The rain in the Silver-Moon Pack didn’t just fall; it mourned. It hammered against the rusted corrugated roof of the pack’s infirmary, a rhythmic, hollow sound that echoed the emptiness in Elara’s stomach. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of damp stone, iron, and the sickly-sweet scent of decay.

Elara knelt on the freezing floor, her knees long ago gone numb. In her arms, her seven-year-old brother, Toby, was a fragile weight of skin and bone. He coughed—a wet, rattling sound that seemed to shake his entire frame—and a thin trail of blood flecked his pale lips.

"Water," he whispered, his eyes fluttering but never quite opening.

Elara reached for the wooden cup beside her, tipped it, and felt her heart sink. Empty. Not a single drop of clean water, and certainly not a drop of the Moon-Flower nectar he needed to survive the lung-rot. As Omegas, they were the bottom of the food chain. In the Silver-Moon Pack, they weren’t people; they were inconveniences.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the infirmary slammed open. The force of the impact sent a shudder through the walls, knocking a layer of dust onto Toby’s blanket. Elara flinched, instinctively curling her body around her brother to shield him.

Alpha Miller stepped into the room. His polished leather boots clicked mockingly against the grime-covered floor. He looked around the room with a disgusted curl of his lip, his gaze finally landing on Elara. Behind him stood two Enforcers, their hulking shadows stretching across the wall like executioners.

"Get up, Elara," Miller barked.

"He’s worse, Uncle," Elara pleaded, her voice cracking. She didn’t move. She couldn’t. "The fever is spreading to his chest. Please, just one vial of the pack’s medicine. I’ll work every shift in the silver mines. I’ll give you my food rations for a year. Just save him."

Miller let out a short, mocking bark of laughter. He stepped forward, the scent of expensive bourbon and tobacco clashing with the rot of the room. He reached down, grabbing Elara by the hair and forcing her to stand. She gasped as her scalp burned, but she didn’t fight back. She couldn’t afford to.

"You have nothing left to give, girl," Miller hissed into her ear. "Your father died owing this pack a debt that your pathetic 'shifts' won’t cover in three lifetimes. But today, you got lucky. Or rather, your brother did."

He threw a heavy scroll onto the bed. The parchment was thick, ivory-colored, and sealed with a blood-red wax crest: Two wolves circling a black sun. Elara’s breath hitched. She knew that mark. Every wolf from the northern wastes to the southern seas knew it. It was the seal of the Royal Lycan Palace. The seal of the Alpha King, Kaelen—the man they called the Black Winter.

"The King needs a surrogate," Miller said, his eyes gleaming with a greedy light. "His Luna is barren, and the Council is demanding an heir. They want a girl of 'pure' Omega blood—low enough to be ignored, but strong enough to survive a Royal pregnancy. I’ve sold your contract to the Royal Steward. You leave within the hour."

"Sold me?" Elara whispered, the word tasting like ash. "I am a member of this pack. You can’t just—"

"I can do whatever I want!" Miller roared, his Alpha aura flaring. The pressure in the room shifted, making Elara’s lungs feel like they were being crushed. "I am the law here. You sign that paper with your blood, or I throw that brat into the forest tonight. Do you think he’ll survive an hour in the cold with those lungs?"

Elara looked down at Toby. He looked so small. He deserved a life beyond these grey walls. She pulled a small silver dagger from Miller's hand and sliced a shallow cut into her thumb. She pressed her bleeding hand onto the scroll. The blood hit the parchment and glowed a haunting, ethereal gold. The magic of the Blood Oath hummed through Elara’s veins, a cold, heavy chain settling around her heart. It was done. She was property.

The journey to the Citadel was a blur. As the carriage passed under the shadow of the massive black gates of the Royal Palace, a strange sensation washed over Elara. It wasn’t the fear she expected. It was a pull. A deep, primal tugging in her chest that made her inner wolf—silent since her parents’ death—suddenly stand up and howl.

Mate.

The word echoed in her mind, loud and terrifying. No. That was impossible. The King was a Royal Lycan... she was just an Omega.

The carriage door was ripped open. "Out! The King does not like to be kept waiting."

Elara was hurried through the halls of obsidian and gold until she was pushed into a massive bedchamber bathed in moonlight. A scent hit her—an intoxicating mix of frozen earth and expensive sandalwood. At the balcony stood a man whose back was broad enough to carry a kingdom. He turned slowly, his silver eyes glowing with a terrifying, ancient power.

He walked toward her, each step sounding like a death knell. He reached out, his large hand gripping her chin to tilt her face up to his. But the moment his bare skin touched hers, a literal spark flew between them. Kaelen’s eyes widened, the silver bleeding into a pitch-black abyss. His nostrils flared as he leaned down, his face inches from her neck.

"You smell like lilies," he rasped, his voice a dangerous growl. "But your soul... your soul tastes like fire."

He gripped her arms, his fingers digging into her skin as his wolf surfaced. "Who sent you? And why," he leaned in closer, his lips brushing her ear, "why does my wolf want to rip the throat out of anyone who dares to touch you?"

Before Elara could answer, a high, mocking voice rang out from the shadows of the room.

"Because, Kaelen," Lady Seraphina stepped into the light, a cruel smile on her face as she held up a piece of paper. "The Silver-Moon pack didn’t send you a surrogate. They sent you a traitor. This girl isn’t just an Omega, Kaelen. She’s the daughter of the man who tried to assassinate your father."

Elara’s heart stopped. The King’s grip turned from a hold into a crush. The silver in his eyes vanished, replaced by a murderous rage.

"Is this true?" he roared, the sound shaking the very glass in the windows. "Are you the blood of my enemy?"

