Chapter 5

Author: Mariana
The moment the plane took off, I let out a long breath, as if finally shedding a long-standing burden that had weighed on my heart for years.

Then, I closed my eyes, switched my newly SIM-free phone to airplane mode, and prepared for a long-overdue rest.

I had waited far too long for this sleep.

Soft music played on a loop through my headphones. Melodies I loved soothed my nerves, gradually pulling me into tranquility and almost making me forget all the pain that came before.

Amidst my sleep, I heard a voice. "You're finally free, Amelia Walker."

For the past five years, it felt like I was imprisoned in a cage named Aldric Cromwell—willingly reducing myself to nothing, loving him so deeply that I completely lost who I was.

Yet, despite professing to him 143 times, my sincerity wasn't even worth the barest hint of kindness in his eyes.

I never thought of giving up, as I foolishly believed I would eventually move him and walk with him into marriage, so long as I loved him enough.

After our marriage, life with William was sweet and fulfilling.A year later, we welcomed our first child—a son. Two years after that, I gave birth to a daughter. With both a boy and a girl, and a devoted husband by my side, we built a home filled with joy and harmony. When the fifth year arrived, William's parents, now aging, hoped he would return to take over the family business. Hence, he decided to move us all back to Amerethia."Amy, I heard Aldric Cromwell still isn't married. I'm worried that bringing you back now might burden you with some painful memories," he said gently, his eyes full of concern."I'll be fine. I didn't do anything wrong in that relationship, and I don't have to answer to anyone." I held his hand and assured, "You're your parents' only son—they and the family business need you to support them.""Thank you, Amy." He pulled me into his arms, placing a soft kiss on my forehead. "Don't worry. I'll protect you and won't let anyone hurt you again."After ret

"Aldric can do whatever he wants for all I care. He's got nothing to do with me anymore," I said calmly, and not a single word was laced with emotion."Right. Leaving him was the best decision you've ever made. There'd be nothing but endless misery for you had you stayed with him," Freya agreed. "Anyway, how long do you plan to stay here?""For as long as I want. I quite like it here. I'm thinking of long-term residency."I pulled out a half-completed Eastmeric workbook from my backpack and smiled at her.Freya was startled, then broke into a smile. "That's great! Mom and Dad have been enjoying their time here, except when they had to worry about you."I'm sure they'll be elated to hear you're staying for good. Our family is finally one again!"Over the next few days, I remained wrapped in the warmth of reunion. With my parents' quiet companionship and the comfort of Freya and her husband, Sebastian Carter, I almost forgot all the messy things I left behind. But peace, as alway

Bianca's voice rang pitifully. Her tear-brimmed face could stir sympathy in almost any man. However, not in Aldric today. Instead, his words only became harsher. "Get out of my sight! You're being a nuisance!"With that, he shoved her aside and strode off. Thanks to the development of social media nowadays, the ongoing drama unfolding before the Cromwell Tower was, of course, captured by curious onlookers.Once the footage hit the platforms, public opinion exploded."Isn't that Bianca? Did Mr. Cromwell not break up with her? Did he decorate his car and wait for Amelia while he was still in a relationship?""I know what Bianca's trying to do. She's trying to seize the opportunity while he's at his lowest. Anyway, compared to Amelia, Bianca looked like a poor imitation. Same wedding dress, same setup, but nowhere near as stunning.""Maybe that's why Mr. Cromwell is pissed. She was so loud on social media about having him as her man. It turns out she was just a homewrecking bitch."

The events of my resignation and Aldric getting stood up happened back-to-back. Naturally, endless rumors were sparked. The employees at Cromwell LLP started to piece things together, suddenly remembering details they had overlooked before."Now that I think about it, I remember Amelia would always archive every interview Mr. Cromwell had done.""Whenever Mr. Cromwell attended important meetings, Amelia was always called in to run errands. Even so, she was consistently the first to arrive, meticulously ensuring every detail was perfectly arranged.""Mr. Cromwell often lost track of time when busy, and Amelia would use the excuse of unfinished work to stay late and help out."Once, I forgot something and came back after 10:00 pm, and besides the security staff, only the two of them were left in the building.""Then, what's with Bianca? Mr. Cromwell had been known for his many girlfriends, but Amelia was a veteran employee."If they really had that kind of relationship all along,

When I arrived at the company the next day, I headed to my workstation as always, but my colleague, Daisy Miller, stopped me."You're in trouble, Amelia."I looked at her, confused. What kind of trouble would I have other than to pack up my stuff as a resigned employee? As though troubled by something, Daisy carefully pointed to the front. There, I finally noticed that the seat that used to be mine was now occupied by Bianca. She sat leisurely while she touched up her makeup in a fitted, high-end orange-pink pantsuit. Thanks to Daisy's explanation, I finally understood what had happened. With Aldric's help, Bianca had officially joined Cromwell LLP. Knowing her relationship with the CEO, the department head had fawned over her, letting her pick any seat she liked.Mine was the one she chose at first glance.Understanding the true intent behind Bianca's move, I silently walked over to her. Seeing me approach, she raised her perfectly trimmed brows and curled her bold red lips in
