"Valerie, are you out of your mind?!"

Marcus snatched the file and slapped it hard on my lab bench.

"This is a direct order! You're the only one in the North who can handle this!"

I lowered my eyes. I slowly wiped the vial in my hand. "I said, I'm not taking it."

"Look at this!" Marcus flipped to the last page.

"High-grade mutant wolfsbane infection. Her organs are failing. The antidote window is less than twenty-four hours. That's a living, breathing pack member!"

I slammed the vial down.

"Valerie, you're the only one. Nobody else in the North can isolate this toxin and synthesize a cure."

Marcus leaned in. His voice dropped to a whisper.

"If you don't go, she dies in that isolation room."

I turned and looked at him coldly.

"Marcus. You've been with me for six years. When have I ever turned down a case that could break new ground in wolfsbane research?"

He froze. "Then why this one?"

I didn't answer.

Marcus panicked. He grabbed my arm.

"This is a special mandate from the High Council! If you refuse, they'll strip your research credentials. You could even face exile!"

I gently brushed his hand away. My voice was ice.

"Let them exile me. I don't care. Even if the Alpha King himself came, I still wouldn't go."

Marcus flushed red. His chest heaved. His heavy breathing reeked of anxiety.

He had been with me for six years. Right from when I started in this abandoned warehouse lab.

He had watched me pull 72-hour shifts at this bench until I collapsed. He’d seen me drag a dying rogue back from the brink. Only to squat in the hallway and puke my guts out after.

But he had never seen me like this. Stone-cold. Untouchable.

"Fine." Marcus finally gave up. He slammed the file on the table. "I trust your judgment."

He walked to the door and stopped. His voice sounded tight.

"But she's just a poor girl. She probably hasn't even had her first full moon shift. If you change your mind, we are ready to roll."

The door clicked shut. I was alone in the lab.

My eyes landed on Hector's photo in the file.

He looked even more imposing than ten years ago. That Alpha aura practically leaped off the page.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold. Selfish. Arrogant.

When my pup was in the ER. When the air was leaving her lungs, bit by bit.

He was holding Chloe's daughter in a VIP healing room. Promising to protect her forever.

He said Chloe was the only person he ever wronged. So he would do everything to make it up to her and her kid.

I closed my eyes. I swept the file straight into the biohazard incinerator without blinking.

The intercom shrilled. It was the front desk.

"Dr. Valerie? A VIP used top-tier clearance. They forced a connection to your private line."

I paused for three seconds. I pressed the button. "Patch it through."

"Is this Dr. Valerie of the biochemical toxicology lab?"

The voice was deep and commanding. It carried that absolute authority of an Alpha.

Ten years. I still recognized it instantly.

"Speaking."

My voice was raspy and harsh.

After my daughter died, I cried for weeks.

Plus, nine years of harsh chemicals and silver dust had ruined my vocal cords. My original voice was gone.

He wouldn't recognize me.

"Good. This is Hector. You should know the mission details by now."

He paused. His tone dripped with charity and arrogance.

"Name your price. If I can do it, it's yours. Any Council resource you need, I will provide."

I took a deep breath. I pushed down my restless wolf and answered calmly.

"I'm not taking the job."

A bright red cut trailed down his sharp jawline. The potent silver venom hit his bloodstream instantly. Shutting down his wolf's healing. The hiss of burning flesh filled the air. Hector shook violently from the pain. Cold sweat mixed with mud dripped down. But he stubbornly didn't retreat an inch. Instead, he straightened his back. He pushed his vulnerable neck deeper against the blade. A sacrificial surrender to his mate. The silver blade cut deeper. Blood poured. Dying his expensive shirt red. "Do it, Valerie." His blood-red eyes locked onto me. Suffocating heartbreak and despair in his gaze. "If you want, I'll gladly die by your hand. You can rip my heart out right now, and I won't complain." He looked like a desperate believer. Trying to trade death for an ounce of my pity. Watching this crying man, I suddenly found it totally laughable. I didn't draw the knife. I loosened my grip and glared at him. "Rip out your heart?" I gave a short, cold laugh. Dripping with mock

