Chapter 2

Author: Melon Seed
As I stood at the familiar front door, I suddenly remembered what had happened four years ago.

That day was supposed to be the day Steven accompanied me to my prenatal checkup.

But when I pushed open the bedroom door, I saw Steven and Natalie tangled together on our bed.

My smiling face in the wedding portrait seemed almost mocking now, smeared with the ugliness of what they'd done.

The portrait fell to the floor and shattered from the force of their movements.

The sound woke them up. And it shattered my heart, too.

Steven ran toward me like a madman. His eyes were filled with pain.

Then I felt warm blood running down my legs.

That day, I lost the three most important people in my life.

My husband, who had grown up with me. My best friend, who had been like family. And my seven-month-old baby.

That suffocating feeling came rushing back. My hands shook uncontrollably as I tried to enter the door code.

I tried my birthday and Steven's birthday, but both were wrong.

I had only one chance left. My hand trembled before I finally entered Natalie's birthday.

The lock clicked open.

I pushed the door open in a daze. Then I froze.

The house I'd destroyed in a breakdown four years ago had been completely restored.

Steven had taken the home design I'd spent six months carefully planning for our marriage and used it to build a home for Natalie.

The wall where our wedding portrait once hung was now covered with pictures of Natalie.

There were pictures of her eating, sleeping, and wrapping her arms around Steven's neck while she playfully clung to him.

Each photo captured his unmistakable tenderness toward her.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

For the past four years, Steven had video-called me every time he went somewhere to tell me where he was.

I had no idea how he'd managed to spend every day with Natalie behind my back.

The woman on the phone couldn't help but sneer. "Four years ago, Steven was afraid you'd be heartbroken, so he moved the baby's ashes here. Then he used visiting the baby as an excuse to spend time with Natalie and build a new home with her. Look closely at the pictures on the wall. The oldest one was taken ten years ago."

I froze. My eyes locked onto the photograph.

It was a picture of Steven and Natalie kissing on my birthday ten years ago.

Back then, Steven and I had only just started dating. We had also just rescued Natalie after her boss tried to sexually assault her.

On my birthday, the two of them had ordered a cake for me at the same restaurant.

Then, while they were rushing back to surprise me, a heavy storm trapped them on the road.

That night, I ran all over town with two umbrellas, desperately searching for them.

They talked about everything from love and romance to their dreams for the future. Little by little, they fell for each other.

Back then, I was only worried about whether they would catch a cold. I was too stupid to notice the restrained longing in their eyes.

I had always believed our broken love could somehow be repaired. But it had been rotten from the very beginning.

It wasn't just the last four years.

My heart ached. The cold spread through my body until I was trembling.

I couldn't stay in that house any longer. I held my baby's ashes tightly against my chest and prepared to leave.

But just as I reached the door, I suddenly heard laughter and lively voices coming from downstairs.

Our mutual friend of ten years, who had also grown up with me in the orphanage for 20 years like a sister, Aurelia Vane, was surrounding Natalie. Natalie was holding a baby in her arms. Aurelia showered her with congratulations.

Steven was smiling, but he kept looking down at his phone.

Natalie pressed her lips together before smiling and linking her arm through his. "Steven, we're married now, and we have a child. I think we should find a chance to tell Melody the truth. She's been fooled by us for ten years. It's kind of sad."

Steven immediately tightened his grip around his phone.

Then he said firmly, "If we tell her the truth, we'll be pushing her over the edge. She already had a breakdown four years ago. Besides, all we need is a fake marriage certificate to keep her quiet. There's no reason to tell her."

His casual words hit me like a slap across the face.

I walked out slowly, my voice hoarse. "There's no need to go through all that trouble. I don't want to be your wife anymore."

