“I don’t understand.” I whispered before I could stop myself, and I hated how desperate my voice sounded.
I should be used to the sting of rejection, but for some reason this one hit hard.
He cleared his throat, his eyes searching as he looked for the man beside him and then to me, my confusion evident.
“There’s no reason to be confused.” He said, dragging air into his lungs. “What we are going to have is not a marriage, neither is it the romance that comes from being mated by the moon goddess.” He explained.
I stayed mute, patiently waiting for him to drive the nail home. “I need heirs, and you’re going to give them to me.” He said, an order not a plea.
I scoffed, folding my hands beneath my breasts. “Why should I agree to this?” I asked.
It was both courageous and reckless to question the Alpha King, but at that moment I didn’t care. He could behead me if he wanted.
“You need protection…” he paused, gaining a nod of agreement from the man I was yet to place a title on. “You need to be kept away from that young alpha and the hundreds of guards who are after you.”
“Or do you think he’s going to stop? You are clearly valuable to him.” He pointed out and my eyes fell to the ground.
I never thought I’d hear the word “valuable” used in the same sentence as me. But he wasn’t wrong, Duncan was after me and going back out there would be handing myself to him on a platter.
I took a deep breath weighing my options and trying to understand the severity of his request. I’d be tied down here forever with no love and the only thing binding us together would be nothing but children.
Well it was high time I gave up on love….
“You’re right.” I muttered, holding his gaze, my fists tightening at my sides. “You need heirs. I need protection.”
He nodded, relief glistening in his eyes. At least I was wanted for something I could provide and not for who I was.
“So do we have a deal?” He asked.
I took another deep breath, staring into space and taking the time to think for myself.
“I have one condition.” I announced, unfazed by the scrutiny of his piercing gaze.
“I refuse to spend another day in a man’s territory without a mark to my name.” I said, my voice firm.
I watched him exchange a glance with the other man. “Thor, leave us.” He ordered and the man bobbed his head and walked out the door immediately.
The king waited until the sound of his footsteps faded before continuing. “You make demands like you’re doing me a favor by agreeing to this. Meanwhile, we both have something to gain.” He said, his tone rising.
I swallowed hard, refusing to back down. “I’ve seen what happens to a woman with no standing, three years I witnessed it and I refuse to go through that again.”
He sighed, dropping his chin into his palm. “Fine.” He growled. “I’ll have the pack gathered tonight and then I shall mark you before them.”
I nodded, a smile tugging at my lips. For the first time in a really long time I felt exonerated. “Then we have a deal, Your Majesty.” I replied.
After that, I was dismissed and I walked out of the throne room trying my best to recall the path the maid led me through before frantically abandoning me.
Slowly but surely, I found my way back to the room.
I took my time to finally look at it, it was small and most of the space was taken up by a large wooden bed.
At the other end of the room was a wooden vanity, and a closet. That was it. But it was still more than what Duncan had ever given me.
I dropped into the bed, letting the exhaustion of the day claim me and soon I drifted off into a much needed sleep.
I don’t know how much time had passed but I woke up to a soft knock on the door. I sat up, my body aching as I did. “Come in.” I whispered.
The door opened and the same maid from earlier walked in. “Sorry to disturb you my lady but the king has requested you to introduce yourself to the rest of the pack.” She explained.
Our deal!
I threw the covers off and got out of bed immediately. One glance in the mirror told me the loose sundress would have to do, even if it wasn’t exactly first-impression material.
She led me to what I believed was the living room and then out the front door.
The alpha king stood at the steps and just below it was a crowd of wolves both young and old, ranked and unranked. I joined him while the maid joined the rest of the people.
“Without wasting any more time.” He announced, clearing his throat. He shifted his gaze to me and I forced a smile trying to shake off the anxiety. “This is my mate, Amanda Patrick from the Moonstone pack.” He announced and murmurs erupted in the air.
Was there something about my pack that I didn’t know?
“His mate is from that vile pack?” I heard someone say.
“How do we accept such a wolf as our Luna?” Another said.
“Silence before King Ambrose!” Thor called out from within the crowd and they all went quiet immediately but I could still feel the tension in the air.
The King cleared his throat, grabbing all attention to himself once again. “Before you all, I’d like to mark her as mine….bound my the moon goddess and the one who would bring me heirs.”
He grabbed my wrist and before I knew it, he sank his teeth into it. But the burn flared at my neck, not where he bit. I knew instantly what it meant.
I’d been marked… by the Alpha King and our deal had been sealed.
