Killian POV

“Draven's been there three times this week,” Owen said, handing me a folded page as he fell into step beside me.

I unfolded it as we walked. Lise had written the report. She ran the Hollow Crown, an inn on the border road where Voss officers had held their quieter meetings in the back room for years.

She had been passing Owen what she overheard there for almost as long, and she had never given us information that turned out to be wrong.

Killian POV“Draven's been there three times this week,” Owen said, handing me a folded page as he fell into step beside me.I unfolded it as we walked. Lise had written the report. She ran the Hollow Crown, an inn on the border road where Voss officers had held their quieter meetings in the back room for years. She had been passing Owen what she overheard there for almost as long, and she had never given us information that turned out to be wrong.“Not to drink,” Owen continued. “He goes straight to the back room, and the men waiting for him are senior Voss people. Lise recognised two of them from their own council.”I read the page twice. Dates. Times. A description of Draven that left little doubt. Lise had even noted the car he arrived in, the same dark, expensive one Vivienne had seen outside our gates the day he first showed up.“He's selling her secret,” I said.“That’s how I read it too.” Owen kept his eyes on the path. “It would explain how fast the rumor spread. If Draven g

Vivienne POV“You didn’t have to say all of that,” I said, watching the last light fade over the grounds below. “In there. About trusting me completely.”We had ended up on the same terrace where Killian had first told me about Adaline. The evening had gone quiet, the kind of quiet that came after every storm in this house and never lasted long before the next one arrived.“I know I didn’t have to.” He turned to face me fully. For a moment, nothing guarded his face. Then he seemed to remember himself and pulled that control back into place. “I wanted to. I meant it.”“It’s a big political risk. Declaring that kind of trust before the investigation even ends.”“Then it’s a risk I’m willing to carry.”He held my gaze.“I meant every word I said in that chamber, Vivienne. Not as strategy. Not as some calculated move to shift the room, even though I know that’s what it did.”“Then what was it?”“The truth,” he said. “Finally said somewhere other people could hear it.”My fingers tightened

Vivienne POV“Before this session adjourns,” I said, rising from my seat, “I'd like the chance to answer directly, rather than let an investigation speak for me while I sit silently waiting for its conclusion.”Fenwick had barely finished announcing the investigation before I stood. I wasn't going to let Marcus's doubt be the last thing anyone in this chamber remembered.Fenwick studied me for a moment, then gestured for me to continue. “The floor is yours, Lady Vivienne.”I turned to face the full chamber and kept my hands still at my sides, even though I could feel them wanting to shake. “Let's examine the timeline Marcus finds so convenient,” I said. “I visited Maple Hollow Clinic before I had any reason to know Killian Cross existed. I asked for an anonymous human donor because I was terrified of this world.“Several staff members at that clinic can confirm it, since I specifically asked to avoid shifter involvement. The mix-up that followed was a clerical error, one the clinic h

Vivienne's POVThe council chamber filled faster than usual that morning. News of Marcus's emergency session had already spread through the house, bringing several observers who would normally have had no reason to attend.Killian sat beside me at the table. Since the ritual, his place there had become a formality. A few months ago, no one would have allowed it. I was glad he was there, though the tension in the room made it hard to relax.Marcus rose as soon as everyone had settled. “I have a matter of considerable urgency to raise,” he said. “It concerns the legitimacy of what this council witnessed during the recent verification ritual.”A murmur went through the observers. My fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Beside me, Killian became very still. I had learned what that meant. He was angry, but he was keeping it under control.“The ritual was witnessed by representatives from three separate packs,” Fenwick said. “Delegates from Voss were also present and inspected eve

Vivienne's POV“Lady Vivienne, I owe you an apology.”I looked up from the book I'd been pretending to read for the last half hour. Elder Bramwell stood at the edge of the gravel path, his hands clasped in front of him. He kept a careful distance.Of all the places in the garden, he'd chosen this one. The stone bench by the hedge, where Draven had once cornered me and made his threats. Months later, I still found myself checking over my shoulder whenever I sat here.“Of course,” I said, closing the book around my thumb.I knew Bramwell's face. He'd been the quiet one during the treaty session. While the others had been openly hostile, he'd simply watched me. Since then, he'd studied me across every council table as if he were trying to figure me out.Somehow, that had frightened me more than the open hostility.Bramwell took a breath. “I should have said this weeks ago.”““What kind of apology is it?”His fingers tightened together. “One I should have given you before the ritual.”I w

Killian"What is this?"Vivienne stood in the corridor outside her room, still in her dressing gown, staring at the unfamiliar guard stationed outside her door. Her eyes moved to the second guard I'd placed near the stairwell before returning to me.I had doubled her security detail before breakfast, reassigned two additional guards to her wing, and arranged for an escort to accompany her anywhere beyond the estate's inner walls. I'd done all of it before Vivienne had fully woken enough to object."Precaution," I said."You didn't ask me.""I didn't think I needed permission to keep you safe."Her expression tightened. "That's not the point, Killian. I understand the danger. I lived through the attack, remember? I don't need you managing my life like I'm a threat to be contained. I'm a person who gets to have an opinion about her own safety."I felt the familiar tension rise between instinct and restraint. It was the same battle I'd been fighting since the night I froze her accounts w
