Davian's POV

I was only in the medical wing because Alyssa had requested I come

I walked through the door and saw Kyra already seated on the examination table, pale, her hands folded tightly in her lap, dark circles under her eyes that hadn't been there four days ago.

She looked up the moment I crossed the threshold and her green eyes met mine across the short distance and held for one sharp second too long.

Neither of us spoke.

The last time we had been alone in a room the air had changed a

Jazmine's POV"It's you," Kieran said again, quieter this time, like the first time hadn't fully convinced even him.I froze with the little prince still latched hard, my uniform open on one side, one full breast bare and wet where his small mouth worked in strong, rhythmic pulls. I got the baby settled first, hands shaking, moving faster than they should have, adjusting my bodice with quick, clumsy fingers while the infant made small, sleepy sounds of protest at being shifted away from the breast"Your Highness." I kept my voice low, my back half-turned toward him as I finished buttoning my collar. "This isn't-Whatever you think you remember, it isn't what it looked like.""I don't think I remember anything clearly enough to know what it looked like." He stepped further into the room, moving slowly, one hand pressed lightly against his side where the bandages still sat beneath his shirt. His voice was rougher than I expected, worn thin from days of recovering. "I remember a voice tel

Jazmine's POVRose was almost done when Jake walked into the kitchen.I sat in the low chair by the window, bodice open on one side, her small body tucked against the full, heavy curve of my breast. She nursed in slow, sleepy pulls, tiny mouth working, one hand resting on the soft warm skin, milk had already leaked a little onto the fabric. The morning light caught the fine red hair on her head. Jake stopped in the doorway, his eyes went straight to my bare breast, to the place where our daughter latched, then up to my face, jaw already tight, eyes dark. The air shifted the way it always did when he was angry and trying not to put his hands on me.“You’re really going back," he said."I told you I would." I kept my voice even, focused on Rose's small face, her eyes half-closed, one hand curled loosely against my collarbone the way she always fell asleep at the breast. "I already spoke to Alyssa about it last night.""Without talking to me first.""We talked about it two days ago, Ja

  • The Alpha King's Surrogate    Chapter 29: The Nursery

Jazmine's POV I got there earlier than I needed to. It was part of my habits, showing up early was one of the few things I still had full control over in my own life, and this morning I needed as much of that as I could get my hands on. Jake hadn't taken it well. I'd known he wouldn't, but knowing didn't make the argument any easier, his jaw locked tight the whole time, that particular quiet he went into when he was too angry to trust his own voice, the way he'd finally said, low and flat, do what you want, Jazmine, you always do, and gone to bed without another word. I'd lain awake most of the night listening to him breathe beside me, wondering if this was the fight that finally cracked something we couldn't put back together. I pushed the thought down, it wasn't helpful. The corridor outside the royal nursery wing was quieter than the main servant halls, all soft carpets and closed doors that made every footstep feel too loud. My uniform felt tighter than usual across my chest,

  • The Alpha King's Surrogate    Chapter 28: Neither Of Us Looked Away

Kyra's POV The knock came later than I'd expected, well past the hour Dr. Alyssa usually finished her rounds, and when I opened the door she looked genuinely apologetic, tucking a loose strand of gray hair back behind her ear. "Forgive the late hour, Miss Sinclair," she said, stepping inside and setting her bag down on the small table by the window. "Prince Dorian's household kept me longer than I planned. The infant's still struggling, and there was a great deal to sort through before I could get away." "Is the baby alright?" I asked. "Stable, for now. That's a conversation for another time, though." She pulled her instruments out one by one, laying them across the cloth she always spread beside my bed for examinations, and glanced toward the door as it opened again. Davian stepped in, still in the dark coat he wore for evening Council work, and Alyssa nodded at him without breaking stride. "Your Majesty," Allyssa said. "Thank you for coming." "You asked me to be here." He sai

Kyra's POV Davian was already in my suite when I returned, standing near the window with his hands clasped behind his back, and he turned the moment the door opened, something sharp crossing his face before I'd even said a word. "What happened?" "Nothing." I set down the small basket of pears I'd picked in the orchard, keeping my voice light, though I could feel my own pulse still not fully settled. "Kyra." He said calmly, and somehow that was worse than if he'd pushed harder. I sighed and set the basket aside properly. "I ran into Prince Dorian in the garden." His expression shifted immediately, jis brows drew together, his jaw tightening as the warmth disappeared from his face. His eyes narrowed slightly, fixed on me with a sudden intensity that had nothing to do with jealousy. There "You were alone with him?" "No I wasn't," I said. "The guards were with me the entire time.."He didn't do anything, Davian. We spoke for a minute. That's all." "What did he want?" I studied hi

  • The Alpha King's Surrogate    Chapter 26: Be Careful Around Him

Kyra's POV I lay awake longer than I should have last night, turning yesterday's visit over in my head like a stone I couldn't stop rubbing smooth. He had asked what I ate, not in the clipped, clinical way Dr. Alyssa did it, actual follow-up, like the answer mattered beyond a chart. Then the garden access. The guards had already been told to expand the cleared paths. He was the same man who had stood in this room and told me I had no right to question him was suddenly asking about toast and rice and whether I was getting outside air.It didn't add up, I had learned the hard way from everything Liam had thought to not trust the soft sides of powerful men. They usually hid the sharper ones.A soft knock came at the door, then Jazmine came in with the tray. Chicken and rice again, plus the plain toast she knew I could keep down. She set it on the table and looked distracted, a little tighter around the eyes than usual."You alright?" I asked, reaching for the toast."I'm fine." She bus