Ambrose“Who is it?” I asked impatiently. Thor held the picture between his fingers for a long time, long enough that the silence in the throne room started to press against my chest, before he finally lifted his eyes to meet mine.“My lord.” he whispered, and his voice came out quieter than I’d ever heard it, the kind of quiet that meant he was about to tell me something he’d carried for years and never thought he would ever have to say out loud. “There’s a story my father told me when I was still a teenager and thought I knew everything about this castle.”Thor’s father was the old king’s personal guard, one who stayed by his side all his thirty years of ruling so Thor has spent more time than I have in this castle. I didn’t move or say anything and just waited for him to.He swallowed hard and kept going, his thumb brushing over the edge of the picture like he wasn’t even aware he was doing it. “Like you know, he was the former king’s personal guard, and he told me that the form
AmbroseThe next morning, I woke up before the sun came out.The castle was still quiet in that heavy way it gets before dawn, when even the servants hadn’t started moving and the only sound was the wind dragging itself across the stone walls. It was kind of eerie for the feeble mind but my body was used to it. I was extremely tired, it’s been so long since I’ve had a break or a long moment of peace but it doesn’t matter when you’re king. Over five years of ruling teaches you how to function on four hours of sleep and cold tea.Amanda was still asleep when I left my chambers to go check on her, in case she wakes up and starts searching for me so I didn’t bother to disturb her. Orion and Castora were breathing in that soft, steady rhythm that made me feel guilty for how little I’d been around them lately. I closed the door softly because Amanda needed the rest and she’d been carrying enough without me adding to it.I told myself my chore for the morning was going to the old persona
Amanda“What have you heard?“ Ambrose asked, his eyes devoid of anything but the tiredness in them. I frowned, taking another step closer. “Answer the question, Ambrose. Is she actually free?” I fumed, my patience slipping away. Before he could say a word, Thor bobbed his head and they both shared a glance before he walked away. He wanted to give us some privacy but privacy was the last thing I cared about at the moment. All I wanted was some answers. “Our men are searching for her.” He exhaled. I shook my head, laughing softly in disbelief. “So it’s true? Ambrose how did this happen?” I cried, my heart beat racing in my chest.“Amanda.” He coughed. “Do not concern yourself with unnecessary details, you should be resting.” He pointed out, barely looking at me like I was some stranger and not worth his time.“How can I rest when someone so dangerous is out there? It could even be worse if she’s reunited with Duncan.” I pressed on, trying to make him aware of our problems if he didn
AmandaI turned back around immediately and walked into the room faster than I had left it, my hands still shaking at my sides. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat, because what exactly did they mean by “Jane escaped”?How on earth would that be possible? Ambrose promised me. It didn’t make sense. The guards had her, they had weapons and they had enough men to safely transport her to the grand prison. And yet she was out there now, somewhere beyond these walls with no bounds and no one watching her. The thought of it made my stomach turn.“That was fast...” Nyra said when I came in, and then she stopped the second she saw my face. Her smile dropped. “Your majesty, what is the matter?” She asked, her voice went soft with worry, the way it did when she thought I was going to faint again.I couldn’t tell her. If I did, the guards who let it slip would be punished and I didn’t need any blood on my hands today because I know Duncan won’t hesitate to have their
Duncan“Thor.” I whispered. It was Thor’s voice and I knew I wasn’t mistaken. It was being carried through the trees from wherever he was but I knew he was close enough because the hair on the back of my neck stood up just at the mere thought of getting caught by him.The fact that I have to live in fear is still something I have to get used to. If Thor was here, then it meant Ambrose’s men weren’t far behind him. They were closer than I had let myself believe they could be.“We’re surrounded, get down.” I whispered, and kept my voice low enough that only the two men directly behind me would hear it clearly. Then they passed it back to the other men in nods and hand signals, and one by one we all sank to the ground.“Surrounded by who?” I heard one of them whisper. The dirt was cold under my palms and it smelled like wet leaves and old blood. But I didn’t move, none of us did, we could not afford what would happen if we did. We just lay there with our mouths shut and our eyes op
AmandaMy pups are the most perfect creatures to ever grace the world. I can’t forget the feeling of turning around after that slumber I was forced into after birth to see them laying beside me on the bed, it was the best. I sat up in bed, holding the boy in my arms while the girl slept peacefully beside me and soon, there was a knock on the door. Nyra walked in with a cup of tea and some hot porridge. “Good morning my Luna.” She greeted, with a huge smile on her face. I smiled back, my eyes barely touching her do more than a second before returning to the pup in my hand. “Please just leave the food on the table, I’ll eat when I’m done with the baby.” I replied. She shook her head, “no your majesty, you have to eat the food while it’s hot. It’s what your system needs.” She stated. “I’ll hold him.” She stretched forth her arms a reluctantly, I handed the baby over to her. After that I picked up the tray of food and began to eat. “You and the king haven’t decided names for the pups
Amanda's POV I began to run without needing to be told. With all the men walking toward Duncan’s room, I knew that staying in the pack would be my undoing. Every step felt heavy with urgency, my heart hammering in my chest as adrenaline burned through my veins.“Because I kept you by my side all t
Amanda's POV “What did you just say?” Duncan demanded, finally standing from the bed, hastily dressing as if the words I had just spoken had jolted him out of the spell Kattie had wrapped him in. Even Kattie froze, eyes wide in shock. Before, I had always clung to Duncan, never wanting to let him
Amanda's POV I walked toward Duncan’s door, determined to meet him. There were so many things I needed to discuss, countless questions I had and I couldn’t simply stay back in my room and listen anymore. I was not going to allow him to get away with this without an actual explanation.“I'm sorry,
Amanda's POV My mate was being coronated as the alpha of the pack today, and for reasons I couldn’t fully name, a cold unease gnawed at me. This should have been a day of pride and triumph. Duncan had worked for this, and I had stood by him, sacrificed and bled alongside him, to make him worthy o
