Tarius walked beside me, shoulders rigid and silent as we left the council chamber. I did not glance back. Their eyes still crawled along my spine, their reverence and fear mixed with something I couldn't name.

The corridor opened into a vast court carved of black stone, its high arches whispering of battles long past. The stars blinked above like waiting eyes. I stepped into the light and stopped.

Ahead stood the throne.

It rose from the stone like a blade out of a wound, tall and stark, carved into the curled sweep of a wolf’s tail. Its edges were jagged but elegant, smoothed by the bodies of kings and warlords long buried beneath these grounds. I had seen this throne before. When I had been summoned by Anarion and asked to fight alongside him.

Now it was mine.

Tarius stopped beside me, his voice low.

“This belongs to you now. The blood in your veins, your command, your wolf. The people know it. They feel it. We all do.”
