Jeff found Vance in the hallway before first period, leaning against a row of lockers with dark circles under his eyes. One look at him was enough to tell something was wrong.

"Dude." Jeff grabbed his arm and pulled him away from the passing crowd. "You look like death warmed over."

Vance rubbed his tired eyes. "I didn't sleep."

"Still thinking about the hunter?"

Vance nodded. "His name is Marcus Hale. Lyra's father." Saying the name aloud made the memories even more vivid. "He's the one from the woods, Jeff. The one with the crossbow. He saw me yesterday."

Jeff's expression immediately turned serious. "Did he say anything when he picked Lyra up yesterday?"

"He just stared at me," Vance replied, replaying the encounter in his mind. "Like he was trying to remember where he'd seen me before. Then I overheard him telling Lyra to stay away from me."

Jeff let out a slow breath. "Okay... that's bad. But does he know you're a werewolf?"

"No," Vance answered quietly. "Not yet."

"Then that's our advantage." Jeff lowered his voice, making sure no one nearby could overhear them. "Right now, all he knows is that you were attacked. If you stay calm and don't give him any reason to investigate, he'll have nothing to go on."

Vance wished it were that simple. Marcus Hale wasn't just an overprotective father he was a hunter. Hunters didn't stop chasing something just because they lacked proof.

"I don't think he's going to let this go," Vance admitted.

"Maybe not," Jeff said, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder, "but panicking won't help. Lay low. Stay away from trouble. And whatever you do, don't lose control."

Lose control.

The words echoed inside Vance's mind as a sudden wave of heightened awareness washed over him. He heard lockers slamming at the far end of the corridor, sneakers squeaking against polished floors, whispered conversations from classrooms with closed doors, even the steady rhythm of dozens of heartbeats surrounding him.

His breathing became uneven.

The wolf stirred.

Easy, he told himself. Not here.

"Vance?"

Jeff's voice snapped him back to reality.

"You okay?"

Vance blinked several times before the overwhelming sounds faded into the background. "Yeah," he lied. "Just tired."

Jeff frowned but didn't press further. "You need to figure out how to control this before someone else notices."

Vance nodded, though he wasn't sure he could. Every day, the wolf felt stronger. Every day, pretending to be normal became a little harder.

More than anything, he wanted to stay away from Lyra for her own safety.

The problem was...

He wasn't sure he could.

---

Biology class felt endless.

Vance settled into his usual seat and immediately glanced toward the classroom door. Every time it opened, his heart skipped a beat, only to sink again when another student walked in.

Mr. Harrison began writing Cellular Structure across the whiteboard before launching into another enthusiastic lecture. Normally, Vance enjoyed biology. Today, the words blended into meaningless noise.

Where was Lyra?

Had Marcus kept her home?

Had he started asking questions about the boy he'd seen in the woods?

The longer she stayed away, the worse the possibilities became.

At the same time, Vance's senses refused to leave him alone. The faint scent of fresh coffee drifted in from the teachers' lounge. He could hear pencils scratching across notebooks, the ticking clock above the board, and the heartbeat of the student sitting behind him.

He clenched his fists beneath the desk.

Focus.

You're in class.

You're human.

The classroom door opened.

Vance looked up so quickly that his chair nearly scraped across the floor.

Lyra stood in the doorway, slightly out of breath, a loose strand of dark hair falling across her face.

"Sorry I'm late, Mr. Harrison."

The teacher adjusted his glasses with an amused sigh. "Overslept Miss Hale?"

She smiled sheepishly. "Afraid so."

"Take your seat."

As she walked toward him, Vance felt the tightness in his chest ease for the first time that morning.

"Hey," she whispered, slipping into the empty chair beside him.

"Hey."

"Did I miss anything?"

He smiled. "Only Mr. Harrison trying to convince everyone that mitochondria are the most exciting thing in the universe."

She laughed softly. "The powerhouse of the cell?"

"You know that?"

"I recall coming across it in one of my textbooks."

Their eyes met, and for a brief moment the classroom disappeared. The fear, the nightmares, Marcus Hale everything faded until all Vance could see was the girl smiling beside him.

Then her scent reached him.

Lavender.

Something uniquely Lyra.

The wolf responded instantly.

His pulse quickened. His senses sharpened. He gripped the edge of his desk as the urge to lean closer threatened to overpower his self-control.

Easy, he reminded himself. She's not prey. She's Lyra.

"Vance?"

Her gentle voice broke through his thoughts.

"You okay?"

He forced himself to relax and released the desk before she noticed the faint marks his fingers had left in the wood.

"Yeah," he said with a small smile. "Just didn't get much sleep."

She studied him for another second, unconvinced, but before she could ask another question, Mr. Harrison stopped beside their table.