  • The Alpha King’s Surrogate Secret   Chapter 28: The Sunken Throne

The descent into the Sunken Throne felt like a transition into a world where the laws of the physical realm no longer held dominion. The tunnel beneath the Coral-Spine did not lead through stone or soil. It carved a path through a solid wall of pressurized, black water held back by an ancient, shivering magic. Elara felt the weight of the entire Grey Sea pressing against the invisible barriers. The atmosphere was so dense it felt as though she were inhaling liquid mercury. Every movement required a conscious effort of will. Gravity had become a fluid, unreliable thing. Her boots barely touched the path. She floated more than she walked, her white hair fanning out around her head like the tentacles of a deep-sea creature. Kaelen moved beside her with a grim, focused intensity. He had lashed the silver cradle to his chest with heavy iron chains to ensure the twins remained anchored to his strength. His silver eyes scanned the darkness ahead, his black-iron blade unsheathed. The meta

The descent into the bowels of the Coral-Spine felt like stepping into the throat of a dying god. The surface beneath Elara’s boots was not stone. It was a humid, rhythmic membrane that exhaled the scent of sulfur and ancient rot. Every step she took caused the ground to ripple, sending shivers of violet light through the translucent floor. Above them, the ceiling consisted of arched ribs of calcified bone, dripping with a thick, iridescent slime that sizzled when it touched the golden aura surrounding Elara’s skin. Kaelen moved beside her, his human form taut with a predatory tension. The silver cradle remained lashed to his back, though the weight seemed to bother him less than the oppressive atmosphere. He kept his hand on the hilt of his black-iron blade, his eyes scanning the pulsating walls for any sign of the scaled warriors. "The air is thicker here," Kaelen observed. His voice lacked its usual resonance, dampened by the fleshy walls. "It feels as though the ocean is try

The scent of pine and mountain frost vanished, replaced by the heavy, cloying stench of brine and decaying kelp. The Royal Fleet moved across the Grey Sea like a line of ghost ships. Kaelen’s flagship, The Winter’s Breath, led the formation. Its hull was reinforced with the same white-quartz timber that had grown from the ruins of the Earth-Shaker. Every wave that crashed against the bow sent a spray of glowing, bioluminescent foam into the air. The Southern Alphas stood along the railings. Their fur looked matted and damp in the thick sea mist. They were wolves of the plains and the forests. The open ocean felt like a predator they could not bite, a vastness that mocked their strength. Elara stood at the prow. Her white hair whipped around her face like a tattered flag. She held the white-steel sword in her right hand. The metal felt cold, vibrating with a low, rhythmic frequency that matched the pulse of the tides. Beside her, the twins sat in a reinforced si

  • The Alpha King’s Surrogate Secret   Chapter 25: The Hidden Vessels

The throne room of the Citadel stood transformed. The heavy, gold-leafed tapestries of the High Council had been burned. In their place hung simple banners of white wool and charcoal leather. The air remained crisp, smelling of pine resin and the sharp, clean scent of the high peaks. Elara stood by the Great Map, a massive table carved from a single slab of obsidian. Her white hair cascaded over her shoulders, glowing with a soft, inner light that refused to fade. She traced the jagged lines of the Eastern Coast with a steady finger. Beside her, Kaelen watched every movement of her hand. His presence felt like a warm hearth in a winter storm, yet his eyes remained fixed on the leather journal Silas had provided. "The Sea-Packs have always been isolated," Kaelen remarked. His voice carried the deep resonance of a shifting glacier. "They answer to no High King. They follow the tides. If the Elders have hidden vessels there, we are looking at a fortress made of sa

  • The Alpha King’s Surrogate Secret   Chapter 24: The Coronation of the Frost

The morning sun rose over the Iron Mountains with a clarity that had been absent for a generation. The purple haze of the Eclipse was gone. In its place remained a sky of brilliant, piercing blue. The valley below the Citadel appeared transformed. The ruins of the Earth-Shaker had settled into the earth, forming new, jagged hills of white quartz and granite that glittered like diamonds in the light. The soldiers of the Southern Packs and the Northern Guard stood together. They did not face each other with blades drawn. They stood in a massive, silent circle around the base of the palace. Elara stood in the center of the Royal Suite. She looked at her reflection in the full-length silver mirror. Her hair remained the color of fresh snow, a brilliant, metallic white that seemed to catch and hold the sunlight. Her eyes retained their pale, glacial blue. She appeared older, yet not aged. The exhaustion had vanished. In its place sat a regal, ancient weight. She loo

The bond did not simply fade. It shattered. Back at the Citadel, Kaelen felt the psychic connection to Elara rip away like a limb being torn from his torso. One moment, her presence acted as a warm, golden anchor in the back of his mind. The next, there remained only a cold, hollow void. The silence was louder than any scream. It carried the finality of a grave. Kaelen dropped to his knees in the snow. His fingers clawed at the frozen earth, his head bowed as the air left his lungs. The Alphas and guards standing on the ramparts froze. They felt the sudden, violent shift in the atmosphere. The temperature did not just drop; the moisture in the air turned to jagged shards of ice instantly. A sound began to rise from Kaelen’s throat. It started as a low, guttural vibration. It grew into a howl of such pure, unbridled agony that the stone walls of the Royal Suite cracked. The glass in the windows exploded outward, showering the courtyard in a rain of crystalline shards. "Kaelen!"

The High Temple of the Great Moon did not feel like a place of worship. Built into the jagged cliffs of the Iron Mountains, it was a monolith of cold, white marble and windowless corridors. As the heavy iron gates groaned shut behind Elara, the sound echoing through the cavernous foyer, she felt th
