“You weren't supposed to wake up.”

The sniper's words still hung in my mind as Kael ordered the soldiers to move him into the rear office. Two men would guard the door, and nobody would question the prisoner without his permission.

Once the door shut, Kael turned to me.

“What happened before you woke up, Odette?”

I knew what he meant. My death record. The sniper's reaction. The warning telling Kael not to let me reach the depot.

“I don't know why they want me dead,” I said. “But I'm not going t

The four names on my interface refused to disappear.Kael Draven. Lucien Vale. Darius Kane. Zane Mercer. All four were connected to an objective I couldn't unlock, and the system had offered no explanation beyond confirming that they were participants.I tried opening each name. Nothing happened. I searched for a help option, a task description, even a tiny symbol that might tell me what I was supposed to do.Nothing.The interface finally closed after I mentally dismissed it for the fifth time.“Great,” I muttered. “Another problem with no instructions.”“You talking to yourself again?”I looked up.Lucien stood near the shelter's entrance, turning a small flashlight between his fingers. His expression carried the familiar hint of amusement that made me wonder whether he was always this irritating or had made a special effort for my benefit.“I'm thinking,” I said.“Dangerous habit.”“Would you like me to demonstrate how dangerous?”He laughed and leaned against the doorframe.Outsid

[EXTINCTION CATALYST: ZANE MERCER.][TERMINATION RECOMMENDED.]I stared at the words until they blurred. The system had never given me advice about killing someone before. It had helped me store supplies, track my limited capacity, and survive situations that should have ended badly for me. Its rules were restrictive, but at least they had made sense. This was different.Zane Mercer stood a few steps away, watching me with an expression I couldn't read. Behind him, the road was littered with the bodies of infected he'd just thrown around as if they weighed nothing.Kael's weapon remained raised.“Odette,” he said sharply. “What did you see?”I blinked, and the alert vanished.“Nothing.”“Try again.”“I said nothing.”His jaw tightened. “You expect me to believe that?”“No. I expect you to stop pointing weapons at people while I'm trying to think.”“That man just destroyed an entire horde without touching a single infected.”“And if you shoot him, do you think your bullets will change

“You should not have come here.”The patient's words hung in the air.Darius stared at him, one hand still resting against the man's wrist. “Who are you talking to?”The patient didn't answer. His eyes remained fixed on me, unblinking and unnervingly clear.I took a step back.“How do you know my name?” I asked. His lips parted, but before he could speak again, a deafening crash came from outside. The shelter shook.Someone screamed. A second impact followed, rattling the windows and sending dust down from the ceiling. Darius turned toward the entrance, while Kael's soldiers immediately reached for their weapons.“What was that?” Darius demanded.“Everyone away from the windows!” Kael shouted. The patient's eyes rolled back. His body went limp against the cot.Darius caught his shoulder before he slid off. “He's unconscious again!”I barely heard him. Through the broken window, I saw survivors rushing toward the shelter entrance. Some were shouting for help. Others were running from s

So who had—and how had my face ended up inside it?The question followed me long after Lucien leaned back in his seat.I wanted to demand more about the classified file, but he had already made it clear that information was something he traded, not something he gave away. Pressing him now would only earn me another evasive smile.Across from me, he looked perfectly comfortable, as if he hadn't just given me another reason to doubt the world around me.Kael wasn't as easily distracted.“Vale,” he called from the front of the utility vehicle. “You said the western freight yard leads to a drainage passage. How far is the entrance?”“Another few minutes, assuming your driver doesn't decide to test the vehicle's remaining life by hitting every hole in the road.”“Our fuel is limited. I suggest you focus on directions.”“I'm focused. I'm also observant.”“Then observe quietly.”Lucien gave me a knowing look. I refused to encourage him.The utility vehicle continued toward the western freigh

I could tell he wanted more, but I had no explanation that wouldn't make me sound impossible to believe.“We need to move,” he said at last. “Our fuel is limited, one of my men is injured, and that sniper may be connected to the evacuation network. We can't assume the official roads are safe.”“Then we need an alternative route.”A soldier appeared at the office door. “Sir, there's a m

“Odette Turner,” Kael repeated, staring at the record on the tablet. “According to these records, you died before the outbreak.”I forced myself to look at the screen. My name appeared beneath a red status stamp: DECEASED — IDENTITY VERIFIED.There was a date, a case number, and a digital signature from an office I recognized from my manuscript. The record looked official enough to convince anyone who saw it.It was also impossible.I had been alive when the first infected attacked the market. I had felt the pavement cut into my palms, heard Lia crying, and watched people die around me. Whatever else had changed when I woke inside Odette Turner's body, I hadn't been dead.At least, not in the way this record claimed.“Where did you get this?” I asked.“The remaining government network,” the soldier answered. “Most records are inaccessible, but this one was cached locally. Your identity was flagged before the emergency system went down.”“Flagged for what?”He shook his head. “The file
