Chapter 3

Author: Foxfall1
The next day, I still went to the city hall. I wanted to see whether Hunter would actually come.

At 9:15 am, I saw Hunter's car pull up across the street. When the car door opened, the tightness in my chest eased. I even instinctively fixed my hair.

All he needed to do was say, "Natalie, I'm here."

With that, I might have swallowed all of last night's hurt one more time.

But then, his phone rang, and he answered it. I didn't know what Tiffany said on the other end, but his expression changed immediately.

The next second, Hunter turned and got back into the car. The sound of the car door closing was soft, yet it was as loud as the sound of my heart breaking.

Ten minutes later, Tiffany posted on her social media. "I told him I didn't want to be alone, and he really came back."

In the photo, Hunter was holding the hand that was hooked to an IV.

At 9:40 am, Gabriel arrived at the city hall. When he got out of the car, his face showed the exhaustion of someone who hadn't slept well.

"Stop waiting. Hunter can't make it today," he said.

I looked at him and said, "I saw him."

Gabriel froze for a moment. He opened his mouth, but in the end, he merely said, "Tiff's allergic reaction flared up again last night. She can't handle any emotional stress."

I asked, "So I can?"

Gabriel frowned. "Natalie, don't keep asking questions like that."

He walked closer, speaking as though he were trying to comfort me. "You'll have a wedding, and you'll have a rightful status. You'll be Mrs. Sinclair. But what does Tiff have? She only has a few friends like us."

I put away my documents and turned to leave.

Gabriel grabbed my arm and asked, "Where are you going?"

"The wedding planning company," I replied.

He visibly relaxed upon hearing that. "To confirm the schedule?"

I nodded.

His expression eased. "That's more like it. Don't throw everything into chaos. The one who'll end up looking bad is you."

At the wedding planning company, the planner looked a little uncomfortable. She pushed the materials for the welcome display toward me.

On the screen was a photo of Hunter standing in the middle, with Tiffany and me on either side. It had been taken at Tiffany's birthday party last year. She wore a white dress and held onto Hunter's arm, looking more like the bride than anyone else.

I stood off to the side, still holding the cake knife I'd used to cut her birthday cake.

Even the welcome message had been changed to "Thank you for witnessing our ten years together."

But why did "our ten years" include not only Hunter and me, but also Tiffany as well?

I kept scrolling through the schedule and found that everything had been changed. The wedding vows even included a section thanking Tiffany.

I asked the planner, "Who approved this?"

The planner answered cautiously, "Mr. Sinclair."

Seeing the look on my face, Gabriel immediately said, "It's only the welcome display, not the main stage. Tiff never really had a family growing up. She just wants to feel involved."

I looked at him incredulously. "It's my wedding. What does she need to be involved in?"

Gabriel's voice deepened as he warned, "Don't be so harsh, Natalie."

Just then, Hunter called. The moment I answered, he asked, "Have you seen the schedule?"

"I have."

"Tiff cried all night, saying she felt like an outsider. I had them add a few more photos."

I asked, "Do you really think that's appropriate?"

Hunter's tone grew impatient. "What's inappropriate about it? She's the maid of honor, and she's a mutual friend of ours. Tomorrow, you're marrying me, not a screen."

I continued scrolling. When I reached the jewelry confirmation page, my finger stopped.

The note read, "Ms. West will model the pearl earrings for the pre-wedding promotional video."

Those pearl earrings had been my mother's. Before she died, she told me she hoped I would wear them on my wedding day.

"Why did you let Tiffany wear my mother's earrings?" I asked.

Hunter fell silent for a moment before explaining, "She was only trying them on—"

"Mom left those to me."

"I know," he replied.

I laughed in disbelief. "You knew, and you still let her wear them?"

On the other end of the line, Tiffany began crying softly. "Hunter, forget it. I won't wear them. Natalie must think I'm not worthy…"

Hunter's voice immediately softened. "Don't say that."

But when he spoke to me again, his tone turned cold once more. "Natalie, Tiff is only trying them on to help you film the preview video. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of this?"

I said, "Give them back."

Hunter didn't respond.

Then, Gabriel suddenly spoke from beside me. "Natalie, if your mom were still here, she wouldn't hold something like this against a young woman."

I shot him a piercing look.

The conference room fell silent.

My gaze seemed to intimidate Gabriel for a moment, but he continued anyway. "Did I say anything wrong? Your mom would've definitely wanted you to be more generous. You're making such a scene over a pair of earrings. She wouldn't be happy if she saw this."

I slapped him across the face.

Hunter's cold voice came through the phone. "Natalie, did you hit him?"

Gabriel's face turned to the side, and his eyes were filled with disbelief. "Natalie, you've become someone I don't even recognize anymore!"

I ignored him, picked up my bag, and walked out.

From my phone speaker, I heard Hunter say, "If you walk out now, don't expect to see me home tonight."

I stopped in my tracks and said, "Whatever."

