Chapter 3

مؤلف: Amber Fleck
Mason rushed inside. The moment he saw what was happening, he almost fainted from shock.

The man realized something was wrong. He quickly pulled on his pants and climbed out the window.

Claire came in right behind Mason.

She covered her eyes and screamed. "Carol, is this why you moved out? So you could sleep with men?"

Wendy quickly supported Mason and blamed me. "Carol, this is too much."

I immediately realized that this was another trap planned by Wendy and Claire.

I fought through the terrible pain between my legs and reached for my phone. "I'm calling the police! I don't even know that man! You two set me up..."

But Mason's eyes turned bloodshot.

He snatched my phone away and gritted his teeth. "Carol, haven't you embarrassed yourself enough?"

He wanted to say more. But suddenly, he froze. Then he collapsed right in front of me.

"Dad!"

Claire and Wendy exchanged a quick glance.

They soon called an ambulance, but they refused to let me ride with them.

I was about to call a cab to the hospital myself when someone suddenly pressed a handkerchief over my mouth and nose.

That was how my three-year nightmare began.

A short notification sound pulled me back to the present.

Alexander had sent Mason a picture.

It showed a bloodstained shoe lying on its side inside a pigpen.

Mason recognized it immediately.

It was my shoe.

He suddenly stood up and almost knocked over Claire's strawberry cake. "This has to be one of Carol's tricks."

Mason was extremely agitated. His hands were shaking so badly that he almost dropped his phone while typing.

"Captain Lockwood, I request permission to go to the scene myself. Carol has pretended to be a victim many times since she was a child. I know her."

The car sent to pick up Mason arrived downstairs soon after.

My spirit followed him into the car.

After leaving the city, the car entered the highway and continued straight.

About an hour and a half later, we passed through a toll booth. Then we turned left and exited onto a county road.

Once we entered the mountains, the car turned right. The slope grew steeper and steeper.

Soon, we reached a series of sharp left turns winding up the mountain.

I silently watched the road outside the window. It was exactly the same route I had sensed when I was blindfolded.

Mason had handled many kidnapping cases during his career.

Because of that, I had known since I was a child that a kidnapping victim must not panic. You had to stay calm and remember the route as much as possible.

At that moment, Mason pulled his wallet from his pocket.

I floated closer to look. Inside was a picture of Wendy and Claire together.

He pulled the picture out. Underneath it was another photo.

In the picture, I was still a little girl sitting in the judge's chair, holding a toy gavel and smiling at Mason.

He unconsciously rubbed his finger across my face in the picture.

Then he opened my message thread. "Carol, stop resisting. If you turn yourself in, I can ask the judge for a lighter sentence."

I scrolled up through our old messages. Only then did I realize that he had sent me so many messages over the past three years.

At first, he had written. "If you don't come home soon, don't ever call me your father again!"

Then. "I signed you up for the SAT this year."

Later. "Fine, don't come home. But are you not even going to visit your mother's grave anymore?"

His final message was. "Carol, I don't want the next time I see you to be in my courtroom."

I silently floated in front of Mason.

Dad, you'll never see me again.

The pigs in that pen had already eaten me.

"Judge Leighton, we're here."

Mason looked up. But he seemed slow to understand what Alexander had said.

When he got out of the car, his legs were trembling slightly.

He stubbornly kept calling my phone. "Carol, please pick up. If you come out now, we can still count it as you turning yourself in. If we find you ourselves, it will be too late."

Alexander held up a sealed evidence bag.

His expression was complicated. "Judge Leighton, this is a tissue sample we collected from the scene. If Lillian's statement is true, then this is most likely..."

