By breakfast, Cerys had learned that almost-certain bad news made other people inventive. A woman from stores stopped beside her table with a mug in each hand.

“If the answer is no, at least you get one easy moon.”

Cerys looked up.

The woman smiled, trying to be kind. “After the way you usually come back, maybe you’ll be the lucky one for once.”

“No.”

The smile slipped. Cerys set down her spoon.

“The decision is tomorrow. Until then, don’t call me lucky.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“I know,”

Rhys found her before she had to go looking for him. He was standing outside the dining room, talking to two people Cerys barely registered. The moment he saw her, the conversation ended. That annoyed her before he said anything. Cerys stopped in front of him.“You asked me to tell you today.”Rhys went still. She did not make him ask twice.“I’m not cleared. Elis said I’m unfit to shift.”The relief came first. It crossed his face so fast he could not hide it, a release through his shoulders and jaw before the rest of him caught up.Cerys saw the exact moment he realized she had seen. Rhys closed his mouth.“Don’t,” she said.“I wasn’t going to say anything.”“You were going to say you’re sorry.”He looked away for half a second.“Yes.”“I know you are.”That did not erase the relief.Rhys looked back at her. “I hate that you’re hurt by it.”“But you’re glad I’m staying.”His answer took longer.“Yes.”The honesty hurt less than denial would have. Rhys did not tell her it was for the

Elis did not make her wait for a gentler version.“You’re unfit to shift.”Cerys had known the answer was coming. That did not help. For a moment, she looked at him as if he had spoken in a language she understood everywhere except those four words. The room stayed ordinary around them. The same narrow table. The same closed door. Morning noise moving faintly through the corridor outside.Nothing changed except the month. Cerys put both hands flat on her thighs.“Final?”“Yes.”There was no maybe left, no remaining day to bargain with. She nodded once. Elis did not fill the silence. That was worse than being comforted and better than being lied to.Cerys had spent the last twenty-four hours preparing herself to hear the word. She had decided she would not argue. She had decided she would not make Elis repeat the reasons until repetition turned into cruelty. She had decided she would take the verdict like a person who understood the difference between wanting and safety.Apparently, de

Staying inside sounded like rest if Wolf Night was something that happened to other people. It sounded safe if all anyone remembered was the condition Cerys returned in.For Cerys, it sounded like being left behind. The woman nodded, embarrassed, and moved away. Across the room, Elis had heard them.He did not come over. He did not turn Cerys’s answer into something more reasonable for the woman to accept.Good. Cerys finished breakfast a

Cerys had promised herself she would ask the question once. She still had three different versions of it ready by the time Elis sat across from her.The room was too ordinary for a verdict. A chair, a narrow table, a closed door. Nothing about it looked capable of taking Wolf Night away from her.Elis had already given her the only result that mattered. The margin was too small. Not impossible in the absolute sense. Not final yet. But too small for him to pretend the remaining time was likely to change what he was seeing.Cerys stared at the table between them.“So if I get another good day.”She looked up.“I know,” she said. “I said I’d ask once.”“That sounded like the beginning of a second question.”“It was the same question with better wording.”“No,” Elis said. The word was quiet.Cerys hated it anyway.Elis leaned back slightly. “A good day would still be good. It wouldn’t make the margin bigger enough to mean what you want it to mean.”“How do you know what I want it to mean?

Cerys opened the Wolf Night folder and found the pages she had written weeks ago.For once, the problem was not that she might never read them again. It was that she might be standing in hydroponics while everyone else did.She sat at her desk before the morning shift properly gathered around her and read the first page twice. The instructions were still useful. That annoyed her. They had been written for the version of the month in which she recovered, shifted, disappeared into the blank stretch of Wolf Night, and either came back or did not.Now there was another possibility.Cerys took a pen and wrote one line at the top.If I am here, ask me.She stared at it.Then she laughed once under her breath.Mara, passing behind her, stopped.“What?”“Nothing.”“That sounded like something,” Mara said.Cerys turned the folder so Mara could see the new line.Mara read it.Her mouth twitched. “Efficient.”“It’s ridiculous.”“A little.”“I wrote all of this in case I died,” Cerys said.Mara’s

By midday, Cerys had run out of reasons to call the morning a fluke. Her hands were steady. Her side had not sharpened past a manageable ache. She had been on her feet, sat when she meant to sit, eaten when she meant to eat, and returned to work without the heavy drag that had ruined other good starts.Mara glanced at the clock, then at her.“You’re staying for the rest?”Cerys looked back toward the hydroponics floor.“Yes.”Mara studied her for half a second longer than necessary.“What?”“Nothing.”“That was absolutely something,” Cerys said.“I was deciding whether to say congratulations or mind my own business.”“Try the second one.”“Congratulations,” Mara said.Cerys rolled her eyes and went back to work. The afternoon gave her every opportunity to regret the choice.A delivery came late. Two people needed decisions at the same time. A mistake made earlier in the week had finally become visible in the only way mistakes ever seemed to become visible: when everyone was already bu
