The water sat completely still. It was not quiet. It was never quiet. But still, like glass pulled tight over some kind of heartbeat.

Selene pushed ahead. The surface bent under her hands. The river turned into a hallway now. Its walls looked see-through. They pulsed with a faint light. That light was not really light. It was more like the beat of her own blood.

The air carried a smell of iron and damp stone. Every noise she made echoed back all wrong. A footstep turned into a soft whisper. Her breath came out as a sigh. But that sigh did not feel like hers at all.

Keep moving. She told herself that. But the voice sounded like it came from behind her.

She turned around. Aurek was there. Or some version of him anyway. The silver in his eyes seemed bruised. It looked darker than she remembered. His mouth formed her name. She reached out for him. He broke apart into ripples. The hallway pulled itself back together. It got narrower this time. The walls throbbed like veins squeezing shut a

The palace hallways smelled like old wax and secrets, a heavy smell that made it hard to breathe. I stuck to the walls, quiet as a mouse, my inner wolf all coiled up, jumpy and ready. Every gut feeling screamed danger. I could sense it before I saw anything – a little shiver in the air, a change in the mood, like the shadows themselves were alive, twisting around like they were watching.Maris walked ahead, her soft footsteps barely making a sound on the shiny stone floor. She had no clue I was behind her, following her every move like a hawk. The moonlight came in through the big windows, shining on her dark hair and her sharp cheekbones. Something about the way she moved, the way her fingers curled as she held the candle tray, told me she wasn't just doing her job. Nah. She had a reason for being there. There was a secret in the air.My wolf perked up, sensing something I didn't see: Maris wasn't alone. She whispered to someone I couldn't see, in a language I didn't know, but my wol

Stay close, he whispered, almost growling. It was an order, a lifeline, and a heads-up all in one. I nodded, even though he couldn't see, and pulled my horse beside his. I was terrified, totally helpless, and yet my heart skipped a beat at the sheer force of him – the way he was in control, dangerous, ready to crush whatever was in front of us.The shadow moved again, slow now, like it was playing with us. I could feel the bad vibes coming off it, a cold intelligence that matched Aurek's. My wolf got antsy. I felt a surge of my own fear and – yeah, I'll say it – fascination. This wasn't just about what was out there; it was about what was happening between us, this blurry line between hunter and prey, protector and protected, wanting and surviving.Aurek shifted, reaching for his sword. My breath caught – it was the way his muscles tightened, the hint of violence barely held back. I wanted to tell him to be careful, but I couldn't speak. Instead, my body answered his, mirroring him, e

The wind changed, with a smell that was metal. I got the chills. Was it poison? Or just the panic? Aurek's body was tethered tightly, to protect me. He knew what was out there for us.I wanted to ask, he had it too? Even speaking was a twisted thing of my doubt. I wanted so badly to trust and be trusted. The ambush had been too good, too right. Someone had to know everything. It tightened my chest.I felt his gaze wash over me. And he was reading me. I could feel his emotions rising. I knew that something was fighting for not just my survival, but his too. His wolf was wild and dangerous. It was tearing at his control.A twig snapped. I knew then a hunter was close. Aurek was on guard. I then too couldn’t move. He shifted and rose, made me want to disappear. Our stalkers had found us.I saw the shadows of them cutting through the trees, like water. It made my stomach churn. It wasn't over. I wanted off this freaking set. I just wanted to flee. But knew, I had to say. And he would neve

  • The Alpha King's Shadow   Chapter 28

The night was a living thing, not friendly at all, almost like it was trying to smother me, its whispers warnings I wanted to ignore but couldn't. The road ahead? Pitch black. The trees? Like accusing figures. I gripped the reins, not to boss the horse around, but to feel grounded against the storm brewing inside me. Selene was next to me, quiet and delicate like a candle flame about to be blown out. Yet there was something impossibly bright about her, like the darkness itself knew better than to even try and touch her.Every part of me screamed danger, but not the kind I could beat with a sword. This felt old, nasty. My wolf rumbled deep in my chest, a vibration running through my skeleton. I tasted blood and felt this chill crawl all over my skin. Someone – something – watched us, stalked us, growing fat on Selene’s barely-there panic.I wanted to say something, to tell her to watch out, but the words felt stuck. My hands were shaking, so I made fists. The night had teeth, and I cou

The first thing that hits me is the biting cold. It's not just on my skin; it's sinking into my bones, like a living thing searching of a meal.Falling? I don't remember that.I wake up with my cheek pressed against the muddy ground, and the metallic taste of blood fills my mouth. My ears are ringing so loudly, I can't tell what's real. Maybe something is inside me, scrambling to claw its way out. My vision blurs with dark spots and trails of smoke, then trees towering over me. They resemble broken silhouettes against a very dark sky.Something did happen, that attack! Memories flood me, screams, the of weapons, the cracking of bones, the thud of bodies hitting the ground and claws too. Dark magic filled the air as if poison. Now my heart races.Aurek, I manage to whisper, but it's barely more than a weak, broken sound.I try to push myself up, and waves of sickness roll through me; I blinked and blinked trying to refocus my vision. In the distance, torchlights flicker, moving slowly.

The river, a relentless serpent, had dragged them further than either had imagined. By the time the trees started to thin, offering peeks at the smoke-stained horizon, Selene's muscles screamed in protest. The night air bit with a chill, heavy with the smell of ash, and it filled her lungs with each ragged breath. Each sound, be it the crack of a twig or the distant hoot of an owl, seemed amplified, as if the woods held its breath to listen.Aurek, ever vigilant, forged ahead on a trail that ran along the ridge. His once-white shirt now clung to him, stained dark with soot and river muck. Bathed in the faint light, he looked both man and beast, a blend of wolf and human fused into a wary figure. Selene kept her distance, minding the throbbing pain in her hand near the mark. It burned with a soft heat, in sync with his heartbeat more than her own.As dawn painted the horizon, a watchtower emerged, a wreck of broken stone almost consumed by ivy. It must have held importance with its pos
