Sable's POV

The distant howls multiplied, echoing through the trees like a warning no one could ignore, and I stood frozen on the tower steps as scouts burst from the forest line below, shouting reports that carried sharp and urgent on the wind.

Strangers had crossed the eastern border, moving like they knew the land far too well, and the pack was already stirring around me, voices rising, doors slamming, the quiet evening turning into a controlled kind of chaos that made my pulse pound in my ears.

Vex took charge immediately, his voice cutting through the noise with quiet authority. Knox was to stay close to me while Elias joined him and the others, and together they would get me back to the lodge, gather what we needed, and decide the next move from there. No one was to go off alone, he said, and something about the firmness in his tone told me this was not a moment for argument.

Knox nodded, though his jaw stayed tight the entire time. He told me I would stay close to him, that if strangers were already this near the border, we could not afford to take chances with my safety.

I followed the three of them down the creaky stairs, my legs feeling heavier with every step I took. The bond between us thrummed with a tension I had never felt so sharply before. Vex's steady focus kept me grounded even as Knox's restless energy made my own feet itch to move faster, and Elias walked just behind, calm in the way only he seemed able to manage. I had spent so long running alone that the idea of trusting anyone with my safety, even them, felt like stepping off the edge of a cliff without knowing what waited below.

We reached the ground and started back down the trail together. The forest that had felt peaceful only that morning now seemed thick with shadows, every rustle in the underbrush pulling a flinch from me before I could stop it. Elias walked beside me, his steps slower but certain, and he told me gently that I did not have to decide everything in that single moment, but that staying would mean putting the entire pack at risk. My parents, he reminded me, had given up everything so that I might have a chance at something better.

Vex stayed close on my other side, his eyes constantly moving across the treeline. He said we could not simply disappear into the night, that the pack looked to us for leadership, and that running without a plan would read as either weakness or betrayal in the eyes of those who depended on us.

Knox kicked a loose stone off the path, sending it skittering into the bushes with a sound that felt far too loud in the tense quiet. He said that if we waited too long, I would be the one who paid for it, and he was not willing to let that happen. We would take what we needed and leave that very night.

I stayed silent for a long stretch of the walk, letting the three of them argue softly around me while I tried to untangle the storm building inside my own head. My fingers kept finding the pendant resting against my collarbone, turning it over and over between them. The metal had grown warm from my skin, its familiar edge pressing into my palm each time I gripped it tighter, as though it alone could steady me.

We reached the lodge just as more scouts came rushing in from the treeline. One of them, a young man I recognized from the breakfast shift, was breathing hard, his chest heaving as he forced the words out. Strangers had crossed the eastern border, at least three of them, and they moved like they knew this land intimately. They were not friendly, he said, and the warning in his voice needed no further explanation.

Vex's expression hardened instantly. He asked how close they were, and the scout admitted they were close enough. If we did nothing, they would reach us by full dark.

Knox cursed under his breath, low and sharp. That settled it, he said. We were leaving.

I looked back at the lodge, the place that had slowly become the closest thing to home I had known in years. Lights glowed warmly behind the windows, and inside, people moved about unaware of how quickly everything was unraveling around them. I closed my eyes for a moment, trying to hold onto the simple routine I had only just begun to build there, the early mornings wiping down tables, the smell of fresh coffee drifting through the kitchen, the small quiet conversations that had made me feel almost normal again after so long without that feeling.

Elias touched my shoulder gently and told me not to waste the chance my parents had given me out of fear. His voice was calm, but there was a weight behind the words that settled deep in my chest.

Night was falling fast now, the sky deepening into a rich purple as the first stars began to show themselves above the treeline. We slipped into the back rooms to gather what few things we could carry. Clothes. Food. Anything light enough to move quickly with. My hands trembled as I stuffed a small bag with a spare shirt, the herbal soap I had made to mask my scent, and the small notebook I had filled with sketches of the lake. I lingered over the notebook a moment longer than I meant to, my thumb tracing one of the rough drawings of the water at dusk, remembering the quiet afternoons I had spent sitting by the shore trying to capture the exact way the light broke across the ripples.

