Chapter 2

Author: Foxfall1
The next morning, I arrived at the bridal boutique alone.

When the sales associate took the wedding gown out of its garment bag, her eyes lit up. "Ms. Lawson, this dress really suits you. Is Mr. Sinclair coming today?"

I hesitated before answering, "He'll be here."

That was the last time I spoke with complete confidence on Hunter's behalf.

But at 10:00 am, he still hadn't arrived.

Then, at 10:30 am, his assistant sent me a message. "Ms. Lawson, Mr. Sinclair has something urgent to deal with. He probably won't be able to make it today."

I called Hunter. After several rings, he finally answered. But in the background, I could hear Tiffany's suppressed sobs.

"Natalie, I'm at the hospital," Hunter said.

I gripped my phone. "What happened to you?"

"It's not me," he replied. "It's Tiff. She had an allergic reaction to the necklace she wore last night. Her neck's swollen."

I lowered my head and looked at the wedding gown I was wearing. The corset was pulled so tight that it was hard to breathe.

"Today's our wedding dress fitting."

The other end of the line fell silent for a moment.

Hunter sighed softly and said, "Natalie, don't compare yourself to her. The person I'm marrying tomorrow is you. The person standing beside me at the altar will also be you. Tiff's sick. I'm staying with her for a while. Don't you have any confidence in our relationship?"

Instantly, I felt a lump form in my throat.

Just then, a sales associate walked over carrying a box. "Ms. Lawson, Mr. Sinclair just had someone deliver this."

Inside the box was a pair of ivory satin wedding shoes. The heels weren't high, and there were blister pads attached to the backs.

A card lay beside them. It read, "Your heels blister easily. Don't wear heels that are too high."

I held the card tightly, and a sharp ache welled up in my chest.

So he still remembered. When I was 18, my heels had been rubbed raw and bloody the first time I wore high heels.

His voice softened over the phone. "You got the shoes?"

"Yeah," I murmured.

It sounded like he was coaxing me as he said, "Be good. I'll come back and have dinner with you tonight."

Before I could respond, Tiffany called out from the other end. "Hunter, is my neck going to scar?"

Hunter immediately replied, "It won't. Let me take a look."

The call ended.

I lowered my head and looked at the shoes. They fit perfectly, but the person who had sent them wasn't there.

At three that afternoon, Gabriel arrived. I had already finished trying on all the dresses by then.

He pushed the door open, and when he saw me, his gaze paused for a moment. "You look beautiful," he complimented.

He walked closer and lowered his eyes to my feet. At the sight of them, he frowned immediately.

"You've rubbed them raw again?" he asked, crouching down to take a box of bandages out of his pocket. "Don't move."

Gabriel applied them gently and skillfully. It was just like old times. When he finished, he looked up at me and asked, "Does it hurt?"

I didn't answer.

Gabriel stood and steadied me with a hand. "Come on. Get in the car first. It's cold outside."

It was still raining. He tilted the umbrella toward me, and before long, half of his own shoulder was soaked.

I followed him to the car. Just as I was about to get in, I noticed a white stuffed lamb sitting in the front passenger seat.

I stopped.

Gabriel froze for a moment, but quickly pressed a hand against the car door. His tone was so natural that it was as if he were talking about something trivial. "You can sit in the back."

I looked at the stuffed lamb. "Can't it sit in the back?"

His movements stalled. "Don't make a fuss. Tiff's been waiting all afternoon for this."

"So I sit in the back, and it gets the front seat?"

Gabriel sighed. "Natalie, you're different. You're stronger than she is."

My eyes suddenly burned as tears welled up. I raised my hand to brush his hand away. "Gabriel, I don't want to be strong today."

The gentleness on his face faded. "Don't make this difficult for me."

I smiled. "Every single time, you tell me to be understanding. Why do you never ask that of her?"

Gabriel was silent for two seconds. Then, he said, "Because she really will cry."

I nodded. "But I won't."

I hugged the garment bag containing my wedding dress and turned to walk into the rain. The rain poured down. After only a few steps, the backs of my heels were already rubbing painfully against my shoes.

I didn't look back. Neither did Gabriel come after me.

It didn't really matter anymore.

20 minutes later, Tiffany posted on her social media. In the photo, the stuffed lamb sat spotless beside her hospital bed.

The caption read, "Someone brought it to me through the rain and said he wouldn't stop worrying until I stopped hurting."

I stood by the roadside, carrying my wedding accessories in my hand, while the pain in my heels had gone completely numb.

The sales associate ran after me and handed me a paper bag. "Ms. Lawson, you forgot your veil."

I took it.

At that moment, I suddenly didn't want to get married anymore.

