The doors open, and I step into the room. The first thing I see is his broad back as he stands facing away from me.
He turns at the sound of the doors, and our eyes meet.
He's gorgeous. He's always been- dark hair falling to his shoulders, perfectly tousled. His jaw is strong and sharply defined, his nose straight, his features almost too perfectly sculpted. He is tall and broad-shouldered, and even beneath the immaculate tailoring of his clothes, there is no hiding the strength of his body.
He has always carried himself like this. With an effortless authority that makes people straighten their backs and lower their voices without even realizing it. The presence of a powerful Alpha filling the room before he has even spoken a word.
He is, without question, a beautiful man.
Once, I thought that beauty belonged to me.
How foolish I was.
In my previous life, he never came to see me that morning- I never gave him the chance. The moment I had woken up, I rushed to find him, barely caring how I looked and definitely without an ounce of care for what anyone else thought. All I cared about was that he had brought in another woman. I had gone mad with jealousy.
I’d thrown an inkwell at his head and made a huge scene. Not only did I attack the King but I’d even threatened to kill myself- and him- if he didn’t send the new Companion away. And then proceeded to publicly call the Viscount’s daughter words that no polite lady should utter.
He had been furious and had responded by ordering me confined to my palace for two months.
The humiliation had lasted far longer.
The servants had whispered about me. The courtiers had laughed. Even ministers who should have shown their Queen proper respect had sneered whenever they saw me. I was the shame of nobility. In days, word spread throughout the entire Kingdom. From then on, I had been the subject of gossip and ridicule, the pathetic Queen whom the King had been tolerating had finally lost all favour.
By then, it had become obvious to everyone.
Cassius truly did not love me. He did not even like me. I had simply been too foolish to see what everyone else had apparently known for years.
That incident had finally cemented my place in the eyes of the kingdom. The King disliked the Queen, and the Queen was desperate for his attention. I was nothing.
Thankfully, this time I had not made the same mistake. Thankfully, I arrived just before I could rush after him and humiliate myself all over again.
And now he has come to me.
Of course he has.
The ‘ever-kind and wise King Cassius’ could hardly do otherwise. He is nothing if not courteous and proper, and a Queen who has nearly drowned is certainly deserving of a visit from her husband.
Courtesy demands it.
His expression softens, and a smile spreads across his face. He opens his arms wide.
I stare at him for the briefest moment. He is expecting me to run into them- just as I always did.
This time, I do not.
Instead, I dip into a proper curtsy, deliberately pretending not to see.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.” I say, in as even a tone as I can.
For a heartbeat, he remains like that. Then his arms slowly lower, and he clasps his hands behind his back. There's the faintest tightness at the corner of his mouth, there and then gone.
“Good morning, Serena,” his voice is gentle. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“I am quite well.”
His gaze moves over me, his eyes flashing with surprise at my different attire. "This is different. You look lovely."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," I say.
"The colour suits you."
I only smile again, and say to the servants trailing behind me. “Have some refreshments brought in.” moving deeper into the room.
The servants immediately move to obey.
My private sitting room is moderately sized compared to the other entertaining rooms in the palace. However, there is nothing modest about its furnishings. Everything in it is expensive and befitting of the Royal family. But unlike the grander rooms of the palace, this one feels warm and lived-in. A thick rug covers most of the stone floor, keeping out the winter chill, while a fire burns steadily in the hearth. Comfortable upholstered chairs surround a low table near the windows, and heavy curtains frame the tall glass panes. Several vases of flowers are scattered throughout the room, though the cold weather has already begun to take its toll on them.
I move toward one of the chairs in the middle of the room and take a seat- I intentionally choose a single-seater. Cassius settles on the sofa opposite me.
The servants are efficient. Within minutes, tea and refreshments are arranged before us. Cordelia steps forward and pours the tea into our cups before retreating with the other servants to the corners of the room. They maintain the proper distance expected of royal attendants, far enough to grant us privacy but close enough to respond immediately should either of us need anything.
I lift my cup.
Across from me, Cassius does the same.
His gaze moves over me, concern on his face. "I heard you fell into the pond. Are you hurt?" he asks, “How did that happen?”
I shake my head lightly and take a sip of my tea. "I tripped on my dress. It was nothing- a moment of carelessness on my part."
His frown deepens. “But it’s winter. The water must have been freezing.”
I nod.
It was.
“I had a hot bath afterwards.” I inform him, “I was otherwise unhurt.”
"Has the physician seen to you?"
"It wasn't necessary."
His eyes melt with gentle concern. "Serena, I'd feel better if he did."
I open my mouth to refuse again, then think better of it and simply incline my head. "As you wish." I take another sip of tea instead of arguing further.
His expression eases at my agreement and glances toward the servants. "One of you, go summon the court physician to examine the Queen."
"Yes, Your Majesty," they answer almost in unison before one of them moves to carry out the order.
