Chapter 5: The Consort Is Dead

I woke up to the taste of metal and the wrong ceiling.

My tongue felt thick. My arms were slow to answer. For a few seconds I only knew that the cot under me was not my cot and the air smelled of cold stone and something sweet that did not belong in any storage room or sleeping quarters I knew.

I turned my head.

The movement sent a dull pulse through my skull. I was lying on a low padded bench against a wall. Heavy curtains blocked most of the light. Across from me a wide bed sat in disarray, covers thrown back, pillows on the floor. A woman's arm hung off the far side of the mattress, fingers curled and still.

I knew that arm.

Recognition came in a sick rush. The body was of Pernilla Claesson. The Alpha King's consort. The woman the entire Crownlands had been watching for months because she finally carried the child everyone said would secure the succession.

I pushed myself up on one elbow. The room tilted. My stomach lurched. I swallowed hard and forced my legs over the side of the bench. My bare feet touched a rug that felt expensive even through the numbness.

There was blood on the floor near the bed.

Not a lot at first glance. Then I saw the rest. Dark spread under the edge of the mattress. More on the sheets where her body lay half turned toward the wall. Her eyes were open. Empty.

I scrambled backward until my shoulders hit the wall.

My hands came up in front of me without thought. There was blood on them too. Under the nails. Across the palms. Smeared along the inside of my wrists like I had tried to wipe them clean and only made it worse.

A sound tried to leave my throat and died there.

I looked around the room in hard, fast glances. My bag was gone. The small knife was gone. The clothes I was wearing were not the ones I had packed in. These were softer, finer, and already marked with the same dark stains that covered my hands.

Someone had moved me here while I was under the drug.

Someone had put me in this room with a dead woman and left my hands looking like I had done the killing.

Voices rose in the corridor outside. Sharp. Urgent. A man's voice I did not know shouted for the guard. Another answered. Footsteps gathered fast.

I tried to stand. My legs folded. I caught myself on the edge of the bench and stayed there, breathing too hard, staring at Pernilla's still face while the truth arranged itself with ugly clarity.

Jörgen and Yvonne had not only stopped me from leaving.

They had built a frame so complete that no one would ever believe I simply wanted to walk away.

The door slammed open.

Light from the corridor cut across the room. Two guards came in first, blades already drawn. Behind them a man in dark formal clothes stopped dead at the sight of the bed. His face went white. Then he looked at me, still half on the floor with blood on my hands and the dead consort only a few steps away.

"Do not move," the first guard said.

I could not have moved if I wanted to. My body was locked.

More people filled the doorway. Someone started shouting for the King. Someone else ordered the wing sealed. A woman near the back made a broken sound when she saw the bed.

I kept my eyes on Pernilla's face because looking at the living people felt worse.

One of the guards stepped closer, careful, the way you approach a dangerous animal. He saw the blood on my hands and the state of the room and reached his own conclusion without asking a single question.

"On the ground," he ordered. "Now!"

I lowered myself the rest of the way. The rug pressed against my cheek. The smell of blood and the sweet drug still coating my mouth mixed until my stomach turned again.

Boots stopped near my head. A new voice spoke, colder than the others.

"Is she alive?"

"The consort is dead, my lord. The woman was found with her."

A pause. Then the same cold voice.

"Secure her. No one speaks to her until the King arrives."

Hard hands pulled my arms behind my back. Something metal closed around my wrists. I did not resist. There was nothing left to resist with.

As they hauled me up I caught one last look at the bed.

Pernilla's open eyes stared at nothing. The future the Crownlands had pinned on her child stared at nothing with her.

And every person in that doorway already believed they were looking at the woman who had ended both.

