The agony of childbirth was just beginning to fade. Then the door to my top-floor suite in the medical center slammed open.

My mate, Cade, stood there, his anger barely contained.

"That's enough, Evelyn." His voice was low and cold. "You’re threatening to reject our bond just because I missed our anniversary dinner? And you dragged Kenna into this?"

I lay on the bed, so weak I could barely lift my head.

Three days.

I hadn't seen my Alpha in three days, not since that nightmare of a night.

"Why can't you be more understanding, like Lilah?" Cade walked toward the bed, completely ignoring my pale face. "The pack is facing challenges on all fronts. The mines, the biotech firm... You have no idea the pressure I'm under."

Tears streamed down my face.

Understanding? He wanted me to be understanding? He abandoned me while I was dying to play vet to Lilah's damn dog.

"Crying again." Cade turned away, annoyed. "Evelyn, can't you be more mature? I've already sent the guards to investigate the package. It was just a prank. Some low-life Rogue trying to get a rise out of us. As Luna, you shouldn't fall apart like this. Or faking a premature birth just for attention."

I closed my eyes, the horror of that night washing over me again.

Just before our anniversary dinner, the bloody package arrived. The feral Rogue scent hit me like a physical blow. The pup inside me sensed the threat. He began to thrash violently.

The pain nearly tore me in two.

I screamed for Cade through our mind-link. "Cade… help me… the baby…"

His only reply was a furious snarl. "You’re faking this just because I missed our anniversary? Lilah’s rare silver hound is giving birth, and it’s dangerous. Don’t cause trouble for me now!"

He cut the mind-link.

Completely.

By the time Kenna burst in, I was already unconscious in a pool of my own blood.

She exhausted her wolf’s spirit to stabilize me.

I lived. But my child…

"Kenna contacted Rhys," I whispered, my voice trembling. "The baby needed 'Moonflower Dew'…"

"Lilah's hound is weak after giving birth. I’m busy making a special formula for it." Rhys's voice came through the phone, cold and impatient. "You and Evelyn are two of a kind. First her drama, now yours. Can you two do anything besides stir up trouble for us?"

My child died.

The prophesied heir—destined to be the strongest Alpha—was dead. All because his own father didn't care.

"Are you even listening to me?" Cade’s voice pulled me back. He was clearly furious at my tears.

"I'm not here to listen to you cry. I'm here to tell you this childish threat ends now."

"That silver hound's bloodline is priceless," he went on, his tone hardening. "There are only three pure-bloods in all of North America. I had to be there. This is about the future of our entire race!"

I stared at him.

The future of our race. But not our son.

"Faking Moon Eclipse Sickness to get me to stay with you is one thing, but pulling this stunt at the medical center? This little act won't work on me." Cade turned away in disgust. "Do you have any idea how exhausted Lilah is? She hasn't slept in three days taking care of that hound. Meanwhile, you're lounging in the best suite in the medical center."

He paused, his voice turning to ice. "Pack your things and get out. This suite is for someone who actually needs it."

Cade was the Alpha. He ran this medical center.

All he had to do was ask a single healer, and he’d know I was telling the truth.

But he wouldn't even waste one minute on me. He’d already decided I was a liar.

I stared at him silently as my tears flowed freely.

The next second, Kenna appeared in the doorway. She had been with me for days.

She radiated the power of a warrior, her eyes burning with rage.

Kenna strode right to my bed and ripped the thin blanket off me.

My flat stomach was exposed to the cold air. The place that once held our hope.

"An act?" Her voice cracked like a whip. "What is there for a mother who just lost her child to act about?"

She turned on Cade, her gaze like a knife. "Your heir is dead. Are you happy now, Cade?!"

The heavy doors of the Council Hall boomed shut, sealing us inside the Sanctum of Severance. The chamber was cold and empty. The stage was set for the final act.The Elder stood behind the altar, his ancient eyes seeming to absorb the moonlight. "The moon is at its zenith," his voice echoed. "The time has come to finish what was started. This ritual will purge the last remnants of the soul-bond. It will be absolute. Do you have any last words?"Rhys, his pride shattered, looked desperately at Kenna."Kenna, please... let's start over, okay?""Start over?" Kenna's laugh was sharp in the dead silence. "Rhys, do you really think you can start over after a betrayal like that?""I didn't betray you!" he argued weakly. "I was just... I was deceived...""Deceived?" Kenna's voice grew colder. "When our pup's life depended on Moonflower Dew, you were mixing supplements for Lilah's dog. Was that not a betrayal?"Rhys opened his mouth, but no words came out."When Evelyn was dying, you said she

