Chapter 3

Author: Vesper
After the wedding ended, Claire came to me on her own.

She dropped the act of just playing along with Tyrus.

She said that three years ago, when the whole proxy girlfriend thing first started, it was she who reminded him to change to matching profile pictures.

It was also her idea to extend the proxy arrangement.

She deliberately took over my dates with him, posted suggestive photos of the two of them on social media, and helped herself to my things.

"I just wanted to know whether he'd really choose me if I kept taking your place."

She pulled up a chat record from a few months ago.

[After the thirty days are up, do I still have to give the girlfriend spot back to Lay-lay?]

Tyrus replied, [No need.]

[If she doesn't come back, you stay.]

I forwarded the screenshot to Tyrus.

[You knew she was trying to take my place?]

He promptly called me.

"I knew."

"Then why did you let it keep going?"

"Isn't this better? I'm just making sure you understand that not everything goes your way," he said in a firm tone.

On the other end of the line, I could hear the sound of Claire coughing.

Tyrus quickly hung up, poured her water, then dug out pills and told her to get some rest.

When my stomach hurt so badly I was curled up on the couch, all he told me was to tough it out.

With Claire, even a single small cough was enough for him to spring into action and remember every little thing about her.

He still thought he was using Claire to make me jealous.

But somewhere along the way, he had grown used to taking care of someone else.

After we hung up, I went to the house I had lived in for five years.

It was an old home my parents had left me.

When I was seventeen, I was cornered in an alley.

Tyrus took my hand and ran with me through this door.

That day, it was pouring rain outside.

He draped his jacket over my shoulders and sat with me in the empty living room until dawn.

Later, we painted the walls together, changed the lights, and bought furniture.

We bought the wind chime on the balcony.

The first photo on the wall was a picture of us that we had printed after our first trip together.

Our door lock code was the date of our first kiss.

I used to think that as long as we had this house, we would always be together.

I was wrong.

Today, when I put the key into the lock, it would not turn.

The door opened, and Claire stood inside wearing Tyrus' shirt.

She wore my house slippers and was drinking from my most-used mug.

Every photo of us on the photo wall had been taken down.

The wind chime Tyrus and I bought together was gone, and the curtains had been replaced with light-colored ones Claire liked.

Only her favorite low-sugar yogurt was left in the fridge.

The toiletries in the bathroom had been cleared out and replaced with a matching pair.

My things had been packed into cardboard boxes.

A piece of white paper was taped to the cardboard box.

[Layla's stuff. Get rid of it ASAP.]

I was so angry that my fingers trembled.

"Who said you could touch my things?"

Claire did not back down.

"Tyrus did."

She pointed toward the bedroom.

"He said I'm his girlfriend now, so we're doing things my way."

I had no strength left to argue.

I simply lowered my head and packed my ID, clothes, and everyday things into the suitcase.

Tyrus was still standing in the same spot.

"Lay-lay, just apologize, and I'll change the code back."

I turned and took one last look at this house that had once belonged to us.

His expression darkened.

"You're going to regret this."

"No, I won't."

A year later, I held a small gathering at my new home. There was no anniversary to celebrate, and no seats that had to come in pairs. It was just to celebrate my first full year of living here.Patricia gave me a new photo album. The first page held a photo taken on moving day.In the photo, the living room still had no furniture.I was sitting on a suitcase, holding the potted plant I had brought from my old home. The second page was a group photo after my promotion. The third page was my first solo trip. After that came friends, work, family, and plenty of everyday moments that no longer revolved around Tyrus. The last page was still blank.Patricia asked me with a smile, "Who's this one for?"I pondered, then said, "For whatever comes next."Perhaps I would meet someone new in the future, or I would keep filling the pages on my own.But whoever it was going to be, they would not have to replace anyone to earn a spot in my life. After the gathering, I received Tyrus' l

After leaving Tyrus, I realized I still carried a lot of old habits with me.When I disagreed with a colleague, I would instinctively apologize first. When a friend changed plans at the last minute, I would feel uncomfortable but still habitually say it was fine.Even when I was ordering at a restaurant and the server asked what I wanted, my first reaction was still to say, "Anything's fine."Tyrus had spent three years making me believe that every conflict was my fault. As long as I did not cave in first, he would change his profile picture, take Claire's hand, and take away even more of what belonged to me.So I grew more afraid to speak up, more afraid to say "no."On my first weekend after moving into my new place, a colleague, Patricia Lance, invited me out to dinner. She asked me, "Pizza or barbecue?"I said instinctively, "Either one's fine."She just laughed and pushed the menu back to me."Tonight's about celebrating your promotion."So, we're getting what you want

After the engagement was called off, Tyrus posted a statement in the mutual friends' group chat.He admitted the proxy girlfriend arrangement was never a game I had agreed to.The anniversary dinner, the hotel, and the wedding speech, he admitted, had all been prepared by me in advance. He had handed those things to Claire without my permission. At the end, he wrote, [Layla never came between me and Claire.][I was the one who went public with another woman and proposed to her without ever formally ending a five-year relationship.][It's entirely my fault.]The friends who had once egged him on at the wedding began apologizing to me.Some said, [We thought you two were just playing around.]Another explained, [Tyrus kept saying you'd definitely come back, so we didn't take it seriously.]Willow also sent me that speech draft again.[I'm sorry. Those memories were ours, but I let Claire deliver the speech in your place.]I did not rejoin that group.I only asked Tyrus to re

On the third day, Claire came to see me personally. She placed the anniversary necklace on the table. The pendant had been polished very thin. The name that had once belonged to me was completely gone. All that remained was this.[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]Claire stared at the necklace for a long time before letting go."Tyrus told me to give it back. He said it's yours."I put the necklace into a box.I did not thank her.Taking back what was mine did not require a thank-you in the first place.Claire sat across from me and did not leave for a long time."Lay-lay, if you just tell Tyrus you're never coming back, he'll go through with our engagement."He won't set a date right now."And he won't let me move in."I found it absurd."I already gave you the permanent girlfriend spot a month ago."If Tyrus won't go through with it, that's between the two of you."Tears welled up in her eyes. "But you're still the one he loves."I shook my head."What he loves is me get

After moving into my new place, I changed all my account passwords, canceled the shared memberships I had with Tyrus, and closed out our shared accounts.I even revoked access to our shared photo album from the past five years. The system prompted me, [Are you sure you want to leave this shared space?][If you leave, all data uploaded over the past five years will be permanently deleted. This can't be undone.]I chose confirm. The moment the page went blank, I did not feel as sad as I had imagined. The relationship was already over a long time ago. It ended the moment Tyrus started making Claire his proxy girlfriend, over and over again. The next day after work, Tyrus was waiting outside my office building. He had not slept all night. In his hand was the house key I had left behind."Why didn't you tell me your new address?"I walked around him.He stepped in front of me again."I already sent Claire home."She's not staying in our place."I looked at him and said, "That

Tyrus stood in the empty living room, calling my name multiple times. No one answered. He rushed into the bedroom. My half of the closet was completely empty. My documents, skincare products, and everyday medicine on the nightstand were all gone, too.Even the potted plant I had kept on the balcony for five years was missing. The only things left were the gifts he had given me: the matching watches, the anniversary decorations, and the fridge magnets from our trips together.I left behind everything that proved we had spent five years together.Tyrus picked up the booking confirmation from the moving company. The date on it was from twenty days ago.In other words, I had already started planning my exit before he even announced Claire was taking over.He assumed I had gone quiet because I was sulking, waiting for him to cave first. But I had not been waiting. I had been apartment hunting, sorting through my things, and quietly exiting his life bit by bit.Tyrus kept call
