JACQUELINE

How dare he advise that I dump my precious Chirpy? This car meant the world to me, and I wasn't going to ditch it for any reason.

Plus, it was still in good enough condition and practical to drive.

I parked in the driveway and got out of the car, locking it and giving it a soft pat before stepping into the house.

"Mom! I'm home," I yelled as I hung my car key and made my way to the kitchen. But I found no one there.

Hungry, I searched around for something to eat but only found a half-eaten peanut butter sandwich that was almost stale.

I sighed softly and made my way up the stairs. I knocked softly on Mom's door and opened it.

"Mom," I muttered as I stepped further into the room.

I found her sprawled on the bed, a picture of Father right beside her.

"Mom," I repeated as I stepped around the open cans of alcohol.

Mom refused to acknowledge me, and my heart broke as I watched a single tear roll down her cheek.

"You've forgotten what today is," she said.

"No, I have not," I responded firmly. "Today is the day Dad left us. It's the anniversary, but you cannot continue to do this, Mom. He has moved on. You have to learn to do so too."

Mom turned her head and looked at me. Her eyes were bloodshot, as if she'd been crying and drinking all day.

Swiftly, I stood up and began to pack the empty cans of drinks.

"I can't allow you to keep doing this to yourself," I said as I took the empty cans to the kitchen. When I returned and made to cart away the unopened cans of beer, Mom got up and yanked them out of my hands.

"Give me those," she said. She took them back to the bed and opened one of the cans.

I looked at her and my heart filled with pity. I didn't understand what it felt like to love someone so much that even when they didn't love you anymore, your heart still yearned for them.

"You're killing your body with that thing, Mom. Drinking and being sad won't bring Dad back."

Mom shook her head at me as she took another huge gulp from the can.

"You know, Jacqueline, sometimes you seem wiser than your age. But I never understand why you have never missed him or wanted to talk about him."

"Why would I want to talk about someone who doesn't want to be in my life anymore?" I shrugged. "Father made his decision when he walked out of our lives. I don't live in misery simply because he's no longer here. And I think you should take a cue from me too."

I stood up, not waiting to hear anything else Mother had to say. I made my way to the kitchen, fatigue clinging to me like a glove.

I started with the dirty dishes in the sink, loading them into the dishwasher and getting started with dinner.

A few seconds later, the enticing smell of lasagna pulled Mom out of her bedroom, and she came to stand at the kitchen door, watching me with a look of fondness.

"You know, I'm so glad I birthed a daughter like you."

I turned and flashed her an understanding smile.

"Pull up a chair. Dinner will be ready soon."

Quietly, she pulled up a chair and sat. I served us dinner. We ate in silence. Mom picked at her meal and kept staring into the distance.

This was a yearly ritual for her. This was the only day she allowed herself to fall completely apart. I wasn't going to blame her or make her feel bad for grieving.

Father had left us seven years ago today. She wasn't weak for showing her vulnerability, but she needed to stop the alcohol.

"How was school today?" she asked.

"It was great," I lied, suddenly finding the plate in front of me very interesting to look at.

"Jacqueline? Is there something you're not telling me?" she asked in a soft tone of voice.

"Everything is fine, Mom."

"How about classes? Is there any subject you're having a tough time with?"

"No, ma'am," I muttered as I continued to eat.

"You don't look very okay," she said after a full minute of studying me.

"Everything is fine, Mom. You should eat more. You haven't had anything since morning."

"You should learn to open up more. It wouldn't hurt to confide in me for a change."

I shook my head from side to side as I suddenly recalled the rollercoaster my life had become.

Sammy had cheated on me with my supposed best friend, who had betrayed me. I had kissed a total stranger just to get back at them. And then, the said stranger had turned out to be my lecturer. Didn't the universe just hate me?

"How about Sammy?" Mom finally asked, as if she could sense that there was fire on the mountain.

"He's fine, Mom."

"Well, I've not seen him around for a while," she said in a low tone of voice, daring me to lie again.

But I couldn't tell her the truth—not today. She was going to be even more sad, and she would drown herself in alcohol even more.

"We've been busy with studies. He just hasn't had time to visit," I answered without looking at Mom.

"I know you're lying," Mom said in a gentle, understanding voice. "And I don't know why you would do that. But I think I'll be patient. I'll wait until you're ready to tell me what's going on."

I looked up at her then and saw nothing but understanding in her eyes.

"Thanks, Mom."

"It's okay," she said with a smile. "Now eat up." She gestured at my plate and began to wolf down her food.

And just like that, she was back to herself again. But next year, she was going to fall down this rabbit hole, and like always, I wasn't going to be able to do anything about it.