Mason stared straight ahead. For a moment, I almost thought he could see my soul. Then he started crying. "Carol was always obedient and sensible. She sat in on so many court cases. She had a stronger sense of justice than anyone I knew."I never wanted her to see too much of the ugliness in people when she was young. But I never had enough time to be with her. The whole reason I thought about getting married was so she could stay away from courtrooms and have more good things in her life. "I only wanted to find Carol a mother who could take care of her and someone her own age to keep her company. I never thought it would end up getting her killed."After you two came into our lives, Carol suddenly started stealing toys, cheating on tests, and even stealing gold jewelry. "I thought she was angry because she felt like I favored you. I thought she was acting out on purpose just to get my attention. I never imagined you were framing her!"I was there the day she was assaulted. I watched

Wendy and Claire were becoming more anxious and panicked by the day.Every little sound made them think the police were coming. The pressure was becoming unbearable.Claire was the first to break. "Mom, why don't you turn yourself in? I can't take this anymore!"Wendy glared at her angrily. "If I turn myself in and go to prison, what will happen to you? What if Mason remembers everything? You'll be finished too!"Claire's eyes widened with anger. Her fingernails nearly dug into Wendy's flesh. "Then why did you have to hire someone to sell Carol? You had other options! You could have driven her to suicide. If she had killed herself, we wouldn't be dealing with all this trouble now! I'm about to graduate from law school! I'm almost there! Why did Carol have to die now of all times? This is all your fault!"Wendy slapped Claire so hard that she fell to the floor. Her hands were trembling, and her eyes were bloodshot. "I did all of this for you! Who told you to lose to Carol at everything

Claire and Wendy both froze.Even I stared at Mason in shock. After examining him, his doctor let out a sigh. The trauma had caused Mason to completely forget that I ever existed. He had forgotten the three years I spent in darkness. He had forgotten that I saved 23 girls and died a horrible death at the hands of the kidnappers."The patient already has an underlying heart and blood vessel condition," the doctor explained. "Since he has forgotten, his family should avoid deliberately mentioning her in front of him. We need to reduce anything that might trigger another episode."After hearing the doctor's instructions, Claire and Wendy exchanged complicated looks.I felt just as conflicted when I floated in front of Mason.I never imagined that after my death, I'd became the word my father couldn't bear to hear. The people at the courthouse soon learned about Mason's condition. They arranged for him to take early retirement."Let Mason stay home and focus on recovering."But the moment

Mason screamed in rage. He looked like he wanted to lunge across the room and kill Lillian. The two officers quickly stepped in to calm him down and gently persuaded him to sit.Mason collapsed into the chair and began sobbing like a child. It was the first time I had ever seen Mason cry.For years, whenever something went wrong, he had never allowed me to cry. He always told me to find a solution first. And now, after learning that I was dead, Mason was the one crying. "Carol was so brave. She used everything I taught her to save 23 people. How could I have thought she was working with the kidnappers? How could I have ever suspected my own daughter?"Mason could no longer control his emotions. He kept banging his head against the wall.Lillian crossed her arms and watched the desperate Mason with a smug smile. "Judge Leighton, you've spent all these years judging other people. Do you really need to ask me about something this simple?"Lillian suddenly leaned closer and stared straight

After studying the routes out of town, I stayed up several nights drawing a simple map on scrap paper. Then I quietly waited for the right opportunity. The party in the neighboring town last month was our best chance. Most of the townsfolk had been invited, and it took two hours to travel from Blackwood Township to the neighboring town and back. With my map, that would be more than enough time for the girls to escape. As long as they reached the highway and managed to flag down a car, they would be free. But the townsfolk were extremely cautious. To stop the kidnapped women from escaping during the party, they left several men behind to guard the town. The night before the party, I took my map and found Michelle. "This is a map of the route out of town. Find a way to tell the other girls. Tomorrow, I'll find a way to lure the guards away. You must escape!"Michelle stared at me in shock. She didn't say a word for a long time.I knew she still didn't trust me.She was probably also worr

"It's from a pig, right?" Mason shouted. Then he grabbed Michelle. "Captain Lockwood, we have a victim claiming Carol broke her leg. Lillian is lying to us. Carol must be one of the kidnappers!"Alexander said nothing. He simply handed the report to Mason. The report said that there was a greater than 99.99% probability that the biological evidence had come from me.It also confirmed that the remains belonged to me.Michelle covered her mouth and burst into tears when she read those words. "How could Carol not have escaped?"Mason took a step back in disbelief. Then he collapsed onto the floor. "How could it be Carol? There must be a mistake in the test! Carol must have mixed her fingernails and hair with the pig bones. That's why you got this result!"She went too far! She's been sitting in on my cases since she was a child, so she knows all this forensic stuff. But instead of using what she learned properly, she used it to trick us. Once I catch her, I'll..."Mason was about to call