The consequence arrived before midday, and it did not come gently. I had been standing at the window with the narrow strip of open air on my face when the lock turned hard. Not the careful sound of medical staff or the single guard with a tray. Multiple boots. The door opened and two guards entered first, then a man in the dark insignia of the investigative office. Behind him came the formal-dressed official from the original interrogation. Their faces carried none of the flat routine I had gotten used to. "Maria Jonsson," the investigator said. "You will come with us." "Where?" "A review of specific claims you made regarding the sedative evidence. The request was logged. It is being addressed." My stomach tightened. I had pushed the timeline problem at Oliver the night before. Someone had decided it could not be left alone. Whether that was protection or a setup to shut me down permanently, I could not yet tell. They did not restrain me. The contract made open force unnecessar

She tried to keep her voice steady. "The halted execution and the contract were formally acknowledged. Several members expressed concern that the King is elevating a convicted murderer above the memory of his consort. One suggested that any child produced under these conditions would carry the taint of the crime. Another suggested the contract should be supervised by a fuller medical and legal panel to ensure the Crown is not being manipulated.""And you came to tell me this out of kindness.""I came to tell you that your position is not as secure as the locked door might make it feel. Practical arrangements can be revised. Public pressure has weight even on a King." She tilted her head. "You should also know that your former pack has been very cooperative in supplying character statements. They paint a consistent picture. Unstable. Resentful. Isolated. It will be difficult for anyone to argue that the judgment was rushed."She left before I could answer. The perfume trailed after her

"They are using statements from Lindholm. Character assessments. The same story Jörgen and Yvonne built." Oliver's eyes narrowed a fraction. "Your former pack's statements were part of the original record. They remain part of the record. Unless you have new evidence that changes the facts of the consort's death, they are irrelevant to the terms under which you are still breathing." I held his gaze. "There is a problem with the sedative timeline. The same compound was in my system and in the chamber. No one has properly separated when it entered my blood from when the consort died. If I was already unconscious when I was moved, the official version that I used it to overpower her does not hold." Silence settled. Oliver studied me for a long moment. The calculation behind his eyes was open enough that I could see him turning the detail over. "You are not an investigator," he said. "You are the contracted party in a breeding agreement. The question of the consort's death is being ha

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the observation fittings in the corners. Somewhere the numbers from my body were being added to a file that decided whether I remained useful. A tray arrived. I ate. The guard took it away. The quiet returned. I used the quiet. The contract kept me alive, but it did not require me to stop thinking. I went back over every piece of the official story I had heard in the judgment chamber and in the interrogation room. The sedative in my blood and in the consort's chamber. My scent throughout the room. The statements from Jörgen and Yvonne placing themselves in the main hall with witnesses. The claim that I had been unstable and resentful. One detail sat wrong. The sedative. The physician who had examined me in the cell had mentioned residue in a cup on the side table in the consort's chamber. The same sedative that had been forced into me in my own room. If Jörgen and Yvonne had drugged me there, and if they had then moved me while I was unc

I stayed on my back and stared at the ceiling while the evidence of what had just happened leaked onto my thighs. Oliver sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me and reached for his clothing. He dressed with the same efficiency as before. When he stood he looked down at me once. "The physician will check you in the morning," he said. "You will report any unusual pain or bleeding. Meals and schedule continue as established. Do not leave the wing." He walked to the door. I pushed myself up on my elbows. My voice came out scraped. "Is that the full extent of the first attempt? No words. No acknowledgment. Just the act and the exit?" He paused with his hand on the door. "The contract requires a viable attempt," he said. "It does not require conversation. You are alive. That is the acknowledgment." He left. The lock turned. I sat in the half-dark with his seed still inside me and the marks of his hands forming on my hip and wrist. The observation fittings watched from t

The afternoon tests were worse than the morning ones. They took more blood. Measured things I did not understand. The older medical woman pressed fingers along the inside of my wrists and the sides of my neck, checking responses I could not feel. The younger one recorded everything in the same flat tone, as if I were a set of numbers that had not yet decided whether they would be useful. When they finished they left without explanation. The lock turned. The observation fittings in the corners stayed dark and watchful.I washed the puncture marks in the bathing room and stared at my face in the small mirror. I looked like someone who had already been worn down and then told to keep standing. The cut on my palm had closed enough to itch. I left it alone.Evening came slowly. The light through the high window thinned. A tray arrived. I ate what I could. The guard took it away. The corridor outside went quieter as the palace shifted into its night rhythm.I sat on the edge of the bed an