As the bus doors closed, Hunter and Gabriel ran after it. Nevertheless, the bus still drove away.I sat by the window and never looked back. Outside the window, their figures grew smaller and smaller. The scene was like an old photograph washed out by the rain.I lowered my head and opened the box containing the earrings. The pearls were still there, but one of them now bore a faint scratch.I gently brushed it with my finger. My heart still ached, but it was no longer unbearable. People always had to carry a few scars as they moved forward. It would be fine as long as they didn't stay where they were, letting the same blade cut them over and over again.…By the time I arrived in Normuth, it was already dark.A coworker from my new company came to pick me up. She was a round-faced young woman named Ivy Zeller. The moment she saw me dragging my suitcase, she immediately ran over to help. "You're Ms. Lawson, right? Welcome! How was the trip? Tiring? I bought you a hot cup of

I boarded the earliest bus to Normuth. It was an old bus, and the seats were a little stiff. A slight breeze drifted in through the open window. Sitting by the window, I felt lighter than I ever had before. In my bag was a new job offer. I had secured a position as an administrative supervisor at a media company in Normuth. The salary wasn't really that high, but it was enough to support myself.More importantly, no one there knew Hunter. No one knew Gabriel either. No one would tell me to be generous whenever I was the one who had been hurt.By the time the bus left the city, the rain had stopped. Sunlight streamed through a small break in the clouds.Looking out the window, I suddenly remembered something Hunter had asked me a long time ago."Natalie, why are you so easily satisfied?"Back then, he had bought me a cup of hot milk. I had held it in my hands and sipped it the entire way home. I had been so happy that it seemed as though I had received the most wonderful gift in

Gabriel found the former property manager downstairs from my apartment.I had already moved out. The landlord told him I had left before dawn, taking only a single suitcase with me.Standing in the now-empty apartment, Gabriel noticed a lone white sock still hanging on the balcony. It was small and swaying gently in the wind.Suddenly, he remembered that many years ago, I had always followed behind them. Hunter walked fast, so I would jog to keep up. Gabriel couldn't bear to leave me behind, so he would stop and wait for me.Back then, I would smile and call out, "You're the best, Gabriel!"And then, Tiffany came into our lives. She cried. She was afraid of the dark. She trembled. She said she never felt safe. After she appeared, everyone started saying the same things to me."Natalie, let her have it.""Natalie, you're stronger.""Natalie, don't take it to heart."Gabriel had said those things too. He said them so many times that even he came to believe them. He believed I t

Chaos erupted backstage at the hotel. Hunter had people search every corner of the dressing room. Tiffany kept crying until her voice turned hoarse. "Hunter, I really didn't take them. Why does Natalie keep suspecting me?"In the past, Hunter would always go soft on her whenever she cried like this. But today, he simply stood in front of the makeup mirror and stared at her coldly. He demanded, "I'm asking you one last time. Where are the earrings?"Tiffany was so stunned that her tears stopped.Gabriel frowned. "Don't scare her, Hunter. She's timid."Hunter scoffed in response. "She's timid?"He grabbed the wedding schedule booklet from the table and hurled it hard into Gabriel's chest.Hunter fumed, "You say she's timid? She turned herself into the star at Natalie's wedding. Then, she made arrangements to wear Natalie's mother's keepsake to film a video. Don't forget she made Natalie apologize to her backstage. How is she timid?"The impact forced Gabriel to take half a step

I turned my phone back on while I was on the way to the cemetery. The moment the screen lit up, message after message flooded in. I received messages from Hunter, Gabriel, and even Lena. I didn't open any of them. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Getting married today, young lady?"I lowered my eyes to the veil in my hands. The sales associate at the bridal boutique had run after me yesterday to give it back.I had wanted to throw it away. But in the end, I still brought it with me. It was because I had chosen that veil myself.Once upon a time, I had really yearned to marry Hunter. I had wanted it so badly that I secretly rewrote my wedding vows over and over behind his back. I had wanted to say "I do" a little more softly because I was afraid I couldn't stop myself from crying when saying it.By the time the car stopped at the entrance to the cemetery, it had started raining again. I didn't have an umbrella. I hadn't had one on that night when I was 18,

The moment the manager finished speaking, the ring box slipped from Hunter's hand and hit the floor with a sharp snap. The pear-shaped diamond rolled out and bumped against the toe of his dress shoe. The smile on Gabriel's face froze as well. "What did you just say?"The manager was startled by his reaction and hurriedly handed over a tablet. "At 4:00 am, Ms. Lawson personally called to cancel every part of the wedding. The hotel banquet, the decorations, the photography and videography, the band, the floral arrangements—everything was canceled."She also said that if Mr. Sinclair didn't agree, we could send the cancellation fee directly to her."Hunter stared at the screen. Under the confirmation field, my name, "Natalie Lawson", was written clearly. The time read 4:17 am.It was as if he had finally processed what he was seeing. He immediately took out his phone and called me.The mechanical voice repeated itself over and over. "The number you have dialed is unavailable."Hunt