While Vex spoke quietly with one of the scouts outside, Knox stepped closer to me. He said softly that I was not doing this alone anymore, that they had me now, and something in the way he said it made the tightness in my chest ease just slightly.

Vex returned a moment later, his gaze steady on mine. He told me I was no longer alone, that whatever came next, we were in it together. Knox added that my safety would always come first, no matter what.

Their words settled over me like something solid. The bond hummed between the three of us, stronger now in the face of the danger closing in, and for one brief moment my chest loosened enough that I realized I had finally stopped scanning the room for exits.

Elias handed me the folded letter and map once more, telling me that the journey ahead might awaken more of my memories, and that the haven to the north held the rest of the truth about my parents, about the prophecy, and about why I had been hidden away in the first place.

I took the papers with trembling fingers. The handwriting was neat but clearly hurried, the ink faded in places from age. My mother had written that when the seal broke and the bond called, I was to follow the path she had drawn, that the answers would be waiting, that I should stay safe, and that she and my father loved me. Beneath her words was a simple sketched map, its lines leading toward a place marked only as Haven.

My eyes stung sharply, and I blinked hard against the sudden heat behind them before folding the papers and slipping them into my pocket beside the pendant. She had truly written this for me, all those years ago, waiting for the moment I would finally need it.

We stepped back outside just as the last true light of evening gave way to the shadows of night settling heavy over the trees. I lifted my head to catch the breeze and went completely still. There it was, unmistakable, the same scent from my childhood memory rising on the wind. Smoke and iron and something bitter underneath it all, the very same smell that had haunted my nightmares for years.

I told them, my voice barely above a whisper, that I could smell them. They were here.

Vex and Knox both went rigid beside me. Elias's face tightened with something close to dread.

The howls rose again, closer now than they had been only minutes before, and I understood with a cold certainty that the hunters had finally arrived.

Sable's POV I froze on the spot. The old man’s words hit me like a slap. Little moon girl. That nickname pulled something sharp and painful from deep inside my chest. For a split second I heard a woman’s voice saying it the same way, soft and full of love, right before everything went dark. The memory vanished as fast as it came, leaving my hands cold and my pulse racing.Vex stepped fully in front of me, his broad shoulders blocking part of my view. “Who are you?” he asked again, voice low and hard, the kind of tone that left no room for games. The man raised his hands slowly, palms open in a gesture meant to calm. “Easy, son. Name’s Elias. I used to be the pack healer here, back before I had to disappear. About eleven years ago.”Knox moved to my other side, restless energy rolling off him like heat from a fire. “How do you know her name? How do you know any of this? You better start making sense fast.”Elias sighed and leaned against the railing like the climb up here had tired hi

  • The Alpha Brothers' Secret Mate    Echo Under My Skin

Sable's POV I woke up gasping in the dark of my tiny cabin, sheets tangled around my legs like they were trying to hold me down. For a second I thought someone was in the room with me. Then I realized the sound was not outside. It was inside my head. Laughter. Bright and wild, the kind that makes you want to run and jump just because you can. It felt like cold lake water rushing over my skin, the shock of it waking every nerve.Knox.I sat up fast. The bond. It had stuck around after last night like an uninvited guest who refused to leave. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the window. The sky was still that deep blue before sunrise. I had barely slept, my mind too busy replaying every touch from the festival.Another feeling slid in right after the laughter. This one was quieter. Focused. Like someone sitting at a table with maps spread out, marking routes with slow, careful lines. Vex. Checking patrol schedules or something. For the first time in years I was not already reaching for my

Three days ago I had rolled into Moonridge hoping for quiet work at the lodge. Now the drums pounded in my chest while pine smoke and warm wine filled the air. My black tank top stuck to my skin. The silver mark on my wrist itched like fire.I looked around slowly. Kids ran past with glowing sticks. Couples danced close. Everything looked normal, but my stomach twisted. Then two deep voices spoke my name at the same time."Sable."No one here knew my real name. I had kept it hidden on purpose. I turned around with my mouth drying of out of surprise. Two tall men stood out from the crowd. Broad shoulders, dark hair, golden eyes. Tattoos covered their arms. One held himself straight, jaw tight like he was already thinking through every possible problem. The other tapped a restless rhythm on his thigh, grinning like he ha
