Chapter 4

作者: Vesper
The day before the thirty days were up, Tyrus sent me a message.

[Come by my family's house tomorrow night.]

[My mom wants you to bring your ID and your birth certificate. You'll get the deed, too.]

[We'll talk about the wedding while you're at it.]

I stared at that last message and did not reply right away.

My parents left the house to me.

I could skip seeing him. But I had to get what belonged to me.

The next day, I went to Tyrus' family home with a document folder.

When I arrived, the living room was already filled with people.

Tyrus' mother, Margie Aberg, sat at the center.

Claire sat beside her, wearing the dress I had picked out, with the Aberg family's heirloom bracelet on her wrist.

On the table sat the Thanksgiving gift basket I'd prepared.

Margie opened the gift basket and praised Claire with a smile, "Claire, you're always so thoughtful. You know exactly what I like."

I looked at Tyrus.

"You said we'd be talking about a wedding. Not ours, apparently?"

Margie patted Claire's wrist.

"Some people just aren't the right fit. It doesn't matter how long they've been together.

Claire glanced down at the bracelet and deliberately held her wrist out in front of Tyrus.

"Tyrus, is this too flashy for me to wear?"

"Not at all."

He took her hand and pushed the bracelet further up her wrist for her.

As I looked at them, I asked, "So where's the original deed?"

Tyrus' expression darkened.

"You came all the way here just to ask me that?"

"Didn't you tell me to come get my things?"

He stared at me, his tone growing heavier with every word.

"I brought you here so you could see it for yourself.

"Claire's standing right here. Why aren't you saying anything?

"Aren't you supposed to be crying and asking me why I brought her to meet my parents?"

I put the documents on the table back into my bag.

"I've seen enough."

My calmness made Tyrus' expression turn even grimmer.

He pulled a ring out of his pocket. It was the one I had asked him about in our fourth year together.

Back then, I asked him when he would consider marriage.

He simply said, "We're still young. There's no rush.

"Once you stop throwing tantrums over every little thing, then we can talk about it."

But this time, Claire had only needed thirty days.

She did not even need to wait for him to be ready.

He took her hand and slid the ring onto her ring finger.

"So what if she was with me for five years?

"Not everyone who sticks around deserves to be treasured.

"As of today, you're not just my girlfriend. You're the woman I'm going to marry."

I looked away from the ring.

"You two go ahead. I'm leaving."

Tyrus' hand froze in midair.

He looked like he did not expect me to walk away without even asking him to stay.

I went back home. I had already moved most of my things out.

This time, I only went back to get my laptop from the desk, along with the will and property documents my parents had left behind.

Tyrus' travel booking account was still logged in on the computer.

I meant to log out.

I saw Claire's name in the hotel order history on the site.

Every guest name was Tyrus and Claire, and every room type was a king bed.

I closed the laptop.

I did not confront him or send a message.

Starting today, whatever was going on between him and Claire had nothing to do with me anymore.

I called a renovation company. "I want a full renovation."

This house was what my parents had left me. It was also the place Tyrus and I had turned into a home.

I was going to restore it to a version without him.

That evening, when Tyrus came back, the house had already been cleared out.

He stood in the empty living room.

For the first time, he did not find me waiting for him to come around.

He called out instinctively, "Lay-lay?"

No one responded to him.

He finally realized that I had not just let Claire take my place as his girlfriend. I had also left his life for good.

  • The 30-Day Proxy   Chapter 10

A year later, I held a small gathering at my new home. There was no anniversary to celebrate, and no seats that had to come in pairs. It was just to celebrate my first full year of living here.Patricia gave me a new photo album. The first page held a photo taken on moving day.In the photo, the living room still had no furniture.I was sitting on a suitcase, holding the potted plant I had brought from my old home. The second page was a group photo after my promotion. The third page was my first solo trip. After that came friends, work, family, and plenty of everyday moments that no longer revolved around Tyrus. The last page was still blank.Patricia asked me with a smile, "Who's this one for?"I pondered, then said, "For whatever comes next."Perhaps I would meet someone new in the future, or I would keep filling the pages on my own.But whoever it was going to be, they would not have to replace anyone to earn a spot in my life. After the gathering, I received Tyrus' l

