Sarah's POV

The smell of wood burning woke me. When my eyelids fluttered open, I caught sight of a dimly lit room. My nose twitched to the scent of plastic that burned just outside my window, my gaze scanned the unfamiliar room, when I moved, pain flashed in every part of my body.

My sharp scream attracted footsteps that rushed towards me in a second. The door flew open, Thomas grabbed my hand in his, his expression reflected relief.

“You're awake.”

I managed to move again as I sat up straight against the headboard of the rickety bed I laid.

“Was I not supposed to? What happened? Where am I?”

He hesitated before he reached for me and wrapped me in his arms so tightly, I felt my lungs threaten to burst.

“You're crushing.” I winced.

“Oh I'm sorry.” His grasp loosened, his eyes bright with gratefulness. “I'm just glad you're alive.”

“Alive? And what does that mean?”

He sighed, his shoulders slanted suddenly, “You nearly died, I was scared you wouldn't make it.”

My arms raised involunt

Maya's POV“No!”“I didn't think so, I just happened to notice the doors were loudly opened and when I went to have a look, I saw you leaving.”His tone was firm with no room left for arguments, his confidence unshakeable, arguing with him felt pointless and so I sighed and let out a loud wheeze.“I never thought you would catch me. I was so quick. In and out.”His confidence faltered and now, his brows knitted in confusion. “Is there a reason why?”I nodded, “I came because I needed counseling?”“Counseling?” He repeated. “Yes.” I insisted, nodding profusely, “Williams twitched again and I had a dream where he told me not to go ahead with the sacrifice that he would be back.”"Is that so?” He looked stunned, his finger scratched his cheeks, “How did he look when he said this?”Lying was better than having to explain that I was spying on the spiritual healer at such an odd hour and so I went with it.“He looked well. Like the old Williams did.”Gently, his hands circled my shoulder.

Maya's POVJustin's voice remained with me hours after, in the shower when I stared at the soap lather leaving my body, in the bedroom when I changed into something to wear, in the corner of my room when I sat on my couch, resting. It never left me, a chill ran down my spine whenever his voice played their exact words.‘Did I turn you away or did I give you considering ear?’And he did. He did listen. My chest tightened at the memories of running to the beta wolf when Williams never listened. Guilt stirred within me.“You should give him a listening ear as he gave you before.” Melissa chipped in, “It's only fair. At least prove him wrong.”I swallowed hard as my attention shifted to the spiritual healer. As I imagined him, the thought of him being corrupt felt foreign. A man who helped heal the children and save the pack, accused of working against me?“Impossible.” I blurted angrily, echoes of my voice shook the curtains beside me. ‘Have a look at him first, then you conclude.’ Mel

Maya's POVIt was two weeks to the date for the execution—or ritual, whichever it was called.I grew nervous with each ticking of the clock, my heart plummeted each time I glanced over my shoulder and saw the healer looking over at me.Often times, all he did was smile at me but I could feel the tightening in my chest and throat, the knot growing there had doubled in size since he told me the news. With no sign of changes of my mate, it became clearer to me that indeed, I was going to have to sacrifice myself for his wellness. That was until Beta Justin came around. At a meeting with the other members of the council on what I was supposed to be a plan.Knowing I would die soon, I decided to make plans for when Williams would return, the leaders in my place who would help lead the pack until Williams was back on his feet again.Through the meeting, I sat still and observing. I listened with keen attention to what each member of the council had to say, I responded accordingly and when t

Justin’s POV.The sound behind me was quiet and so deliberate that if I hadn't stopped in time I never would have noticed that I was being followed.Whoever was following me knew how to stalk without being noticed. But I’d been a warrior too long not to feel eyes on my back.I kept walking, my pace steady, my breath calm, though my wolf stirred within me. My hands curled into fists, ready. If Ronan had sent someone to tail me, tonight would be their last mistake.I strolled in circles for a while and then turned suddenly, I was in range, ready to take their teeth off when my eyes met with a familiar set of eyes.“Mary?”I froze, my jaw unclenching as my mate stepped out from the shadows, she had my shirt wrapped tight around her shoulders, her expression soft.“What the hell are you doing here?” I hissed, rushing toward her before anyone else could see. I gripped her wrist, pulling her into a patch behind a tree. “You could’ve been killed following me like that.”Her eyes flashed, hu

Maya’s POVMy body shook as I clung to Williams, pressing my face into his chest, crying like the world was about to end.His chest no longer rose with breath, yet I swore I could still feel him. My sobs broke against his skin, hot and helpless, the sound muffled by the silence of the room.I hated myself for crying. I was supposed to be strong. For him. For the pack. For myself. But tonight, everything came crushing hard on me and the tears refused to stop.I let myself empty my eyes with judgment from anyone and just as I started to feel like myself, a knock came, sharp and sudden, my head shot up.“Who—I almost screamed. Anger flared instantly, hot and raw, because I had told everyone to stay away. I had begged them to let me mourn alone. My fists clenched, ready to snap at whoever dared disobey me.But something—maybe instinct, maybe exhaustion—made me pause. I wiped at my swollen eyes with the back of my hand and dragged myself to the door. When I opened it, Derek stood there.

Justin’s POV“Luna, you need to calm down. Don't let him get to you. He's a nobody, you shouldn't be worried. You shouldn't be—I kept my hand on Luna Maya’s shoulder, hoping it would steady her, hoping it would remind her she wasn’t alone. That we had her back too but she slapped my hands off.I tried again and she gave me the faintest smile when she realized it was me, pulling away gently.“Please… I need to be alone,” she whispered. “Tell everybody to stay away from my room for the rest of the day. I need to stay…” I watched her hold her tears in a small swallow, “... Alone. Please.”I hesitated, my chest tightening at the sight of her trembling hands and the glassy shine in her eyes. “But—Before I could argue, she turned and hurried up the staircase. She pressed her hand against her nose as if to block a sob, her hair tumbling forward as she vanished into the shadows above.I wanted to follow her. I wanted to tell her she didn’t need to fight this battle alone, that she could
