THALIRA

I sneaked back through the back gate, praying to the moon Goddess that no one would see me coming in.

Slowly, I pushed the back door open and stepped into the house, my heart beating fast against my chest; it was thundering so loud, someone close could hear it.

I slipped off my shoes by the door and slid my feet into a pair of house slippers.

The packhouse was usually quiet. Mom and Dad must have gone out, and Lora.... oh well.

As I walked toward the hallway, movement in the living room

THALIRA I stood outside the Packhouse for over thirty minutes. My hand tightened around the strap of my bag, and I gulped down the heavy knot in my throat. The doctor's words stuck to my head all the time.I shut my eyes and sighed.Maybe Dad isn't around yet. I glanced to the side; his favorite Range Rover was nowhere in sight, and I drew in a shaky breath and nodded my head. Maybe Dr Evelyn had chosen her words carefully. The tiny spark of hope was enough to push my feet forward. I climbed the marble stairs, one at a time. The closer I got to the front door, the louder my heart pounded against my ears."You can do this," I muttered to myself and reached for the brass handle. I tried to turn it; my fingers remained frozen around it. I couldn't.My palms were damp with sweat.I wiped my palms on my dress and closed my eyes, then took a long, steady breath. Then I pushed the door open."You're finally back." His voice stopped me dead in my tracks. Dad.I slowly raised my head, my h

Instinctively, I adjusted my shawl, pulling it higher over the still fresh scar on my face.A slow smile spread across her lips as she watched me, her legs dangling over the couch."You're healing just fine," She shook her head with a soft chuckle before returning her attention to the

THALIRA The nausea came again before I could even reach the sink.My body trembled violently as I gripped the edge of the toilet bowl, my body shaking and breath uneven as everything inside my stomach poured back into the toilet. What was wrong with me?I was still ruminating about what the issue could be when a sharp knock landed on the door, and my heart skipped.Oh Moon Goddess, they're here. What do I say?"Thalira?" Mother's voice called from the other side. "Are you alright?"I quickly pushed myself up from the floor, flushed the toilet without daring to look at it, and rinsed my mouth, forcing myself to sound as normal as possible."I'm fine," I replied calmly."You've been in there for a minute."I bit my trembling lower lip and managed to roll my eyes. Acting like a caring mother just because her subordinates were around."I think....." I swallowed, staring at my pale reflection in the mirror. "Something I ate yesterday must not be for my stomach."There was a brief silence

THALIRA I read the note over and over again, my heart pounding so hard it hurts. "The next time we meet, you'll die"My fingers trembled violently around the paper as I swallowed the heavy lump in my throat. Is this some sick joke or what?I swallowed hard and spun towards the door, scrambling to gather my clothes from the floor. Within seconds, I was done dressing.Clutching my bag against my chest, I hurried to the door and pressed my eyes against the peephole.I let out a harsh breath. The hallway was empty.I slowly turned the handle and slipped out of the suite, pulling the door shut behind me.The hall stretched endlessly before me; everywhere was dead silent except for the distant hum of the elevator.I tightened my bag and hurried toward it, my heartbeat still pounding loudly, refusing to stop. What if someone finds out that I didn't stay in my room last night? The elevator door slid open almost immediately. I stepped inside and jabbed the button for the lobby. We were suppo

Thalira I didn't remember leaving the bonfire. One minute everyone was clapping for Lora and Giovanni like they were some perfectly made lovers blessed by the Moon Goddess herself.Next, I was locked inside my room, trying not to scream into my pillow. It hurts. Everything hurts.I sat curled on the floor beside my bed, my hands trembling, my makeup long ruined and my golden shawl discarded somewhere near the door.No one came after me when I left— not my mother, not even father. They were all enjoying the ceremony, at least, one daughter saved the household.A bitter laugh escaped my lips as I wiped harshly at my tears. My phone buzzed suddenly beside me, but I ignored it.What else could it be? News about Giovanni choosing Lora over me would have spread throughout the city's social networks by now.I stretched my hand towards the phone and grabbed it.My brows furrowed as I stared at the message glowing across my phone screen.*Dear Miss Thalira Whitmore, you hav