The sharp crack of bone was deafening in the night. Chloe let out a blood-curdling scream. She slammed into the mud like a broken ragdoll. She clutched her grotesquely twisted right leg. Rolling in pain. Hector looked down at her. Zero mercy in his eyes. "Shut up." His voice was absolute zero. Reeking of death. Chloe twitched in agony. Tears, mud, and bloody foam ran down her face. "Hector! You're crazy! It's me, Chloe! How could you do this to me!" "I gave you chances." Hector's eyes were cruel. "But you didn't just kill my flesh and blood. You dared to try and touch her." He turned his head. Glared coldly at the guards. "Shatter her other kneecap." The guards stepped up without hesitation. Another sickening crunch. Paired with Chloe's broken screams. Both her legs were completely ruined. She nearly passed out from the pain. Twitching on the ground like a dying maggot. "Drag her away." Hector ordered with freezing breath. The cruelest banishment. "Dump her deep in the

"Hector! Let me explain!" Chloe was losing her mind. She crawled to Hector's feet. Clinging to his muddy pants. "Those reports are fake! Valerie forged them to frame me!" She sobbed. Trying to spark some pity. Even releasing a slick, desperate Omega scent in a pathetic bid for sympathy. Hector didn't say a word. He just stared down at her. His once proud eyes were boiling with enough killer intent to eat her alive. The Alpha pressure was crushing the air. No one could breathe. Chloe sensed the deadly danger. She shook like a leaf. She quickly switched tactics. Pulled her best trick. "Even if I made a mistake! That was ten years ago!" She shrieked hysterically. "Did you forget how I saved you?! When that rogue attacked, I took the knife for you! I almost died that rainy night!" She yanked at Hector's coat, screaming at the top of her lungs. "For the sake of that scar, forgive me this once. Please. Just go save my daughter! She's in the ICU waiting for you! Once she lives, yo

"Tell me! What happened to our pup?!" Hector lunged at me like a madman. His Alpha aura screaming destruction. His eyes were blood-red. Filled with impossible despair. He tried to grab my shoulders. I stepped back coldly. Dodging him. His hands hovered in the air. He was trembling. His bones grinding. Before he could freak out again, a deafening roar tore through the night sky. Less than twenty minutes. A black chopper from the Pack Enforcers touched down brutally outside the lab. Whipping up a storm of wind. The heavy draft blew over the junk in the yard. Breaking the deadlock. The cabin door flew open. A terrified but unharmed Maya stumbled out. Escorted by two heavily armed guards. "Maya!" Marcus let out a ragged cry. He shoved past the guards. He threw himself forward and hugged his daughter tight. "Dad!" Maya was shaking. She hugged him back desperately. Father and daughter fell to the freezing mud, sobbing their hearts out. Seeing Maya safe, my tight nerves finall

Hector's wild laughter stopped dead. When his eyes hit the ghastly scar on my face and neck, his superiority completely broke. That overwhelming Alpha dominance violently spiraled out of control. His smug arrogance shattered into pure disbelief. He never expected this. A woman reeking of chemicals, no scent at all, spitting such venom. Dead silence hung in the air. Hector stared at the mangled scar on my nape. The place where his unique mate mark used to be. Now just a patch of ugly, dead flesh. His proud, oppressive Alpha aura completely short-circuited. His furious pheromones shattered like glass. Bouncing around the tiny courtyard. Crushing the nerves of every lower-ranked wolf here. "Valerie?" His body stiffened. His massive frame stumbled back a step. His voice shook like he'd seen a ghost. His cold eyes slowly turned feral red. Yeah. In his eyes, I was dead and buried. Ten years ago, during that brutal rogue attack. He pulled all my Elite Guards away just to save Chlo

He glanced at Marcus. Bone-chilling eyes. "Or your partner's daughter. Tonight, she guards the entire sector alone. One girl, patrolling past the border wards, surrounded by those feral beasts." Marcus's face turned deathly pale. "You're threatening me with my daughter's life!" Marcus's voice shook. Hector didn't answer. He just looked back at me. "And this trash lab of yours. If my daughter dies... Tomorrow, this place gets leveled. I'll burn it to the ground." Chloe stepped forward again. Begging eyes. "Dr. Valerie. Hector and I grew up together. My daughter is like his own flesh and blood. Please save her, okay?" She reached out, trying to grab my arm to play nice. "My daughter is in there. She must be so scared. So cold. The wolfsbane is melting her from the inside out!" I yanked myself back. I dodged her touch. "Don't touch me." Chloe's hand froze in midair. A flash of annoyance crossed her face. Then she quickly switched back to her pitiful, wronged look. "Sorry. I
