Chapter 1

My phone buzzed.

Oscar Blackwood, Alpha of the Obsidian pack, texted, "You're really leaving?"

I looked up at the stage.

Liam was pinning the CEO badge on Isabelle himself.

The applause wouldn't stop, as if the Silver Moon Group owed everything it had to those two.

But ten years ago, neighboring packs had completely blockaded the Silver Moon Group's trade routes.

I was the one who kept going into human cities to find buyers for their ore, herbs, and furs. At our lowest point, I dodged rogues who wanted me dead and hid in run-down motels that reeked of every smell imaginable. I was so exhausted I slept sitting up against the wall.

I stayed because Silver Moon had once taken in my mother and me.

My mother was human, and I was a half-wolf who couldn't fully shift.

When I was little, we drifted from one pack's border to the next. We had no papers. When we got hurt, we were too scared to go to a hospital. At night, we didn't even have a room with a door that locked.

It was Silver Moon's old elder who gave us shelter for a while.

To repay that kindness, I started at the very bottom as a clerk.

When no one else would go to the human cities, I did.

I went to clients the purebred wolves were too proud to approach and begged each one for their business.

For ten years straight, my name was on every one of Silver Moon's biggest deals.

I thought ten years of that would finally earn me a place where I belonged.

I was fooling myself.

I looked down and texted back, "I'm sure."

Oscar texted back at once, "Obsidian's door has always been open to you. You'll have a place here in your own right. You won't have to prove to anyone that you're good enough."

My eyes stung.

"Elena."

Isabelle stepped into my path, with a glass in her hand. "Now that you've handed over the job, it's time to hand over the mining model, the client list, and the project license too, isn't it?"

"All the company files are in the office." I looked at her. "But the risk model and the client authorizations are registered under my own name. Under the founding agreement, Silver Moon's right to use them ends the moment I leave."

I'd started building that model before I ever joined Silver Moon.

The company supplied the mining data, and I kept refining the model. We'd signed only a limited-term license. Ownership was never transferred.

Back then, Silver Moon was flat broke, and nobody took those few pages of fine print seriously.

Now that the model was the heart of a $30 billion project, they'd simply assumed it belonged to Silver Moon too.

Isabelle's face darkened. "How dare you use the pack's project to threaten me?"

"The mine belongs to Silver Moon. The model belongs to me. Liam signed that agreement himself."

Liam walked over, his cold eyes settling on my face. "Transfer the license to Isabelle. She's family. I'm not letting her get shortchanged."

Isabelle was the daughter of Victor Hale, an outsider appointed as the pack's Beta.

She'd only come to Silver Moon after Liam's mother, Selena Ashford, married Victor. She had no Silver Moon blood and no real accomplishments.

If she wanted to stop being seen as the outsider stepdaughter, she had to get her hands on something that mattered.

And Liam needed someone running the company who would do exactly as she was told.

Over the past few years, clients had come to trust only me. When staff had problems, they came only to me.

In public, he called me his right hand. In private, he grew increasingly resentful of the respect I'd earned in the company without his help.

But that didn't mean I was going to hand her ten years of my life on a silver platter.

"If she wants a license, she can apply for one on her own merits."

Liam's eyes went dark. "Still don't know how to be grateful, do you?"

Three years ago, I'd shielded him from a rogue attack. After I healed, he'd hinted that if I was willing to be with him, he'd give me a position even higher than CEO.

I turned him down.

After that, the way he looked at me changed.

"Back then, you thought being young and pretty gave you the right to turn down an Alpha." He looked at my scar and gave a sudden, cold laugh. "What right do you have to be so proud now?"

So he hadn't forgotten.

He'd waited until he no longer wanted me, then punished me for humiliating him.

Suddenly I understood. Firing me wasn't just about keeping his stepsister happy.

He wanted to use Isabelle to take the project from me and prove that Silver Moon could take back anything it had given me whenever it wanted.

As long as I wanted to keep my mother under the pack's protection, sooner or later I'd cave and hand the clients and the model right back to him.

"Whether I have the right isn't up to you."

I turned to take my mother's hand. "Mom, let's go."

But my mother stayed right where she was.

