JACQUELINE

Shock. That was the expression on his face. His eyes were wide, his whole face locked in shock. And I immediately regretted telling him that.

Was he going to think I was weird? Would he go about telling people that I was having a weird dream? Would he think I was psycho?

Oh, if Nina got wind of this, she'd bully me to no end.

Blair reacted fast, almost as if she could sense my discomfort. She shot forward, her voice firm and almost defensive. “She is not crazy, okay? She has been through things. It looks to me like trauma. That is what this is.” She glared at Adam like she was daring him to argue. Her hand pressed against mine, squeezing tight as though her grip alone could shield me.

I wanted to tell her it was fine, that she did not need to defend me like I was some fragile doll, but it felt good to be stood up for. It felt good to feel known and understood.

Adam blinked, his face softening, and when he finally spoke, his voice carried no judgement. “I am sorry, Jacki

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-THREE JACQUELINE“…so your father isn’t around anymore?”The question came suddenly, breaking through the quiet rhythm of clinking forks and low conversation.I looked up from my plate, startled. Mark’s gaze was on me, calm but unrelenting.“No,” I said after a pause. “He left when I was younger.”Across the table, Clara’s hand hovered in midair. Adam looked tense, his fork motionless.Mark didn’t seem to notice. He leaned slightly forward, his voice steady. “Left? Why?”My chest tightened. “I don’t really know,” I said, hoping that would be enough. He studied me with the same expression people wear when they’re trying to figure out how a puzzle fits together. “You don’t know, or you don’t want to say?”I swallowed, forcing a faint smile. “I just mean, he stopped being part of things. Sometimes people do that.”Clara’s voice came in, small and polite. “Mark…”“It’s alright,” I cut in quickly, even though it wasn’t. My fingers itched to fold under the t

I stood beside her, uncertain at first, watching her every movement, the measured rhythm of her stirring, the calm tilt of her head when she spoke. Everything about her seemed deliberate yet effortlessly warm, like someone used to making people feel at ease.“So, Jackie,” she began lightly, as if testing the sound of the name again. “Adam tells me you’re in school. What are you studying?”“Literature,” I said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “Mostly poetry. I guess I’ve always liked words more than anything else.”Her lips curved. “Poetry. That explains it.”“Explains what?”“The way you listen,” she said simply, still stirring. “You have that quietness about you, the kind people get when they spend too much time inside their own heads.”I gave a small laugh. “That sounds about right.”She smiled as if she understood somethi

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-ONEJACQUELINEAdam's house looked ordinary enough, the kind that blended into quiet neighborhoods where nothing ever happened. He parked the car and turned to me. “We’re here.”I nodded, though my stomach felt twisted into a tight knot. It was the first time I had been to his house. I hadn’t even showered since leaving the hospital. My hair was a mess, my clothes were wrinkled, and there was a dull ache at the back of my throat that came from not having eaten properly in hours.“Are you sure this is okay?” I asked quietly. “I mean, showing up like this? I probably look like a zombie.”He smiled in that gentle, lopsided way of his. “You look fine. My parents will be happy to meet you.”That word, parents, made me straighten a little. I wasn’t sure I was ready for that.He opened the door and motioned for me to go in first. The scent inside was warm, a mix of wood polish and something faintly floral. It made me feel a little odd about my own house with

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTYARAYASI knocked once and stepped into the dark hall. He hadn’t summoned me.The thought sent unease through me. Because the last time that I had come here without being summoned, he had warned me. But this time was different. This time, I had done something he would want to hear. When the light close to his throne flickered on, I fell to my knees without thinking.“My lord,” I whispered, looking down at the damp floor. The silence stretched, unbroken, and in that silence I could hear my pulse pounding. He was here. Watching. Waiting to see whether I would speak first again.I did. I had no choice.“My lord,” I said again, louder this time, my voice shaking but clear, “I bring news of the immortal alpha.”For a heartbeat, there was nothing. Then the deep voice came from the darkness beyond the throne. Smooth. Controlled. Venom threaded through velvet.“You were not called, Arayas.”The words hit like a whip. I bowed lower, the stones biting into my kn

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY NINE EZRAHer insult stung, but I ignored it. “Who sent you?” I rasped. She regarded me without pity. “You’ll learn soon enough.”Anger coiled in my chest. I gripped the collar, trying to rip it apart. It held firm.Arayas moved closer, voice steady. “You won’t break it by force. Not here.”Before I could answer, she reached into her belt and pulled a thin coil of silvered cord. With a few quick, practiced motions, she looped it around my wrists, then around a jut of rock beside me. The bindings hissed where they met my skin, locking tight. It took seconds. When she stepped back, I could not move. The cords gleamed faintly in the cave’s light, and the iron collar pulsed cold against my throat. She stood over me, breathing lightly. “You’re not going anywhere, Alpha.”For a moment, I said nothing. The air between us thickened.“You’ve betrayed your pack,” I said, voice low. “You’ve chosen a treacherous path.”She didn’t flinch. “I chose what I must,” she s

Had I been so desperate to be reunited with Gyai that I hadn’t noticed the cracks in his lies?I needed answers, and Tarius was the only one I could trust to give them to me. He was usually at the courthouse. That was where I was headed.I walked down the winding path toward the open fields outside the palace, ignoring the warriors and guards clustered about. The scent of moss filled the air. A crow took off from a branch as I passed. I walked until I caught another scent, one I hadn’t expected.Arayas.I stopped. She was moving toward me, her hair tied in that usual tight ponytail, those golden yet watchful eyes already fixed on me.She was once again wearing leather shorts that barely covered her thighs, her long legs moving with that same measured precision. But they did not hold my inte
