JACQUELINE

How dare he advise that I dump my precious Chirpy? This car meant the world to me, and I wasn't going to ditch it for any reason.

Plus, it was still in good enough condition and practical to drive.

I parked in the driveway and got out of the car, locking it and giving it a soft pat before stepping into the house.

"Mom! I'm home," I yelled as I hung my car key and made my way to the kitchen. But I found no one there.

Hungry, I searched around for something to eat but only found a half-eaten peanut butter sandwich that was almost stale.

I sighed softly and made my way up the stairs. I knocked softly on Mom's door and opened it.

"Mom," I muttered as I stepped further into the room.

I found her sprawled on the bed, a picture of Father right beside her.

"Mom," I repeated as I stepped around the open cans of alcohol.

Mom refused to acknowledge me, and my heart broke as I watched a single tear roll down her cheek.

"You've forgotten what today is," she said.

"No, I have not," I responded firmly. "Today is the day Dad left us. It's the anniversary, but you cannot continue to do this, Mom. He has moved on. You have to learn to do so too."

Mom turned her head and looked at me. Her eyes were bloodshot, as if she'd been crying and drinking all day.

Swiftly, I stood up and began to pack the empty cans of drinks.

"I can't allow you to keep doing this to yourself," I said as I took the empty cans to the kitchen. When I returned and made to cart away the unopened cans of beer, Mom got up and yanked them out of my hands.

"Give me those," she said. She took them back to the bed and opened one of the cans.

I looked at her and my heart filled with pity. I didn't understand what it felt like to love someone so much that even when they didn't love you anymore, your heart still yearned for them.

"You're killing your body with that thing, Mom. Drinking and being sad won't bring Dad back."

Mom shook her head at me as she took another huge gulp from the can.

"You know, Jacqueline, sometimes you seem wiser than your age. But I never understand why you have never missed him or wanted to talk about him."

"Why would I want to talk about someone who doesn't want to be in my life anymore?" I shrugged. "Father made his decision when he walked out of our lives. I don't live in misery simply because he's no longer here. And I think you should take a cue from me too."

I stood up, not waiting to hear anything else Mother had to say. I made my way to the kitchen, fatigue clinging to me like a glove.

I started with the dirty dishes in the sink, loading them into the dishwasher and getting started with dinner.

A few seconds later, the enticing smell of lasagna pulled Mom out of her bedroom, and she came to stand at the kitchen door, watching me with a look of fondness.

"You know, I'm so glad I birthed a daughter like you."

I turned and flashed her an understanding smile.

"Pull up a chair. Dinner will be ready soon."

Quietly, she pulled up a chair and sat. I served us dinner. We ate in silence. Mom picked at her meal and kept staring into the distance.

This was a yearly ritual for her. This was the only day she allowed herself to fall completely apart. I wasn't going to blame her or make her feel bad for grieving.

Father had left us seven years ago today. She wasn't weak for showing her vulnerability, but she needed to stop the alcohol.

"How was school today?" she asked.

"It was great," I lied, suddenly finding the plate in front of me very interesting to look at.

"Jacqueline? Is there something you're not telling me?" she asked in a soft tone of voice.

"Everything is fine, Mom."

"How about classes? Is there any subject you're having a tough time with?"

"No, ma'am," I muttered as I continued to eat.

"You don't look very okay," she said after a full minute of studying me.

"Everything is fine, Mom. You should eat more. You haven't had anything since morning."

"You should learn to open up more. It wouldn't hurt to confide in me for a change."

I shook my head from side to side as I suddenly recalled the rollercoaster my life had become.

Sammy had cheated on me with my supposed best friend, who had betrayed me. I had kissed a total stranger just to get back at them. And then, the said stranger had turned out to be my lecturer. Didn't the universe just hate me?

"How about Sammy?" Mom finally asked, as if she could sense that there was fire on the mountain.

"He's fine, Mom."

"Well, I've not seen him around for a while," she said in a low tone of voice, daring me to lie again.

But I couldn't tell her the truth—not today. She was going to be even more sad, and she would drown herself in alcohol even more.

"We've been busy with studies. He just hasn't had time to visit," I answered without looking at Mom.

"I know you're lying," Mom said in a gentle, understanding voice. "And I don't know why you would do that. But I think I'll be patient. I'll wait until you're ready to tell me what's going on."

I looked up at her then and saw nothing but understanding in her eyes.

"Thanks, Mom."

"It's okay," she said with a smile. "Now eat up." She gestured at my plate and began to wolf down her food.

And just like that, she was back to herself again. But next year, she was going to fall down this rabbit hole, and like always, I wasn't going to be able to do anything about it.

