innocence.I'd gone through all of the people in Joshua's circle of friends, but I'd found nothing. That was how I'd come to the conclusion that the "friend" he'd mentioned might've been one of the thugs involved. As it turned out, I didn't end up just learning about the so-called friend's name—I even learned the entire story behind the deliberate cover-up.I was going to reveal the truth the next day and destroy Joshua with one lethal blow.In a way, I would also be giving Sabrina a very memorable divorce. After making all the necessary arrangements, I drowsily went back to sleep. In my dreams, I felt as though someone k

I had to admit that Bianca was way better than Sabrina at seeing through liars from the start.I took the second apple she peeled for me and chuckled mockingly. "Oh, maybe his depression got triggered or something."I paused for a bit and made sure to emphasize the next few words. "Severe depression, I believe."Bianca giggled. "That's not severe depression. That's schizophrenia. I strongly suggest that he be taken to the psychiatric ward so he'll recover faster."I burst out laughing at that. Meanwhile, Sabrina just stared at me in disbelief. She'd never thought that I would be as cold-hearted as this and make fun of Joshua, who was ill, along with another stranger. However, what shook her the most was that while I behaved like an emotionless robot when with her, I could be so expressive and laugh along with another woman.A spark of jealousy rose in her chest. She yelled, "That's enough, Ashton Jenkins! How did you change into someone like this? No wonder your parents are dis

Sabrina frowned when she heard me referring to her as my ex-wife.I thought that she would yell at me and accuse me of losing my temper and playing hard-to-get again, like she did in the past. But to my surprise, she just sighed and held my hand as she said, "Are you still mad at me? Honey, I admit that I ignored you in the past, but I'll pay more attention to you now, alright? Can you stop being angry at me? Where do you think you can go after separating from me?"I had no idea why Sabrina was suddenly acting like a whole different person, but when she said the last sentence, I immediately felt indignant."The world is wide and vast. Why would you think that I have no place to go?"Sabrina replied, "You know that's not what I meant."I was so frustrated that I didn't even want to talk anymore.I'd bet Sabrina just didn't want to give me half of her assets. Otherwise, I simply couldn't think of any reason why she wouldn't want to divorce me.I caught sight of Joshua still linge

Bianca's words were so shocking that I nearly jumped up from the bed.Meanwhile, Sabrina's voice turned shrill on the other end of the line. "What did you say? Who are you?"However, Bianca had already hung up on her. She even turned the phone off afterward. When she saw me glaring at her, she grinned meekly and said, "I didn't mean to say that you were dead. I just thought that your wife was being ridiculous."Her own husband is lying in the hospital, and yet, she didn't even ask about you or how you're doing. Honestly speaking… you've got quite terrible taste in women."I just smiled a little helplessly and bitterly, mumbling, "Not just my wife. I'm terrible at picking my parents and my close buddies too."Even the daughter I had turned out to be the wrong choice. My stomach suddenly growled loudly. Looking sheepish, I asked, "Sorry, but could you get me something to eat?"I hadn't eaten anything since that night, and I was feeling ravenous.Bianca immediately took out her p