After leaving Tyrus, I realized I still carried a lot of old habits with me.When I disagreed with a colleague, I would instinctively apologize first. When a friend changed plans at the last minute, I would feel uncomfortable but still habitually say it was fine.Even when I was ordering at a restaurant and the server asked what I wanted, my first reaction was still to say, "Anything's fine."Tyrus had spent three years making me believe that every conflict was my fault. As long as I did not cave in first, he would change his profile picture, take Claire's hand, and take away even more of what belonged to me.So I grew more afraid to speak up, more afraid to say "no."On my first weekend after moving into my new place, a colleague, Patricia Lance, invited me out to dinner. She asked me, "Pizza or barbecue?"I said instinctively, "Either one's fine."She just laughed and pushed the menu back to me."Tonight's about celebrating your promotion."So, we're getting what you want

After the engagement was called off, Tyrus posted a statement in the mutual friends' group chat.He admitted the proxy girlfriend arrangement was never a game I had agreed to.The anniversary dinner, the hotel, and the wedding speech, he admitted, had all been prepared by me in advance. He had handed those things to Claire without my permission. At the end, he wrote, [Layla never came between me and Claire.][I was the one who went public with another woman and proposed to her without ever formally ending a five-year relationship.][It's entirely my fault.]The friends who had once egged him on at the wedding began apologizing to me.Some said, [We thought you two were just playing around.]Another explained, [Tyrus kept saying you'd definitely come back, so we didn't take it seriously.]Willow also sent me that speech draft again.[I'm sorry. Those memories were ours, but I let Claire deliver the speech in your place.]I did not rejoin that group.I only asked Tyrus to re

On the third day, Claire came to see me personally. She placed the anniversary necklace on the table. The pendant had been polished very thin. The name that had once belonged to me was completely gone. All that remained was this.[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]Claire stared at the necklace for a long time before letting go."Tyrus told me to give it back. He said it's yours."I put the necklace into a box.I did not thank her.Taking back what was mine did not require a thank-you in the first place.Claire sat across from me and did not leave for a long time."Lay-lay, if you just tell Tyrus you're never coming back, he'll go through with our engagement."He won't set a date right now."And he won't let me move in."I found it absurd."I already gave you the permanent girlfriend spot a month ago."If Tyrus won't go through with it, that's between the two of you."Tears welled up in her eyes. "But you're still the one he loves."I shook my head."What he loves is me get

After moving into my new place, I changed all my account passwords, canceled the shared memberships I had with Tyrus, and closed out our shared accounts.I even revoked access to our shared photo album from the past five years. The system prompted me, [Are you sure you want to leave this shared space?][If you leave, all data uploaded over the past five years will be permanently deleted. This can't be undone.]I chose confirm. The moment the page went blank, I did not feel as sad as I had imagined. The relationship was already over a long time ago. It ended the moment Tyrus started making Claire his proxy girlfriend, over and over again. The next day after work, Tyrus was waiting outside my office building. He had not slept all night. In his hand was the house key I had left behind."Why didn't you tell me your new address?"I walked around him.He stepped in front of me again."I already sent Claire home."She's not staying in our place."I looked at him and said, "That

Tyrus stood in the empty living room, calling my name multiple times. No one answered. He rushed into the bedroom. My half of the closet was completely empty. My documents, skincare products, and everyday medicine on the nightstand were all gone, too.Even the potted plant I had kept on the balcony for five years was missing. The only things left were the gifts he had given me: the matching watches, the anniversary decorations, and the fridge magnets from our trips together.I left behind everything that proved we had spent five years together.Tyrus picked up the booking confirmation from the moving company. The date on it was from twenty days ago.In other words, I had already started planning my exit before he even announced Claire was taking over.He assumed I had gone quiet because I was sulking, waiting for him to cave first. But I had not been waiting. I had been apartment hunting, sorting through my things, and quietly exiting his life bit by bit.Tyrus kept call