"Mr. Rourke," the teacher said, folding his arms. "Since Miss Hale seems to have your full attention, perhaps you'd like to explain the function of the mitochondria."

The classroom burst into laughter.

Vance rubbed the back of his neck. "They produce ATP by converting nutrients into usable energy for the cell."

Mr. Harrison nodded approvingly. "Correct. At least someone was paying attention."

Lyra smiled innocently. "I was only making sure my lab partner stayed awake."

Another round of laughter filled the room, and even Mr. Harrison chuckled before continuing his lesson.

Vance shook his head, unable to stop smiling.

"You did that on purpose."

"Maybe."

"You enjoy embarrassing me."

"A little."

He laughed quietly.

For the first time since the bite, the weight on his shoulders felt a little lighter.

But deep down, he knew peace like this couldn't last and somewhere outside those classroom walls, Marcus Hale was searching for answers.

-----

The bell rang, and the classroom quickly filled with the sounds of scraping chairs and students talking as they packed their bags. Vance slipped his notebook into his backpack while Lyra gathered her things beside him.

"I still can't believe Mr. Harrison put you on the spot," she said with a laugh.

"You started it."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

She nudged his shoulder playfully. "Maybe a little."

Vance chuckled, surprised by how easily she made him forget everything weighing on his mind. For a few precious moments, Marcus Hale, the wolf, and the fear of being discovered faded into the background.

As they stepped into the hallway, Jeff caught up with them. "There you two are. Lyra, good to see you again."

"Hey, Jeff." She smiled warmly. "How's calculus?"

Jeff groaned dramatically. "Like it's trying to ruin my life."

Vance rolled his eyes. "Don't listen to him. He says that every week."

"And every week I'm right," Jeff replied without missing a beat, earning another laugh from Lyra.

"So," he continued, glancing between them, "still heading to the library for your biology study session?"

"We are," Lyra answered.

He placed a hand over his chest. "No invitation? I'm hurt."

"You can join us if you want," she offered.

"Nah." He grinned knowingly. "I'd only distract you two."

"You mean you'd distract yourself," Vance corrected.

"Details." Jeff winked before looking at Vance. The playful smile remained on his face, but his eyes carried a silent warning. Be careful.

"I'll leave you two to your science," he said as he walked away.

Lyra watched him disappear into the crowd before glancing at Vance. "He's a good friend."

"The best," Vance admitted. "He's been looking out for me for years."

"I can tell."

They continued toward the library, talking about classes and teachers until they reached the quiet building. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting long beams across rows of bookshelves. Only a handful of students occupied the study tables, creating the peaceful atmosphere the library was known for.

Vance set the microscope on a table while Lyra opened her notebook and biology textbook. "This is a lot better than trying to study in a noisy classroom," she said.

"I come here whenever I need to clear my head."

"I can see why."

For a while, they focused on their biology practical, taking turns examining prepared slides and comparing notes. Their shoulders brushed occasionally as they leaned over the microscope, and each accidental touch made Vance's heart beat a little faster.

"So," Lyra said after several minutes, "what's the story with you and Jeff? You two act more like brothers than friends."

Vance smiled. "Sometimes I think we are. We've known each other since middle school."

"You've always been that close?"

He shook his head. "Not at first. Things changed after my mom died."

Lyra's expression softened. "I'm sorry."

"I didn't handle it well," he admitted quietly. "I pushed everyone away. Most people eventually stopped trying to help." He paused before adding, "Jeff didn't."

"He stayed?"

"Yeah. Even when I gave him every reason to leave."

A gentle smile crossed Lyra's face as she reached across the table and rested her hand over his. "That's what real friends do."

The warmth of her touch spread through him, and for a brief moment, everything felt peaceful. Then her scent reached him lavender mixed with the fresh smell lingering in her hair. Instantly, the wolf responded.

His hearing sharpened until he could make out the faint rustle of pages from the far side of the library and the steady rhythm of Lyra's heartbeat. He tightened his grip beneath the table, forcing himself to stay calm.

Control it. She's safe.

"Vance?"

He blinked and realized she was studying him with concern.

"You disappeared again."

"I'm sorry."

"You've done that a few times today." She tilted her head slightly. "And every time you're hiding something, your left eyebrow twitches."

Without thinking, Vance touched his eyebrow.

Lyra smiled triumphantly. "I knew it."

He laughed despite himself. "So now you're studying me instead of biology?"

"Maybe." She leaned back with a teasing smile. "You're easier to read than you think."

His smile slowly faded.

She noticed immediately.

"Hey," she said softly, "you don't have to tell me anything before you're ready. I just... don't like seeing you carry everything alone."

Vance looked down at their hands. If she knew the truth if she knew what lived beneath his skin, what he was slowly becoming would she still be sitting this close to him? Would she still be holding his hand?

