Kael's POV

I sit outside her door for three hours.

Not moving. Not thinking. Just sitting with the question she left me holding like a blade I'd handed her myself.

Would I make the same choice?

The honest answer had risen in my throat and stopped there. Because even now, even knowing everything . . . the lies, the manipulation, the cost . . . I couldn't say no fast enough. And that hesitation was its own answer. One she'd already seen.

I press my back against the cold wall and close my eyes.

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 75: Toward Her

Kael's POVStone dust fills my mouth before the pain does, and for one long heartbeat I can't tell which way is up.Then the ringing hits, a single endless note that swallows every other sound, and something warm slides from my hairline into my eye. I blink it away. Above me the ceiling has torn open, half of it gone, smoke pouring through the gap where stars should be. My back is against rubble. My legs won't answer right away.Nyra.The name does what nothing else could. I roll onto my side, and pain lances through my ribs so hard I taste copper, but I push up anyway, because past the haze and the falling grit I can see her. Chained to that altar, silver light crawling up the binding circle around her, and she isn't moving.

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 74: Forbidden Magic

Dorian's POVThe circle is failing, and there is exactly one thing left in my arsenal desperate enough to stop that from happening.I've spent three days telling myself I wouldn't need it. Blood magic isn't forbidden because the old wolves were squeamish, it's forbidden because it takes more than it gives, because it doesn't ask what you're willing to pay before it starts collecting. I built this entire ritual around avoiding exactly this moment, layered safeguard after safeguard into the working so I'd never have to reach for something this raw.The stone splits wider beneath Nyra's altar, and every safeguard I built crumbles right along with it."Alpha Cross." Feren's voice again, closer now, urgent enough to cut through even the chant's rhythm. "The eastern wall, it's cracking, if this kee

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 73: The Circle Cracks

Nyra's POVThe crack beneath me isn't small anymore. It's spread since I first felt it, a thin dark seam creeping wider across the ancient stone, branching now like frost across glass, and every tremor that rolls through the sanctum since Dorian abandoned caution seems to feed it a little more. I can feel it under my palm where the chain presses my hand flat against the altar, a vibration that doesn't match the rhythm of his chant, something older and slower and entirely its own, patient in a way nothing about tonight has been."Kael," I breathe, though I don't know if the word even makes it out loud over the chaos filling the chamber, over Dorian's raised voice and the clash of bodies somewhere behind him, wolves falling and rising and falling again in the smoke-thick dark beyond the archway.

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 72: Holding the Perimeter

Mira's POVBlood loss makes wolves stupid, and I'm about two pints past the point where I should be barking orders instead of taking hits, but stopping isn't on the table tonight."Fall back to the second line!" I shout at a knot of wounded fighters stumbling out of the passage behind me, one of them dragging a leg that isn't bending right anymore. "Rotate out, let the fresh ones through, go!"The outer perimeter of the sanctum is a mess of torchlight and bodies, loyalist guards still trickling out from side passages I didn't know existed until twenty minutes ago, but we're holding. Barely. My ribs ache where a blade caught me earlier, shallow but stinging, and my arms feel like they belong to someone else after this many hours of fighting, but the line is holding, and right now that's the only thing that matters.A wolf crashes into the space beside me, and I brace for another loyalist before I recognize the tawny coat and the particular way he holds himself, coiled and precise, like

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 71: Ideologies Collide

Kael's POVThe chains around Nyra's wrists are the only thing keeping me from crossing that sanctum in a single stride, and even they won't hold me back much longer. She's looking at me across a distance that feels both impossibly short and impossibly far, chains cutting into skin that shouldn't have to bear them, and everything in me, wolf and man both, screams to close that gap and tear apart anything still standing between us. My legs actually move before my mind catches up, one step past the threshold, then another."Ah, ah," Dorian says, stepping into my path without hurry, blade still raised, the ceremonial edge of it catching torchlight in a way that makes my stomach turn. "I did offer you a choice, Alpha Draven. Watch, or participate. You seem determined to skip straight to the second option.""I'm going to skip straight to putting that blade through your chest," I say, and my voice comes out lower than I mean it to, rougher, more growl than words.Dorian's mouth curves, unbot

  • The Alpha Who Lost the Moon   Chapter 70: An Anchor

Nyra's POVThe floor moves beneath me before the sound reaches my ears, a deep grinding shudder that rattles straight up through the altar stone and into my bones, and for one disoriented second I think the ritual has already won.It hasn't. Not yet. But something in the ruins has woken up, and it isn't gentle about it.Dust sifts down from the ceiling in a fine gray curtain, catching torchlight as it falls, and Dorian's chant doesn't slow, doesn't falter, just keeps driving forward like a man too far past the point of stopping to notice the walls themselves are answering him. His voice has changed. Rougher now, doubled with something underneath it that scrapes wrong against my ears, and I understand without needing to be told that he's stopped being careful. He's pushing everything he has into this, consequences be damned.