The first call came just after midnight.Kenna answered. An excited voice burst through the speaker."Kenna! You did it! The Northern Alliance Alphas just held an emergency meeting! They saw everything!"I sat up, my heart pounding."And?" Kenna asked."They're furious! The Silver Moon Alpha immediately went on the PackNet and publicly tore up all treaties with the Dark Moon pack. He said, 'An Alpha who can't even protect his own heir and shelters a murderer isn't worthy of an alliance'! The Iron Claw pack also announced they're pulling all their warriors from the Dark Moon mines and terminating the Moonstone trade agreement!"The voice grew more excited. "More packs are following! They're saying Cade is compromised, that he can't separate his personal feelings from his duty! They're saying his position as Alpha is unstable!"Kenna and I exchanged a look of grim satisfaction. For the next few hours, the PackNet was in an uproar. The scandal of Cade protecting a murderer was the headlin

"Get out." My voice was ice. "Get out of my house.""Evelyn, let me explain..."SLAM!I slammed the door and locked it, leaving him on the other side.I heard him pounding on the door. "Evelyn! Open the door! We can talk about this!"I walked to the bedroom and ignored him.Kenna watched me, her eyes full of sympathy. "Are you okay?""I'm fine," I said, my voice dead calm. "I see everything clearly now."The next morning, the doorbell rang.It wasn't Cade. It was a servant in a black uniform."Lady Evelyn, this is the Deepsea Moonglow fish Alpha Cade ordered for you. It was just flown in from the Eastern Isles. It’s said to soothe a wolf’s spirit."I glanced at the shimmering fish, then shut the door in his face."Throw it out," I told Kenna. At noon, a Hundred-Year Ice Lotus from the Snowpeak Mountains arrived."A holy relic for healing female wolves. The Alpha said you would like it."I refused it.In the afternoon, it was Elven Berries from the Old Continent. At night, a priceless b

The memory crystal shattered on the stone, exploding in a shower of spectral blue light that pulsed in the air.Shocking images flickered to life. There was Lilah, standing in a dark basement, a cattle prod in her hand.A half-dozen emaciated Omega wolves were chained to the walls with rune-etched irons, their bodies covered in wounds."Bad dogs need to be punished." Lilah's voice was cold, cruel. "You filthy half-breeds aren't even worthy of being lab rats."She flicked the switch. Blue electricity arced across the prod.A young Omega cried out in agony."Please... we haven't eaten in three days..." a female Omega begged."Better if you starve," Lilah sneered. "Your existence is a waste of air."The scene shifted.Lilah was instructing one of her men. "Send this package to the bitch. And make sure it's covered in Rogue scent.""Miss, what if they find out...""They won't," Lilah said, her eyes glinting with malice. "The stupid cow is pregnant. She'll never withstand a Rogue threat. The shards of Cade’s shattered phone glinted on the stone steps. He collapsed right onto the sharp edges."No... impossible..." His voice was a choked whisper. "My heir... my son..."I watched him, feeling nothing but cold emptiness.A terrifying calm settled over me. "You know now?""It's too late, Cade."He snapped his head up, his eyes swimming with despair and regret. "Evelyn, I'm sorry. I didn't know... I thought you were lying... I'm so sorry..."Kenna let out a bitter laugh. "If 'sorry' was enough, what would we need Pack Law for?"I turned my back on him and walked toward Maya's car. I couldn't stand the sight of him.Cade stumbled to his feet, trying to follow. "Evelyn, let me come with you... he's my son, too...""You have no right." My voice sliced through his hope. "You stopped being his father the moment he needed that Moonflower Dew and you weren't there."Maya started the car as Kenna and I got in.In the rearview mirror, I saw Cade and Rhys get into another car.And Lil

Cade’s voice in the mind-link turned cold and furious."Vicious," he snarled. "How can your jealousy run so deep you'd curse our own son? How could you say something like that?"I stared into the darkness, my heart pounding."Curse him?" I trembled through the link. "Cade, he was our son! How could I ever curse him?""You're cursing him right now!" Cade's voice dripped with disgust. "Saying he's dead? That you almost died? Your jealousy has made you insane, Evelyn!"My heart broke into a million pieces. He didn't even believe our son was dead."Fine." My voice was terrifyingly calm. "Cade, I'm giving you one last chance.""What?""Be at the Elders' council tomorrow with Rhys and agree to the rejection," each word was an icicle. "Or I will expose your affair with Lilah to the entire Northern Pack Alliance."There was dead silence on the link.A few seconds later, Cade's panicked voice returned. "You can't do that!""Why not?" I sneered. "It's the truth, isn't it?""That would destroy he