He wanted to believe she would.

"I'll tell you someday," he said quietly.

She held his gaze for a long moment before smiling. "Then I'll wait."

Those simple words struck him harder than she could ever know.

For the first time since the bite, Vance allowed himself to hope.

At the same time, a painful truth settled deep in his heart.

The longer he waited...

The greater the chance that Marcus Hale would tell her first.

-----

The afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the rooftops when Vance arrived at the garage for his evening shift. The familiar smell of grease and oil filled the air, but it did little to settle his restless mind. He had barely changed into his working outfit when Jeff slid into a booth near the counter.

"You've been staring at the thin air for almost a minute," Jeff said. "That's usually a sign that something's wrong."

Vance managed a tired smile and looked up at him. "Today was... good."

Jeff raised an eyebrow. "Good?"

"I spent the afternoon with Lyra."

"And?"

"And it felt normal." Vance looked down at the counter. "For a little while, I almost forgot everything."

Jeff studied him for a moment before asking the question he already knew the answer to.

"You still didn't tell her."

Vance sighed. "No."

"You've got to stop putting it off."

"I know."

"No, Vance you really do." Jeff leaned forward, lowering his voice. "Marcus Hale isn't just suspicious anymore. If he figures out what's happening before Lyra hears it from you, you won't just lose her."

Vance looked up.

"You'll have a hunter coming after you."

Silence settled between them.

"I keep thinking I'll find the right moment," Vance admitted. "Every time I look at her, I want to tell her everything... but then I imagine the fear on her face."

"You don't know she'll be afraid."

"I know what I am."

Jeff shook his head. "No. You know what happened to you. That's not the same thing."

Vance didn't answer.

Jeff sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"She looks at you like you're the safest person in the room. Don't let someone else destroy that before she hears the truth from you."

Vance stared at the untouched fries between them before giving a slow nod.

"I'll tell her."

Jeff smirked.

"When?"

Vance smiled weakly.

"Soon."

Jeff groaned dramatically.

"That's exactly what you said yesterday."

"I mean it this time."

"I hope so." Jeff stood, grabbing his backpack. "Just don't wait until it's too late."

As Jeff left the garage, Vance watched him disappear through the iron doors. Deep down, he knew his friend was right.

The truth couldn't stay hidden forever.

---

That night, Lyra lay awake in bed, unable to stop replaying the events of the day. Every smile, every laugh, every moment she had spent with Vance drifted through her thoughts.

But so did the moments when he'd gone quiet.

The distant look in his eyes.

The way he seemed to be listening to sounds no one else could hear.

The strange tension that appeared whenever she got too close.

He was hiding something.

She was certain of it.

Yet despite everything, she never once felt afraid of him.

Quite the opposite.

When she was with Vance, she felt safe.

She smiled at herself.

"Whatever you're carrying," she whispered into the darkness, "I'll wait until you're ready."

---

Across town, Vance sat alone on the floor of his apartment, the lights switched off.

Moonlight spilled through the window, casting silver shadows across the room.

His body felt strangely restless.

He flexed his fingers.

For the briefest instant, his nails darkened into sharp claws before returning to normal.

His breathing caught.

The apartment fell silent.

Then he noticed something in the window.

His reflection.

Except...

It wasn't entirely his own.

Golden eyes stared back at him.

Sharp fangs glinted beneath curled lips.

The image vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Vance closed his eyes.

The wolf was getting stronger.

He's coming.

The voice wasn't spoken aloud.

It echoed inside his mind.

---

A black pickup truck sat motionless far across the street from Elchen Hills High School.

Marcus Hale lowered a pair of binoculars.

The library lights had gone out hours ago, but the image of Vance and Lyra sitting together remained fresh in his mind.

He reached into the passenger seat and opened an old leather journal filled with sketches, dates, and handwritten notes.

Every page documented a hunt.

Every page recorded a werewolf that had never lived to see another full moon.

He stopped at the latest entry.

Unknown Male. Approximately seventeen years old. Bitten during the forest attack.

Marcus stared at the words.

"The bite should've killed you," he muttered.

Unless...

His eyes narrowed.

Unless the curse had taken hold.

He closed the journal and stepped out of the truck before walking to the back.

The tailgate dropped open.

Inside rested a weathered crossbow, a hunting knife etched with ancient symbols, coils of reinforced wire, and a case of silver-tipped bolts that gleamed beneath the moonlight.

Marcus picked up one of the bolts and ran a thumb across its polished tip.

"If you've turned..." he said quietly, "...I'll finish what I started."

He loaded the crossbow with practiced precision.

Then he looked toward the distant lights coming from Elchen Hills High school before getting back into the car and zoomed off into the woods.
