The council hall was packed by dusk, every bench filled, warriors lining the walls three deep. Word of what had happened at the ceremony had spread through Ashwood faster than any messenger could have carried it, and half the pack seemed to have come just to see how it would end. I stood in the center of it all in the same dress I'd been arrested in, the scorched scrap of paper hidden in my palm because I hadn't found a single person all day willing to look at it before the trial began.

Damon sat on the Alpha's seat above the gathered elders, and I searched his face the moment I was brought in, desperate for some sign that the bond meant what I'd felt in that hall the night before. He looked wrecked. Sleepless. His eyes found mine and held there, and for one breath I let myself believe he was going to stop this before it started.

Elder Cole rose first. "Bring forward the evidence."

A warrior placed the leather pouch on the table before the council, the herbs and thread Vivienne claimed to have found under my mattress laid out like a confession that had already been written.

"I've never touched those," I said. "Someone put them there to be found."

"By whom?" Elder Cole asked, and the question hung in the air like a trap I'd already walked into.

I looked at Vivienne, seated beside her father in pale blue silk, dabbing at eyes that weren't actually crying. "By her."

Gasps rippled through the hall. Vivienne pressed a hand to her chest like I'd struck her. "I have done nothing but grieve the loss of the man I was promised to since I was twelve years old, and now I'm to be accused of witchcraft by the girl who stole him?"

"I have proof she planned this before the ceremony," I said, holding up the scorched paper with a hand I fought to keep steady. "A letter, burned two nights before the Moon Rite. A servant saved this piece from the hearth."

Elder Cole took it from me, turned it over once, and set it down without even reading it aloud. "A torn scrap with three illegible words is not proof of anything. It could belong to any correspondence. Wedding preparations require a hundred letters."

"Read it," I said. "Let the council ear it."

"The council has seen quite enough forged evidence for one trial." His voice had gone hard as stone. "Bring the servant who claims to have given this to you."

I turned to gesture toward the door, already knowing what I would find before I found it. Empty. No one came forward. I hadn't gotten her name. In my panic I hadn't asked, and now there was no one in that hall to confirm a word I'd said.

"There's no witness," Elder Cole announced, "because there is no witness. Only a story."

Vivienne rose slowly, and when she spoke her voice was gentle, almost pitying, which made it land far worse than anger would have. "I don't hate you for this. Truly. Whatever hold Crimson Hollow's magic has on you, I don't believe you chose it. But this pack cannot survive with an unknown spy sitting where its Luna should stand."

I looked at Damon. He hadn't spoken once since I'd been brought in, and the longer his silence stretched the colder the room around me seemed to get.

"Damon." His name came out smaller than I meant it to. "You know what you felt. You know it was real."

He stood slowly, and for a moment I thought he was going to walk down from that seat and put himself between me and the whole hall. Instead he looked at the pouch on the table, at the scrap of burned paper no one had bothered to read, at his own council staring up at him waiting for a verdict he clearly hadn't wanted to reach.

"I felt something," he said quietly. "I won't deny that. But a bond I can't verify against evidence I can't ignore isn't enough to risk this entire pack on."

"Then ask someone to actually read the letter," I said, my voice cracking now despite everything I did to hold it steady. "Ask someone to find the girl who gave it to me. Don't decide this on a pouch that appeared under my mattress the same night I collapsed in front of three hundred witnesses."

"I have to think of Ashwood first." He wouldn't look at me directly anymore, which told me everything the words hadn't. "I, Damon Ashwood, Alpha of this pack, rejects the mate bond placed upon me this night, and release the girl known as Sera from any claim on this territory."

The hall went utterly silent, and then it didn't, elders murmuring their approval, Vivienne's shoulders sagging in visible, theatrical relief.

I felt the bond tear. Not fade, not weaken. Tear, like something physically ripping loose from behind my ribs, a pain so total that for a moment the entire hall went white at the edges of my vision, and I dropped to my knees on the stone floor with a sound I didn't recognize as my own voice.

No one moved to help me up. Not one of the servants I had worked beside for months, not one of the elders who had eaten food I'd cooked, not the Alpha whose rejection had just put me on the floor in front of everyone I had ever known here. Guards were already moving to escort me out, hands closing hard around my arms, and Vivienne watched me go with an expression she didn't even bother to hide this time, satisfied and cold and utterly certain she had won.

They dragged me through the front gates.

the sun sets, just past the treeline, where the forest opened onto the eastern ridge road, three hooded figures stepped out of the dark And blocked our path.

