The old water tower loomed against the midnight sky like a skeletal finger pointing at the moon.

Vance stood at the base of it, his heart pounding so hard he could hear it in his ears. The wind howled through the rusted metal legs, carrying the scent of damp earth and something else. Something wild. Something familiar.

You shouldn't have come.

The voice wasn't his.

It came from inside him. The wolf. Restless. Hungry. Afraid.

Turn back. Go home. Before it's too late.

Vance ignored it.

He'd made his choice. He'd come this far. He wasn't turning back now.

"Hello, Vance."

The voice came from behind him. Smooth. Calm. Controlled.

Vance spun around.

A figure stepped out of the shadows. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Golden eyes gleaming in the darkness like twin embers.

Damien Cross.

Up close, he was even more imposing. His face was angular, weathered, marked by years of hardship. His presence radiated power—ancient, dangerous, undeniable.

"So you came," Damien said, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I wasn't sure you would."

"You left me a note," Vance said, his voice steadier than he felt. "What did you expect?"

"I expected you to be smart enough to stay away." Damien stepped closer. "And brave enough to show up anyway."

Vance didn't move. "Who are you? Really?"

Damien studied him for a long moment. Then he said, "I'm the one who bit you. I'm the one who gave you this gift."

Vance's hands balled into fists. "Gift? You ruined my life."

"No." Damien's voice was soft. "I gave you power. What you do with it is up to you."

The wolf inside Vance stirred. Recognized something in Damien. Something powerful. Something that called to the beast within.

"Look at you," Damien continued, circling him like a predator. "You're fighting yourself every second of every day. You're terrified of the wolf inside you. You're terrified of what you're becoming."

"I'm not becoming anything."

"Yes, you are." Damien stopped in front of him. "You're becoming what you were always meant to be. A wolf. An Alpha. A leader."

Vance shook his head. "I don't want to be an Alpha."

"Of course you don't." Damien's smile was sad. "You're still human. You still think you have a choice."

"I do have a choice."

"Do you?" Damien's eyes flickered gold. "The hunters are closing in, Vance. Marcus Hale knows who you are. He knows what you are. He's coming for you."

Vance's blood ran cold. "How do you know that?"

"I know everything that happens in this town." Damien's voice was low. "I've been watching you. Waiting for you to realize the truth."

"What truth?"

"That you can't run from what you are." Damien stepped closer. "You can only embrace it."

Vance stared at him, his heart pounding.

The wolf inside him howled.

Damien's voice was soft, almost gentle. "I know you're scared. I know you're confused. But I can help you. I can teach you to control the wolf. To use it. To become stronger than you ever imagined."

"What do you want from me?"

Damien was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I want you to understand."

"Understand what?"

Damien's eyes flickered with something dark. Painful. "I was like you once. Young. Afraid. Alone. I didn't ask for this life either."

Vance's throat tightened. "What happened to you?"

Damien looked up at the moon. His voice was barely a whisper.

"The Hales happened."

---

The words hung in the air like smoke.

Damien's voice was distant, hollow, like he was speaking from somewhere far away.

"I was eight years old," he began. "My family lived in a cabin on the edge of Elchen Hills. My father was a wolf. My mother was human. My sister was just a baby."

Vance's heart ached. He could see the pain in Damien's eyes. Raw. Unhealed.

"We were peaceful," Damien continued. "We kept to ourselves. We never hurt anyone. But the Hales didn't care."

"What did they do?"

Damien's eyes burned with ancient rage. "They burned us alive."

Vance's breath caught.

"I was playing outside," Damien said, his voice shaking. "I heard my mother screaming. I ran back to the cabin—" He stopped. Swallowed. "It was too late. The fire was everywhere. I could smell their flesh burning. I could hear my sister's cries—"

He stopped.

Vance stared at him, his heart pounding.

Damien turned to face him. His eyes were wet. "I was eight years old, Vance. I watched my family burn to death. And the Hales stood there and watched. Marcus Hale. Eliana Hale. They didn't just let it happen. They made it happen."

"That's not—"

"It's the truth." Damien's voice was fierce. "They hunt us like animals. They kill us without mercy. They believe we're monsters. And yet—" He stepped closer. "We're more human than they'll ever be."

Vance wanted to argue. Wanted to deny it.

But the look in Damien's eyes made him freeze.

It wasn't anger he saw.

It was grief. Pure, raw, unbearable grief.

"I've been alone for twenty years," Damien whispered. "I've been running. Hiding. Surviving. I built a pack of my own—broken wolves, lost souls, children who were bitten and abandoned. I gave them a home. I gave them family."

His voice cracked. "And the Hales took it all away from me."

Vance shook his head. "I don't understand. Why are you telling me this?"

Damien met his eyes. "Because you're like me, Vance. You're alone. You're scared. You're fighting a war you didn't ask for. But you don't have to fight alone."