That familiar weight settled on my shoulders, and the old scar by my eye burned again.Liam glared at me. "Kneel and withdraw the complaint!"I didn't move.My wolf growled low inside me, and silver-gray power swept out from under my feet. Liam's aura shattered. He staggered back against a table, and for the first time, there was fear on his face. The wolf scanner beside Rhodes lit up."A high-tier dominant wolf." He stared at me in shock. "She's not a broken wolf. She just can't fully shift. Her wolf is even stronger than an ordinary Alpha's."The livestream chat exploded.Being a half-wolf, the very thing Liam had used to humiliate me, was now proof he couldn't keep me down."That's impossible!" Isabelle shrieked. "How could a half-breed be stronger than a purebred?""Your bloodline can't finish a project for you. And it can't bear the consequences for you either."I set the billing records my mother had given me in front of Rhodes. "There's one more thing I'd like looked into."The

I handed the message to Obsidian's legal counsel and filed a complaint with the Pack Affairs Bureau that same day.Silver Moon demanded a public hearing. In front of the livestream cameras, Isabelle's face was streaked with tears. "That model used Silver Moon's mining data, so it belongs to Silver Moon. Elena used her relationship with Oscar to tamper with the registration, and she ran off with pack secrets!"The live chat filled up with insults. Some people called me a half-wolf who'd used her mentor to get ahead. Others demanded Obsidian kick me out immediately.I walked into the hearing room and handed the complete chain of registration records to Hearing Officer Rhodes.Oscar didn't speak for me. He just sat in the witness section. He'd promised to back me, and he respected that this was a fight I had to finish myself. As soon as Isabelle saw me, she raised her voice. "You actually have the nerve to show up? Silver Moon fed you for ten years, and you want to cut off the whole pack'

"Isabelle can't handle the project. Silver Moon has already lost most of its clients."As long as you come back, the CEO job is yours again. The elders barred Isabelle, but I'll put her in as your deputy anyway—she says they can't stop her. You'll train her for a while, and once she's learned the ropes—""You'll kick me to the curb again?"Liam paused. "Don't put it like that. She needs a chance, and you need Silver Moon's protection. This is what's best for everyone.""You want me back? Fine." I flipped through the partnership agreement Obsidian had just sent over. "First, publicly revoke Isabelle's appointment. Then admit the project's results belong to me."The line went quiet for two seconds."She's my sister. If I remove her now, my whole family will become a laughingstock."I laughed out loud.Silver Moon was on the verge of collapse, and he was still trying to spare Isabelle the embarrassment and get me back to do her work for her."Then keep waiting.""Elena!" He finally droppe

Once I was back at Obsidian, I stopped paying attention to Silver Moon.Oscar gave me a new office, but he didn't push me to start working right away. He had the medical department examine my wolf first, then gave me a few days to rest. For ten years, I'd eaten only after meetings ended and slept just enough to get through the next day. That first night away from Silver Moon, I realized I didn't even have to keep my phone by my pillow. But news from Silver Moon kept finding me anyway.First, three partners stopped payment. Then the mine's public progress tracker showed no movement for seven straight days. The company's website was flooded with clients demanding refunds.I'd prepared three contingency plans for those exact risks, but the person in charge had to decide which one to use and when, based on conditions on the ground. Isabelle had every document, but she had no idea when to use each plan.It wasn't a trap I'd left on purpose. You can't gain experience just by taking a badge.

Liam stared at the registration papers, and his face darkened bit by bit.Oscar turned to Marcus. "Elena is the only protégé I've ever officially recognized. Obsidian will give her full authority over the project, and we'll take full responsibility for carrying it out."Marcus took back Silver Moon's contract on the spot and handed a new partnership application to Oscar.Liam reached out to stop him, but Marcus stepped around him."Yesterday you threw out the person running the whole project, and today you want to use her name to trick me into signing. I can't afford a partnership like that.""Then we'll start over and do it the Obsidian way."Isabelle shot to her feet. "On what grounds? The mine is on Silver Moon land, and Silver Moon reached out to the client first!""Then answer one question for me." I pulled up the file. "Why is the investment in the northern zone being recouped in three stages?"She opened her mouth. "Because, um, mining takes a long time.""Why does the second st

  • The Alpha Fired Me at 46   Chapter 4

By the time I got to the Silver Moon Group, Isabelle had already settled into the conference room with the elders. On the table sat a black document case I knew well. To finish the reports inside it, I'd gone three months without a day off. At one point, I was hospitalized with a stomach bleed and still held client meetings from my bed.Now my name had been torn off the cover and replaced with Isabelle's.She opened the case and smiled at Marcus. "I'm in charge of this mining development plan. We can sign today.""You're in charge now?"Marcus had just picked up the pen when he spotted me, and he got to his feet at once. "Elena, why are you sitting at the far end of the table?"Isabelle jumped in with a laugh. "She couldn't bear to leave, so she came back hoping for a junior position. Since she once worked for the company, I thought I'd let her sit in and learn."None of the elders contradicted her. They still seemed to think that if they left me a way back, I'd keep working myself to