We moved east under what little cover the thinning trees still offered.Talia kept the pace brutal and steady. The two other scouts ranged wide, one ahead and one behind, while the runner who had brought Vivienne’s letter stayed close enough to relay any signal. I conserved the fire as much as the hunt allowed. Every time the residual silver light tried to surface under my skin I forced it down again, though the effort left a low, constant ache behind my eyes. The letter’s warning stayed sharp in my mind: Kael wanted me using the power. Every flare spent time I no longer had in abundance.Near dawn the trees opened onto the northern road—the old packed-earth track that once carried trade between the border villages and the outer Ashwood holdings. It should have been empty. Instead we found the remains of a fight that had ended only hours earlier.Bodies lay scattered across the road and into the ditches. Most wore the mixed cloaks of the small combined patrols my father and Damon had

Night settled fully while I rested in the blind.Talia rotated the watch without comment. One scout remained at the upper approach, the other at the lower. I used the time to force the silver light as far down as it would go. It obeyed more slowly than it used to. Even after I stopped calling it, a faint shimmer lingered along the insides of my wrists and at the base of my throat, visible whenever the covered lamp was unshielded for a moment. Talia saw it. She did not speak of it again.Near midnight the lower scout gave a short, controlled whistle.Talia extinguished the lamp and moved to the entrance in silence. A moment later she returned with a fourth figure—a Crimson Hollow runner I recognized from the main compound, face streaked with dirt and the kind of exhaustion that came from hard travel through hostile ground. He dropped to one knee, breathing hard, and held out a sealed packet.“Intercepted on the old trade road south of the burning villages,” he said. “Carrier was Bloodm

The pines eventually gave way to a narrower stretch of mixed forest where the ground turned rocky and the canopy thinned. I slowed only enough to keep my footing. The horns had not faded completely; they had simply spread wider, trying to drive me toward the open ground to the west where the next burned village still sent up smoke. The silver light under my skin would not fully die.I kept checking my wrists as I ran. Every time I thought I had forced the last glow down, a faint shimmer returned along the veins, visible even in the low light. It answered my heartbeat instead of my will. Mara’s words stayed with me stride after stride. The fraying had begun. I was no longer imagining it.A steep bank dropped toward a shallow river I did not recognize from any map I had studied. I slid down it on my heels and entered the water without hesitation, letting the current carry me a short distance before I climbed out on the opposite side. The cold helped. For a few minutes the glow beneath m

The circle closed faster than I could reshape the fire.Orange light flared from a dozen palms at once, forcing my silver shield tighter and tighter around the stone platform. Every impact sent a fresh tremor up my arms. The moonfire no longer answered with clean precision. It surged and lagged in uneven pulses, as if it had grown tired of being told what shape to take and wanted only to burn free.I chose the narrowest point in the ring and drove a spear of silver straight through it.The fighter who took the hit went down hard. The two beside him staggered. I leapt from the platform in that small gap and hit the meadow running. Orange bolts scorched the grass on either side of me. One clipped my shoulder hard enough to spin me halfway around, but the fire in my own blood closed the burn before it could deepen. I kept my feet and plunged into the trees on the far side. They followed.Branches whipped my face. Roots tried to take my ankles. I let the silver light flare in short, brigh

I ran until the smoke from the first village was only a dark smear behind me. The silver fire stayed just high enough to leave a faint trail of light through the trees—bright enough for Kael’s scouts to follow, controlled enough that I could still pull it back if I had to. Every time I let the power rise, the cost settled deeper into my bones. Mara’s warning lived in every tremor of my hands. The clock she had measured in days was now counting in hours. Horns answered one another across the ridges. They were no longer searching in wide patterns. They had locked onto the silver and were closing with purpose. I kept to the higher ground, using the rocky spine of the hills the way Rowe had taught me years ago, forcing the pursuers to climb while I moved along the spine. Twice I stopped long enough to shape a brief, bright flare and send it arcing over the treetops like a signal. Both times the horns shifted direction almost immediately. They were hunting the fire, not the woman carry

By late afternoon the trees began to thin and the smell of smoke reached us on the wind. Not the thin, controlled smoke of cook fires. This was heavier, laced with the sharp reek of burning thatch and the darker undertone of pitch. Cato stopped us at the edge of a rocky overlook and pointed north. In the distance, beyond the last belt of pine, three separate columns of black smoke rose against the pale sky. “Border villages,” he said. “The ones that sit between Ashwood’s northern holdings and the old contested line. Kael isn’t waiting for you to bring those records anywhere. He’s already started the next phase.” Damon stared at the smoke with a face carved from stone. The bond wound had worsened through the day’s hard travel; every breath he took was measured and careful. I felt the drag of it through the unfinished connection like a constant weight against my own ribs. The silver fire stirred restlessly, sensing the violence ahead the same way it had sensed the army on the ridge