As the bus doors closed, Hunter and Gabriel ran after it. Nevertheless, the bus still drove away.I sat by the window and never looked back. Outside the window, their figures grew smaller and smaller. The scene was like an old photograph washed out by the rain.I lowered my head and opened the box containing the earrings. The pearls were still there, but one of them now bore a faint scratch.I gently brushed it with my finger. My heart still ached, but it was no longer unbearable. People always had to carry a few scars as they moved forward. It would be fine as long as they didn't stay where they were, letting the same blade cut them over and over again.…By the time I arrived in Normuth, it was already dark.A coworker from my new company came to pick me up. She was a round-faced young woman named Ivy Zeller. The moment she saw me dragging my suitcase, she immediately ran over to help. "You're Ms. Lawson, right? Welcome! How was the trip? Tiring? I bought you a hot cup of

I boarded the earliest bus to Normuth. It was an old bus, and the seats were a little stiff. A slight breeze drifted in through the open window. Sitting by the window, I felt lighter than I ever had before. In my bag was a new job offer. I had secured a position as an administrative supervisor at a media company in Normuth. The salary wasn't really that high, but it was enough to support myself.More importantly, no one there knew Hunter. No one knew Gabriel either. No one would tell me to be generous whenever I was the one who had been hurt.By the time the bus left the city, the rain had stopped. Sunlight streamed through a small break in the clouds.Looking out the window, I suddenly remembered something Hunter had asked me a long time ago."Natalie, why are you so easily satisfied?"Back then, he had bought me a cup of hot milk. I had held it in my hands and sipped it the entire way home. I had been so happy that it seemed as though I had received the most wonderful gift in

Gabriel found the former property manager downstairs from my apartment.I had already moved out. The landlord told him I had left before dawn, taking only a single suitcase with me.Standing in the now-empty apartment, Gabriel noticed a lone white sock still hanging on the balcony. It was small and swaying gently in the wind.Suddenly, he remembered that many years ago, I had always followed behind them. Hunter walked fast, so I would jog to keep up. Gabriel couldn't bear to leave me behind, so he would stop and wait for me.Back then, I would smile and call out, "You're the best, Gabriel!"And then, Tiffany came into our lives. She cried. She was afraid of the dark. She trembled. She said she never felt safe. After she appeared, everyone started saying the same things to me."Natalie, let her have it.""Natalie, you're stronger.""Natalie, don't take it to heart."Gabriel had said those things too. He said them so many times that even he came to believe them. He believed I t

Chaos erupted backstage at the hotel. Hunter had people search every corner of the dressing room. Tiffany kept crying until her voice turned hoarse. "Hunter, I really didn't take them. Why does Natalie keep suspecting me?"In the past, Hunter would always go soft on her whenever she cried like this. But today, he simply stood in front of the makeup mirror and stared at her coldly. He demanded, "I'm asking you one last time. Where are the earrings?"Tiffany was so stunned that her tears stopped.Gabriel frowned. "Don't scare her, Hunter. She's timid."Hunter scoffed in response. "She's timid?"He grabbed the wedding schedule booklet from the table and hurled it hard into Gabriel's chest.Hunter fumed, "You say she's timid? She turned herself into the star at Natalie's wedding. Then, she made arrangements to wear Natalie's mother's keepsake to film a video. Don't forget she made Natalie apologize to her backstage. How is she timid?"The impact forced Gabriel to take half a step

I turned my phone back on while I was on the way to the cemetery. The moment the screen lit up, message after message flooded in. I received messages from Hunter, Gabriel, and even Lena. I didn't open any of them. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Getting married today, young lady?"I lowered my eyes to the veil in my hands. The sales associate at the bridal boutique had run after me yesterday to give it back.I had wanted to throw it away. But in the end, I still brought it with me. It was because I had chosen that veil myself.Once upon a time, I had really yearned to marry Hunter. I had wanted it so badly that I secretly rewrote my wedding vows over and over behind his back. I had wanted to say "I do" a little more softly because I was afraid I couldn't stop myself from crying when saying it.By the time the car stopped at the entrance to the cemetery, it had started raining again. I didn't have an umbrella. I hadn't had one on that night when I was 18,

The moment the manager finished speaking, the ring box slipped from Hunter's hand and hit the floor with a sharp snap. The pear-shaped diamond rolled out and bumped against the toe of his dress shoe. The smile on Gabriel's face froze as well. "What did you just say?"The manager was startled by his reaction and hurriedly handed over a tablet. "At 4:00 am, Ms. Lawson personally called to cancel every part of the wedding. The hotel banquet, the decorations, the photography and videography, the band, the floral arrangements—everything was canceled."She also said that if Mr. Sinclair didn't agree, we could send the cancellation fee directly to her."Hunter stared at the screen. Under the confirmation field, my name, "Natalie Lawson", was written clearly. The time read 4:17 am.It was as if he had finally processed what he was seeing. He immediately took out his phone and called me.The mechanical voice repeated itself over and over. "The number you have dialed is unavailable."Hunt
