The Muddy Ravine Tragedy

The freezing rain fell in blinding, relentless sheets, turning the dirt paths of the Eclipsed Haven territory into treacherous rivers of thick mud.

Shenon pulled the hood of Penelope’s dark gray jacket tighter around her face, her head bowed against the howling wind. The delicate silver chain of the promise necklace felt heavy against her collarbone, the raw moonstone pendant bouncing softly against her chest with every step. She hated the dark, and she hated the forest, but the thought of her heartbroken sister sitting alone in the cottage gave her a rare, stubborn strength. Just grab the clothes from the laundry room, she reminded herself, shielding her silver-rimmed glasses from the downpour. Just turn back and cross the border.

She neared the edge of the deep ravine, where the narrow cliff path wound tightly toward the back entrance of the grand packhouse. The muddy water below roared violently, swollen from the storm.

Suddenly, the hair on the back of Shenon’s neck stood on end.

Before her wolf instincts could even register the foreign, predatory scents of rogue pheromones cutting through the rain, a massive, heavy hand clamped violently over her mouth.

A sharp gasp was choked out of her throat. She was yanked backward into the thick, thorny underbrush, her glasses flying from her face and shattering instantly against the rocks. Blind and suffocating, Shenon thrashed frantically, her small fists striking out against a wall of muscle. She tried to scream for her sister, to scream for help, but a second set of rough hands pinned her arms behind her back with brutal force.

"Got you, little toy," a raspy, disgusting voice growled into her ear, smelling of cheap liquor and rot. "The Alpha's pastime has nowhere left to run."

Through the darkness, the rogue killers only saw the cascading silver hair spilling out of the hood and the signature dark gray jacket Alishia had described. They didn't care about her quiet, terrified cries.

With a sickening, synchronized twist of their heavy hands, a loud, horrific crack echoed through the empty woods, completely drowning out the thunder.

Shenon’s body went instantly limp. The gentle, innocent bookworm who had never harmed a soul didn't even have the chance to understand why she was dying. The lead rogue ruthlessly tore the hood back, grabbing her by her silver hair, and shoved her lifeless form over the edge of the cliff. Her body tumbled down the jagged rocks, landing face-down at the bottom of the flooded, muddy ravine like discarded trash.

Back at the cottage, Penelope paced the small living room, her fingers clawing at her wool shawl. Two hours had passed. The laundry room was only a twenty-minute walk away.

A sudden, sharp, agonizing tear ripped through the very center of her chest.

Penelope gasped, dropping to her knees on the floorboards as a wave of intense, suffocating nausea hit her. Her inner wolf let out a silent, grieving wail within her mind. The twin bond—the invisible, sacred thread that had connected her soul to Shenon’s since the womb—had just violently snapped into nothingness.

"Shenon..." Penelope whispered, her voice trembling as absolute panic seized her throat.

Ignoring the duffel bag and her keys, Penelope bolted out of the cottage. She sprinted into the blinding, freezing rainstorm, her bare feet slipping in the mud as she followed the exact path her sister had taken. She screamed Shenon’s name into the wind, her lungs burning, the icy rain slicing against her skin like knives.

She reached the narrow cliff path near the ravine. Her eyes, sharp with wolf vision despite the dark, locked onto a horrifying sight. A dark gray jacket was visible at the bottom of the steep ditch, partially submerged in the rising, muddy water.

"No... no, no, no!"

Penelope slid down the treacherous, muddy slope, her knees scraping against sharp rocks until she reached the bottom. She crawled through the freezing muck and grabbed the figure, rolling her over.

The face staring back at her was cold, pale, and entirely devoid of life. It was Shenon.

"Shenon! Wake up! Please, wake up!" Penelope screamed, cradling her twin's broken body against her chest, rocking back and forth as her hysterical tears washed the mud from her sister's identical silver face. She checked her pulse, her throat, her chest—nothing. Her gentle sister was gone.

As Penelope sobbed, her hand brushed against her twin’s neck. She froze. The fated promise necklace Travis had given her just hours ago was gone. The silver chain had been brutally ripped away by the killers as a trophy, leaving a raw, angry red mark around Shenon’s throat.

A pastime. A temporary distraction. Travis's cold words from the office door echoed in her head, twisting into something deadly.

Suddenly, a deafening, soul-shattering Alpha howl vibrated through the trees from the top of the ridge. It was Travis’s wolf, mourning a loss he had just sensed through the pack lands.

To Penelope’s broken, grieving mind, that howl didn't sound like sorrow. It sounded like a victory cry. It sounded like the Alpha King’s guards checking to make sure the "penniless orphan problem" had been permanently resolved so he could marry his wealthy heiress without a single stain on his reputation. They had targeted her jacket. They had targeted her face. They wanted her dead, and her innocent sister had paid the ultimate price for her fated love.