EZRAThe weight of the court doors echoed behind me as I stepped into the outer corridor, the cold air tugging at the back of my neck.I was dressed in a black cloak that swept the cold floor of the corridor. After years of wearing shirts, cottons, and suits, I found this oddly discomforting. It was going to take a while to get used to these heavy fabrics again.I turned down the hall that led to the main court, each step slow but deliberate. The scent of torch smoke clung to the ceiling. The walls were carved in dark stone, etched with symbols older than the kingdom itself. As I reached the throne room, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around just in time to see Tarius slip through the door.He was wearing a cloak almost identical to mine, and he looked very comfortable in it.“Good morning, Alpha. Did you sleep well?”I gave a low nod without taking my eyes off him.“I slept very well, Tarius,” I finally answered.“Alpha,” he said, bowing his head deeply. “Forgive me. There sho

JACQUELINE“Gone for good?” I repeated, blinking at my mom like she’d grown a second head. She nodded slowly, grabbing her spoon and beginning to dig into her plate of lasagna. She was acting perfectly calm. But why wouldn’t she?She wasn’t the one who’d signed up for his classes. She wasn’t the one who had kissed him at Sammy’s party just to get back at her cheating ex. She wasn’t the one who’d fallen in love with him and was now learning that he probably was never going to come back.“What do you mean gone for good? Did he tell you that? Did Ezra say something?” Surely, he must have said something.Had his visit that night really been for me? Would he have told me he was leaving if I’d just driven straight home after our sexual encounter? She hesitated. “Well... not exactly. He didn’t say the words gone for good. But when someone shows up at your door, drops off their cat, and hands you their platinum card like it’s a spare pair of socks, it says something.”My head jerked up. “Wai

EZRAI moved to the window where Araya had stood and took in the houses littered across the streets of Grim. And for a moment, I almost believed that if I stared out into the distance hard enough, I’d be able to tell what she had been thinking. I’d be able to gauge what the fuck was going on.But my thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock.“Come in,” I called out.The door creaked open, and a woman stepped in. It was the maid from yesterday—the one who had brought food and had eyes the color that reminded me of the human girl's.Her head was bowed low, and she had a folded towel over her arm. Her voice, when she spoke, was steady.“I’ve come to draw your bath, Alpha.”I said nothing. My gaze remained fixed on the distance. With my growing distrust, I wasn’t even sure it was safe to bathe here. But I’d been out hunting and needed to clean myself of the scent of blood that I was certain still clung to my skin.“The water will be ready shortly.”She turned and disappeared into the ba

JACQUELINEI wasn't sure how long I slept, but I roused the second I felt something soft across my cheeks.I could tell that I was being touched, but the sleepy fog hadn't completely cleared for me to be able to tell by whom. But the moment the familiar smell of lavender hit, I slowly cracked one eye open and stared up at the sight of my mom gently stroking my cheek with her right thumb. Her eyes were filled with insurmountable fondness."Mom?" I whispered. She had loved to sit by my bedside and stroke my cheeks when I was younger. But that had stopped the moment Father had upped and left home without looking back."Yes, my darling," she replied with a tired smile. She didn't shift away, but she retracted her hand, and I instantly missed the warmth of her touch.I blinked slowly. She was still in the outfit she wore this morning. Her shoes had been kicked off. Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, a few strands falling over her cheeks. She had just returned from work. "You're back ea

JACQUELINEMy room smelled like the hair cream and shampoo I'd used this morning. I moved towards the window and pushed it open, letting in a soft breeze that rustled the edges of my curtains. Then, I went to the bathroom and removed my makeup. I had been so ready for Ezra to see my at my best today. I looked at my reflection in my broken bathroom mirror and sighed. I went back to the bedroom after my face was completely free of makeup and took of my clothes, grabbing an old tee and shorts and putting them on. The cat bag curled itself on my trading desk and was watching my every move. It was a funny feeling to have an audience that appeared to be so intrigued by my presence. I crawled into bed without bothering to pull down the blanket and the cat jumped down from the desk, her soft purrs vibrated through the mattress, as she joined me. She took up residence right beside my hip, her little chin tucked against her paw, tail wrapped around her body.I reached over and stroked her

JACQUELINEI stepped up onto the porch as Blair turned the corner, and the orange tabby cat stood. Without a single sound, she strutted away, tail flicking like she had a personal vendetta against me. I paused, one foot still hovering above the last step, watching her move toward the far side of the house like I was the one trespassing. How the hell had she even gotten outside?"Come here," I called softly. "How did you get out?"The cat paused, turned, and eyed me with what I swore was judgment. Then she meowed, loud, high-pitched, a sound that carried more insult than request. Then she turned again and walked farther. The darn cat was just as saucy as its owner.I shook my head, lips pulling into a small smirk despite the slight disdain I held toward Ezra.“Come on, let's get inside.”Of course, she wouldn’t answer. She was a cat, not a child. There was no point in being upset at her. She hadn’t asked to be dumped here. She hadn’t hurt me.Ezra had.I exhaled and reached for the doo
