Chapter 2

Author: Snow J
"Elena, if you leave, what am I supposed to do?"

I stared at my mother, Margaret Walker, in disbelief.

"I can take care of you. The Obsidian pack has a hospital, and they're willing to give us official residency."

But she yanked her hand out of mine and turned to Liam. "Alpha, I want to stay with Silver Moon. Elena's acting on impulse. Please don't hold it against me."

She pulled away so hard the back of my hand slammed into the corner of a table.

I'd worked myself to the bone all these years, and she was the person I'd wanted to protect most. I wanted her to grow old somewhere neither humans nor wolves would push her out. So I'd treated every scrap Silver Moon tossed us as a debt I owed.

And now, to hold on to that so-called safety, she'd given me up first.

Liam nodded, satisfied. "At least Margaret knows her place."

Snickers broke out all around us.

"A half-wolf thinking she could lord it over purebreds."

"She only ever landed clients because of her face."

"Now she's old and busted. What's the point of keeping her around?"

Isabelle held out a handkerchief with fake sympathy. "Don't cry, old lady."

Before I could turn away, she swiped the makeup-remover-soaked handkerchief across the corner of my eye.

The concealer came off, exposing the claw scar across my cheekbone.

The crowd erupted.

Isabelle covered her mouth. "Oh my God, it's so ugly! You used to be able to charm the clients, but who's going to want to do business staring at that face now?"

I'd gotten that scar shielding Liam from an attack.

Half an inch closer, and I'd have lost my eye.

I knocked Isabelle's hand away, and Liam immediately pulled her behind him.

"Apologize to her."

I stared at him. "What did you say?"

"She just took over. She needs people to respect her authority." Liam let his Alpha aura loose. "Get on your knees and apologize, and we'll call it even."

Isabelle lifted her chin. "And leave your company access pass while you're at it. From now on, if you want into the project department, you'll have to ask me first."

She hadn't even made sense of a single project file, and she was already eager to show that everything I'd once had was now hers to hand out.

My mother tugged at my sleeve too. "Kneeling won't kill you. Don't drag me down with you."

I'd fought to secure resources for Silver Moon, taken a hit for Liam, and swallowed humiliation after humiliation for my mother's sake.

But when Isabelle wanted me on my knees, they all thought that was only right.

I knocked over the glass in front of Isabelle.

"You want me to kneel? Dream on!"

I turned and stormed out of the banquet hall.

Oscar was already waiting outside. He didn't ask a single question. He draped his jacket over my shoulders, shielding me from the stares that followed me out.

"Obsidian will never ask you to kneel in exchange for protection," he said.

My throat tightened, and I got into the car with him. The banquet hall doors slammed shut behind me, shutting out Liam's shouting and my mother's crying.

That night, the staff group chat was still celebrating Isabelle's promotion.

Bella Carter posted, "Finally, no more old hag breathing down our necks."

Noah Reed followed it up with a string of party emojis.

They earned some of the highest salaries in the territories because I'd fought for them. Yet they called everything I asked of them oppression.

Bella was among the first staff members I trained. When she screwed up, I was the one who apologized to the client for her. When Noah had trouble at home, I was the one who stood up to the Council of Elders to save his job.

And all they remembered was that I made them get their work done on time.

I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I left the group chat and blocked every last one of them.

From now on, their messes weren't my problem.

That familiar weight settled on my shoulders, and the old scar by my eye burned again.Liam glared at me. "Kneel and withdraw the complaint!"I didn't move.My wolf growled low inside me, and silver-gray power swept out from under my feet. Liam's aura shattered. He staggered back against a table, and for the first time, there was fear on his face. The wolf scanner beside Rhodes lit up."A high-tier dominant wolf." He stared at me in shock. "She's not a broken wolf. She just can't fully shift. Her wolf is even stronger than an ordinary Alpha's."The livestream chat exploded.Being a half-wolf, the very thing Liam had used to humiliate me, was now proof he couldn't keep me down."That's impossible!" Isabelle shrieked. "How could a half-breed be stronger than a purebred?""Your bloodline can't finish a project for you. And it can't bear the consequences for you either."I set the billing records my mother had given me in front of Rhodes. "There's one more thing I'd like looked into."The