He extended his hand.

"Join me," he said. "Let me teach you. Let me help you become the Alpha you were meant to be."

Vance stared at his hand. The wolf inside him was screaming.

Take it. Take it. He's offering everything you need.

But another voice—quieter, but stronger—whispered: This is wrong.

"Join me," Damien repeated. "And we'll take back everything they stole from us."

Vance's hands trembled. "I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't want to be a monster."

Damien's expression softened. "Being a wolf doesn't make you a monster. Being a hunter does."

"I can't kill people, Damien. I can't—"

"Who said anything about killing?" Damien stepped closer. "I'm not asking you to become a murderer. I'm asking you to become a protector. To stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves."

Vance stared at him.

"You're not like Marcus Hale," Damien continued. "You're not cold. You're not cruel. You're just—lost." His voice was almost kind. "I can help you find your way."

The wolf inside Vance fell silent.

Damien held his gaze. "I know you're scared. I know you're confused. But I also know you're stronger than you think. You just need someone to believe in you."

Vance looked at Damien's hand.

He wanted to take it.

He wanted to stop running. Stop hiding. Stop being afraid.

But then he thought of Lyra.

Her smile. Her laugh. The way she'd looked at him like he was just a normal boy.

If I join Damien, I'll lose her. I'll become the monster her father thinks I am.

"No." Vance's voice was firm. "I can't."

Damien's eyes flickered with disappointment. "Vance—"

"I said no." Vance stepped back. "I appreciate the offer. I really do. But I won't become a killer. Not for you. Not for anyone."

Damien studied him for a long moment.

Then he nodded slowly. "I see."

"You're not going to force me?"

"No." Damien's voice was sad. "I won't force you. But I want you to remember this conversation."

Vance frowned. "Remember what?"

Damien stepped closer. "When the hunters come for you—and they will—remember that I offered you a way out. Remember that I gave you a choice."

Vance's heart pounded. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying—" Damien's eyes flickered gold. "—that you're going to need help. And when you do, I'll be here. Waiting."

The wind howled through the tower.

Vance felt the wolf stir inside him. Restless. Hungry.

Damien vanished into the shadows, his voice echoing in the darkness: "Think about it, Vance. The moon will rise again. And when it does, you'll be ready."

Vance stood alone in the darkness, his heart pounding.

The wolf howled inside him.

And for the first time in his life, Vance didn't know what to do.

---

He walked back to his apartment in a daze.

His mind was spinning. Damien's words echoed in his ears, over and over again.

They burned us alive.

The Hales didn't just let it happen. They made it happen.

You're going to need help.

Vance collapsed onto his bed, staring at the ceiling.

Damien's offer had been tempting. So tempting. The promise of power. The promise of control. The promise of never being alone again.

But Vance had said no.

Because he remembered Lyra.

He remembered her smile. Her laugh. The way she'd looked at him like he was just a normal boy.

I can't become a monster. Not for her. Not for anyone.

His phone buzzed.

Lyra: Hey. I couldn't sleep. You up?

Vance stared at the screen, his heart aching.

Vance: Yeah. I'm up.

Lyra: Everything okay?

Vance: I don't know.

Lyra: I'm here if you need to talk.

He smiled despite everything.

Vance: I know. That's what scares me.

Lyra: What do you mean?

He wanted to tell her. Wanted to tell her everything.

But how could he? How could he tell the girl he loved that he was a monster?

I'll tell you soon. I promise.

Vance: Nothing. Just tired. Goodnight, Lyra.

Lyra: Goodnight, Vance.

He put down the phone and stared at the ceiling.

The wolf inside him stirred. Restless. Hungry.

You made a mistake, it whispered. You should have taken his offer.

"Maybe," Vance whispered. "But I'm not a monster. Not yet."

You will be.

"Maybe. But not tonight."

The moon shone through the window.

Vance closed his eyes.

He knew he couldn't run forever.

But for tonight, he'd hold onto what little humanity he had left.

---

In the shadows of Elchen Hills, Damien Cross watched the town below.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown: The boy is awake. He's thinking about your offer.

Damien smiled. "Of course he is."

Unknown: What's the next move?

Damien looked up at the moon.

"Patience," he whispered. "He'll come to us. They always do."

Unknown: The Hales are getting closer. Marcus is already hunting him.

"Let him," Damien said. "The more desperate the boy becomes, the more willing he'll be to accept our help."

Unknown: And if he refuses?

Damien's eyes flickered gold.

"Then we'll make him an offer he can't refuse."

He closed the phone and looked toward the town below.

The war was coming.

And Vance Rourke would be at the center of it.

Whether he liked it or not.

The bathroom tiles were ice beneath Vance's knees. He barely reached the restroom before collapsing beside the sink, his chest rising and falling in frantic gasps.