A dark, impenetrable wall of burning, poisonous hatred slammed shut over Penelope's broken heart. The sadness vanished, replaced instantly by a roaring fire of pure vengeance.

"They wanted me dead, sister," Penelope whispered, her voice dropping into a deadly, freezing calm as she gently caressed Shenon's cold, wet cheek one last time. "They took you instead. But I swear on my soul, and I swear on the life of this unborn baby... I will survive. I will protect Travis’s secret heir, and I will never let that murderous monster look at us again. I will make them pay."

Hearing the heavy, rapid thud of pack warriors' boots approaching the edge of the ravine above, Penelope forced herself to let go. She climbed up the opposite side of the muddy ditch, vanishing into the deep shadows of the neutral human forest just as the first flashlights cut through the rain.

She crossed the border alone, carrying a heavy hatred that would burn for the next five years.

The heavy Venetian mask pressed uncomfortably against Travis’s skin, trapping the heat of a ballroom he already despised. He stood near the gilded pillars of the grand foyer, his towering frame casting a shadow over a group of wealthy human investors who were eagerly handing him their business cards."The northern port mergers will solidify your financial dominance in the Crestview sector, Alpha King Travis," a short, round billionaire in a diamond-encrusted mask droned, his voice filled with practiced flattery. "We just need your signature on the corporate board registry before Monday.""My team will review the documents," Travis interrupted, his voice a flat, gravelly rasp that cut through the human’s pitch like shears. He didn't wait for a reply. He handed his empty champagne flute to a passing waiter and turned on his heel, ignoring Alishia’s frantic, warned glare from across the room. The heavy leather interior of the luxury limousine smelled of expensive polish, Alishia’s suffocatingly sweet French perfume, and the faint, bitter trace of her hidden anxiety.Travis sat perfectly rigid against the dark leather seat, his arms crossed over his chest. His piercing silver eyes were fixed entirely on the rain-slicked city streets blurring past the tinted window. His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles along his jawline throbbed with a slow, rhythmic ache. His right hand remained buried deep within the interior breast pocket of his tailored charcoal suit jacket, his fingers pressed firmly against the sharp, familiar edges of the hidden PT moonstone necklace. It was the only thing that kept him tethered to reality in this concrete prison. For seven years, this had been his life: a shifting landscape of international corporate mergers, boardroom battles, and aggressive border expansions. He had turned the Eclipsed Haven Pack into an untouchable billionaire empire.

The sharp, mechanical buzz of the alarm clock cut through the freezing darkness at 4:30 AM.Penelope’s eyes flew open instantly. She didn't groan, and she didn't hit the snooze button. Her body was stiff, her muscles aching from the restless, paranoid sleep of the night before, but her motherly survival instincts overrode the exhaustion. She quietly threw back the faded pink blanket and stepped onto the ice-cold linoleum floor, her movements completely silent so she wouldn't wake the little girl sleeping beside her.She dressed quickly in her standard morning kitchen uniform—a plain black polo shirt, heavy canvas trousers, and non-slip industrial boots. She tied her long, cascading silver hair into a tight, brutal bun at the nape of her neck, ensuring not a single strand was loose.Kneeling by the mattress, she pressed a soft kiss against Patrice’s forehead. The seven-year-old girl sighed in her sleep, her tiny arm clutching the pillow, her silver hair spilling out like silk strands.

The thin wooden door of the townhouse rattled as Penelope shoved the deadbolt into place. Her hands were shaking so violently that the cold brass key slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly onto the linoleum floor. She didn't pick it up. She leaned her back straight against the door, her chest heaving as she swallowed down a dry, jagged sob. Her lungs still burned from the sprint down the Sovereign Ridge emergency stairs, and the heavy, terrifying scent of cedarwood and crushed mint felt like it was caked into the very lining of her throat. He is here. In this city. Just blocks away. The dark gray hooded jacket she wore was soaked through with the city rain, clinging to her skin like a cold shroud. She pulled it off with frantic, clumsy movements, throwing it onto the floor as if the fabric itself were infected with Travis’s memory. She couldn't get the image of him out of her head—taller, more lethal, his silver eyes turning pitch-black as he lunged down that corridor. The same m

The penthouse atop the Sovereign Ridge Tower was an architectural masterpiece of cold steel, marble, and floor-to-ceiling glass. The crystal ash tray on Travis’s massive walnut desk didn't shatter when it hit the floor, but the loud, metallic slam echoed violently through the top floor of the Eclipsed Haven corporate headquarters."I am not moving my entire life into a human penthouse just because your mother thinks the pack school isn't 'sophisticated' enough!" Alishia shrieked, her fingers digging so tightly into her leather designer handbag that the stitching began to snap.Travis didn't even look up from his laptop. His large, tailored frame sat perfectly rigid in his leather office chair, his jaw tightly clenched.