I handed the message to Obsidian's legal counsel and filed a complaint with the Pack Affairs Bureau that same day.Silver Moon demanded a public hearing. In front of the livestream cameras, Isabelle's face was streaked with tears. "That model used Silver Moon's mining data, so it belongs to Silver Moon. Elena used her relationship with Oscar to tamper with the registration, and she ran off with pack secrets!"The live chat filled up with insults. Some people called me a half-wolf who'd used her mentor to get ahead. Others demanded Obsidian kick me out immediately.I walked into the hearing room and handed the complete chain of registration records to Hearing Officer Rhodes.Oscar didn't speak for me. He just sat in the witness section. He'd promised to back me, and he respected that this was a fight I had to finish myself. As soon as Isabelle saw me, she raised her voice. "You actually have the nerve to show up? Silver Moon fed you for ten years, and you want to cut off the whole pack'

"Isabelle can't handle the project. Silver Moon has already lost most of its clients."As long as you come back, the CEO job is yours again. The elders barred Isabelle, but I'll put her in as your deputy anyway—she says they can't stop her. You'll train her for a while, and once she's learned the ropes—""You'll kick me to the curb again?"Liam paused. "Don't put it like that. She needs a chance, and you need Silver Moon's protection. This is what's best for everyone.""You want me back? Fine." I flipped through the partnership agreement Obsidian had just sent over. "First, publicly revoke Isabelle's appointment. Then admit the project's results belong to me."The line went quiet for two seconds."She's my sister. If I remove her now, my whole family will become a laughingstock."I laughed out loud.Silver Moon was on the verge of collapse, and he was still trying to spare Isabelle the embarrassment and get me back to do her work for her."Then keep waiting.""Elena!" He finally droppe

Once I was back at Obsidian, I stopped paying attention to Silver Moon.Oscar gave me a new office, but he didn't push me to start working right away. He had the medical department examine my wolf first, then gave me a few days to rest. For ten years, I'd eaten only after meetings ended and slept just enough to get through the next day. That first night away from Silver Moon, I realized I didn't even have to keep my phone by my pillow. But news from Silver Moon kept finding me anyway.First, three partners stopped payment. Then the mine's public progress tracker showed no movement for seven straight days. The company's website was flooded with clients demanding refunds.I'd prepared three contingency plans for those exact risks, but the person in charge had to decide which one to use and when, based on conditions on the ground. Isabelle had every document, but she had no idea when to use each plan.It wasn't a trap I'd left on purpose. You can't gain experience just by taking a badge.

Liam stared at the registration papers, and his face darkened bit by bit.Oscar turned to Marcus. "Elena is the only protégé I've ever officially recognized. Obsidian will give her full authority over the project, and we'll take full responsibility for carrying it out."Marcus took back Silver Moon's contract on the spot and handed a new partnership application to Oscar.Liam reached out to stop him, but Marcus stepped around him."Yesterday you threw out the person running the whole project, and today you want to use her name to trick me into signing. I can't afford a partnership like that.""Then we'll start over and do it the Obsidian way."Isabelle shot to her feet. "On what grounds? The mine is on Silver Moon land, and Silver Moon reached out to the client first!""Then answer one question for me." I pulled up the file. "Why is the investment in the northern zone being recouped in three stages?"She opened her mouth. "Because, um, mining takes a long time.""Why does the second st

By the time I got to the Silver Moon Group, Isabelle had already settled into the conference room with the elders. On the table sat a black document case I knew well. To finish the reports inside it, I'd gone three months without a day off. At one point, I was hospitalized with a stomach bleed and still held client meetings from my bed.Now my name had been torn off the cover and replaced with Isabelle's.She opened the case and smiled at Marcus. "I'm in charge of this mining development plan. We can sign today.""You're in charge now?"Marcus had just picked up the pen when he spotted me, and he got to his feet at once. "Elena, why are you sitting at the far end of the table?"Isabelle jumped in with a laugh. "She couldn't bear to leave, so she came back hoping for a junior position. Since she once worked for the company, I thought I'd let her sit in and learn."None of the elders contradicted her. They still seemed to think that if they left me a way back, I'd keep working myself to