Serena He closes the distance between us and pulls me into an embrace. I stay rigid in his arms. He pulls back after a moment, his hands coming up to cup my face, tilting it toward his. His gaze drops to my mouth. The realization of what he wants to do hits me. Here, in my father’s house, with my family just beyond that door- and I suddenly feel sick. I turn my head at the last second and his lips land against my cheek instead of my mouth. I bring my hands up to his chest and push him back. He’s too stunned by the rejection to hold on, and I slip free easily, putting another step of distance between us before angling my body away entirely. “So its as I said. You’re really angry with me.” he with a smile. I look away. After a pause, then. “Fine. Stay here a few days. Spend time with your family and cool down.” His tone cools further. “But I expect this- whatever this is- to be over by the time you return.” He doesn’t linger after that. He tells me he’ll come back for me in two d
Serena “Your Majesty is being far too gracious, but there’s no need to say more.” Father clasps his hands and inclines his head with careful formality. “It really is this old man’s failure to raise his daughter properly. She has brought shame upon the royal household. Now that she’s home, I’ll see to it she’s disciplined properly. As everyone says, she is incompatible with the title of Queen.” On the surface, his words are disparaging to me. But you can tell that he’s really saying: since you feel my daughter is unsuitable and are dissatisfied with her. You should give her back. Heat burns the back of my eyes and I feel a lump in my throat. If anyone were to ask me what exactly I’d done to bring shame upon myself, it would simply be that I loved Cassius too much. I abandoned myself for him, in spite of the fact that he never gave me anything in return. I lower my lashes and press my lips together, saying nothing. So this is what it feels like to stand back and bask in my fathe
Serena I have not been here in so long. We slowly cross the courtyard and enter the great stone mansion. The interior is just as I remember it too. It is massive and sturdy with sparse decoration. There are no excessive ornaments or delicate furnishings- at a glance, it can be seen that everything is practical and built to last. One look is enough to tell anyone what sort of people live here- a military family. And yet somehow, despite its imposing appearance, the estate has always felt warm. It is home. We are soon settled in the main sitting room, and servants bring refreshments and steaming cups of tea. Logan looks at me with warm eyes. “You should drink that quickly,” he says. “It will help chase away the cold.” I take a sip. The tea warming not just my body but my heart. Father wastes no time. With his face set in a terrifying scowl, “I hear His Majesty has taken another woman into his household,” he says, his voice carrying none of the deference one would expect him to
Serena When we step out of the pavilion, I find that my three maids are waiting for us along with Killian. The moment they see us, the Rosalyn, Marisol and Kara curtsy, while Killian straightens and bows deeply. “Your Majesty.” They call. Cassius gives them a curt nod and says to my maids, “We will be setting out for the General’s Estate now. Follow in the carriage behind ours.” “Yes, Your Majesty.” They curtsy again. Cassius then turns to me and smiles softly, saying, “We should get going. Let’s not keep them waiting any longer.” “Alright.” I nod. He then strides away. My brows furrow in confusion. His gaze did not even pause on Killian even once. I’ve never seen him be that rude before. Aside from that one incident in our past life, Cassius has always been perfectly polite to him. In fact, Cassius is polite to everyone. He is known for being a gentle and magnanimous King. Unlike other nobles, he has never been known to be haughty. Killian remains where he is, his express
Serena I used to feel that Cassius had a thousand layers around him and I was desperate to strip them away, one by one, to reach the true him underneath. But no matter how hard I tried, I was never able to. So I simply kept going. Chasing. Searching and groping in the dark. Never able to stop. Thinking about it now, I had been trying far too hard. I had given far too much in exchange for the smallest response. Cassius next raises his hand and removes the warm earmuffs from my head. I quietly look at him. “Are you not going to say anything to me?” He asks. His fingers brush against my ears before his brows draw together. “It’s cold.” His hands are large enough to cover both my ears completely. Perhaps because I was pulling Marisol around on the ice just now, my skin is still flushed with warmth. I am somewhat perplexed, but I say nothing. Cassius quickly produces another pair of earmuffs and puts them on me himself. “There. That’s better.” I remain silent.
Serena I had already expected all of this. My reputation has been ruined for years. Those who dislike me will never miss the opportunity to speak of how difficult, jealous, and unsuitable I am. And those who admire Cassius would be more even more passionate. As for those who might have defended me? Well… there is none. Apart from my family, no one loves me enough to care what has been said about me, so there has never been anyone willing to step forward and suppress the gossip on my behalf. “Your Majesty…” “Miss…” My handmaidens whisper worriedly, all three looking at me with concerned eyes. My expression however, is completely unconcerned. I remember my brother’s words, “If Cassius truly loved you, he would never let rumors spread about you…” True. If the King forbade servants from gossiping. No one would dare to. After all, not only is he King. He is also their Alpha. Then suddenly, something warm covers my ears. I am taken aback for a moment. My hands reach up