EZRABeatrice was late.I could already hear the excuses she would try to string together—probably some nonsense about the bus or forgetting her phone. If she even showed up at all.But just as the sun broke through the clouds, she appeared.Jogging toward me in ripped leggings and a faded hoodie, hair tied in a hasty knot and eyes already apologetic.“Twelve minutes late,” I said flatly.“Sorry,” she breathed, doubling over and resting her hands on her knees. “My alarm—”“I don’t care,” I snapped. “There won’t be any leniency in this. You want to survive, you show up. Or die trying.”She swallowed hard and straightened up, nodding silently.I gestured toward the forest behind me. “This is where you’ll train. But before we start, we talk. I need to know how this started. The truth. No bullshit.”Beatrice looked away, jaw clenched. Her fingers twitched at her sides, nails already pressing against her palms as if the memory alone was enough to stir her wolf.I stepped closer, voice low.

JACQUELINEHe was a man, this stranger I'd just ran straight into. He was dressed like every normal man, in a flannel shirt and faded jeans. His hair was brown and cut short, his eyes matched the colour of his hair—a dull brown. But murderers and rapists all looked normal, until they found a helpless woman to prey on. The moment our eyes met, I turned on my heel and bolted.I should’ve known something was off the second I heard that howl echoing through the trees like some paranormal shit. I’d driven here to find solace, but it'll seem all I'd found was trouble. Sweat slicked my palms and my heart threatened to rip through my chest. I got up and ran. “Wait!” a voice called out, low and urgent. “Stop!”Fear poured through me hotter than July. I stumbled, nearly tripped, and then found a clearing, a tiny patch of open sky where I’d parked. Relief slammed into me. I burst through the trees, skidded across the grass, and dove into my car.I slammed the door, locked it, and shoved the

EZRAThe chair was still empty five minutes after the class had begun. I stared at it longer than I meant to, my chalk hovering just above the whiteboard. Jacqueline Blackwell’s absence shouldn’t have mattered. Students skipped class all the time, especially ones who were already failing. But that didn’t explain the uncomfortable weight in my chest. Or the clenching in my jaw.She was supposed to be here. Jacqueline. I turned away from the empty seat and addressed the rest of the class, ignoring the restless shifting of their bodies and the open boredom on some of their faces. Humans were so easily distracted. Their attention spans are weaker than I remembered.“Can anyone walk me through the primary frameworks of literary nihilism?” I asked flatly.A hand rose hesitantly.I let the student answer, barely listening, nodding when they finished. “Right. That’ll do.”I turned back to the board and resumed writing, but my strokes were sharper, less controlled. Why hadn’t she come? Was s

JACQUELINEI didn't get out of bed the next morning. Not after last night. Not after what happened in my own living room, against my own wall—with my professor, Mr Philips.I had woken up feeling raw, restless, like my skin didn’t quite fit anymore. My alarm blared at eight, but I’d silenced it with a shaky hand and rolled onto my side, staring at the cracks on the wall instead. My heart beat fast and slow all at once, my body tense like it was waiting for something.Every time I blinked, I saw him—Mr. Philips. His gray eyes. His commanding voice. The weight of his hands on my hips. The low growl in his throat as he told me I needed to learn. When a knock sounded on my door, I struggled to get my head off my pillow. Good morning, honey. I heard my mom's voice. “Mom.” I muttered. “What time did you come back? She stepped fully into the room, looking tired as usual. “I got in just now. How did last night go?” She asked, and for some reason, I blushed a bright red at the question. “L

  • The Alpha King's Human Mate    Chapter 27

JACQUELINEWhat the fuck just happened?I stood in the living room, heart pounding like a war drum, my breath shaky and uneven. The door had clicked shut behind Mr. Philips, and yet the tension he left behind hung in the air, thick and electric. My ass was stinging. Actually stinging. The kind of pain that wasn’t just pain—it was something else. My skin tingled as if it wasn’t mine, and heat had started to pool low in my stomach, threading down between my legs with every breath I took. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to ground myself, but all I could feel was the wild rhythm of my heart, the tremble of my limbs. What had I gotten myself into?I had kissed a stranger at my ex’s birthday party. That’s where it started, right? A bold, careless, wild decision. A kiss that was supposed to mean nothing. I’d kissed him to get back at Sammy, not knowing he would walk into my lecture hall the very next week as my professor. And now… now he had spanked me in my own home and left me standin

EZRA As soon as Juliet walked out the door, I dropped the fork and leaned back, tired of pretending that I liked human food. “I knew it!” Jacqueline said as her sharp blue eyes met mine. “I knew you didn't like the meal. You just like to pretend around my mother.”“And you have a funny way of showing your mom that you appreciate all her hard work.”Anger clouded her features. “What do you mean?” “How are you preparing for the preliminary assessment on Monday?” She looked quickly away. “That's none of your business.”“That's a really dumb thing to say, Jacqueline. Your performance in my class is every bit my business. But your academics do not look like they mean serious business to you.”“My academics are fucking serious business to me.” She said, eyes glaring into mine. In two seconds, I was out of my chair and had her front pressed against the wall, my hands on her nape.I tilted my head until I met her eyes—wide with fear, and I got a strong sense of déjà vu. And then, the mem