As my assistant helped me out of Steven's car, she asked worriedly, "Melody, the marriage between the two families isn't even settled yet. Why did you lie to Steven and provoke him? What if he gets so angry that he ruins your engagement? What will you tell Mr. Quintero then? He'll definitely take back everything you have now."I rubbed my arm, which was red from Steven's tight grip, and smiled. "Because an arranged marriage was never what I wanted. Going from one man's daughter to another man's wife won't give me real power in the Quintero family. What I want is to throw everything into complete chaos."Just as I expected, Steven launched a ruthless attack on the Blackwoods the very next day. He was willing to hurt his own company if it meant taking down the Blackwoods.Blackwood Group and Palmer Group reported each other for tax fraud and tax evasion. They also exposed problems with each other's products. Both families tried to win me over and get me to help them destroy the other sid

"Melody, what did you just say? Please explain!" Steven's eyes were red as he grabbed my hand before I could close the car door. He desperately waited for an answer."Mr. Palmer, it's none of your business." I spoke coldly before telling the driver to close the door without hesitation. The door slammed against Steven's hand. The pain twisted his face, but he still refused to let go.Even after the driver pulled away and the car had gone a long distance, Steven kept chasing after us.His broken sobs came from behind us.Through the rearview mirror, I saw the proud and distant man I'd once known kneeling on the ground and crying. "Melody, please. Don't marry someone else. I really can't lose you."Even the driver looked slightly moved by the scene.I only glanced at him calmly before taking out Titan Capital Group's annual report and reading it carefully.Peter's help had never come without a price. He had more than a dozen illegitimate daughters like me, but only one of us could eventua

I was still alive. The moment the fire broke out, the version of me from ten years in the future had cried in despair. "Melody, are you really going to give up on yourself, too?"The tear rolling down her cheek brought me back to my senses.I didn't need to care about those people anymore. If I loved myself enough, I would always have the strongest love in the world.Once I realized that, I desperately called a number I hadn't dialed in 20 years. It belonged to the father who had tricked my mother into becoming his mistress even though he already had a family. He was Peter Quintero, one of the most powerful investors in Valdoria. His bodyguards arrived just in time. They quietly rescued me from the burning hospital room, saving my life. And now, I was standing before Steven once again.Steven burst into tears of joy.I calmly pulled my hand away and frowned slightly. "I don't know you."Steven's eyes turned red. He looked at me desperately. "Melody, I've already divorced Natalie. I al

After Steven grabbed Natalie by the throat, she weakly slapped his arm and stared at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Steven, don't you think that's ridiculous? You were the one who ordered everyone to hide the truth from Melody. You were the one who kicked her and caused her to miscarry. And you were the one who signed the surgical consent form yourself. How dare you blame me?"Her words shattered him. For a moment, he could barely stay on his feet.Aurelia's eyes suddenly widened. She picked up the surgical form from the floor and asked in a trembling voice, "Natalie, how could you do this to Melody? She grew up as an orphan. All she ever wanted was to have a family of her own. How could you be so cruel and take away her chance to ever become a mother?"Natalie laughed even harder. "You think I hurt her? Didn't you say she was nothing but a homewrecker? Weren't you the one who kept defending me and pushing Steven to send her to a psychiatric hospital? So why are you blaming me now?"Aureli

When Steven heard the news, he was at the mansion playing with the baby alongside Natalie.Aurelia stood nearby, happily watching them with a relieved smile.Steven frowned in annoyance. "How much did Melody pay you to go along with her little act? Tell her to stop causing trouble. Otherwise, she'll be stuck in that psychiatric hospital forever."With that, he hung up.Aurelia pressed her lips together, looking troubled. "I don't understand. Melody used to be so kind and sensible. But these past few years, she's become like this. One minute she's threatening to jump off a roof, and the next she's trying to burn herself alive..."She thought about how everyone had lied to Melody for ten years. Her voice trembled as she continued, "We only kept the fact that she was the homewrecker from her for ten years. How could that have turned her into this?"Steven froze. Then he suddenly roared in disbelief. "Why did you tell her about those ten years? Don't you know her mother killed herself by s

When I woke up in the hospital, Steven was holding my hand tightly.I instinctively pulled my hand away and quickly covered my stomach.Steven froze for a moment before slowly lowering his hand. "Melody, I know we lost the baby, but don't be sad. We'll have another one someday."My hand froze against my stomach.I forced a smile. "Steven, you're lying to me. Our baby already had tiny hands and feet. How could our baby just be gone? You're lying!"I broke down and grabbed whatever I could reach, throwing it at him. I wanted him to admit that he was lying.Steven let me kick and bite him. Then he slowly injected a sedative into my arm. "Melody, you're not in a good state right now. Get some sleep. You'll feel better when you wake up."When I woke up again, Natalie and Aurelia were already standing beside my bed.Aurelia saw the emptiness in my eyes and sighed. "Melody, do you think your baby is the only one who suffered?"Natalie got pregnant with Steven's baby on your birthday ten years
