No one moved.

Lucien stood in the shattered doorway, his black coat covered in dust and blood.

His golden eyes were fixed on Kael.

Not Rowan.

Not Darius.

Not the crown.

Kael.

For the first time since the Moon Bond Ceremony, Lucien looked afraid.

Kael slowly rose to his feet.

“You came here.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

“I had no choice.”

A bitter smile touched Kael’s lips.

“You always have a choice.”

The words struck Lucien harder than expected.

His eyes flickered.

“I know.”

The shadow laughed.

“How amusing.”

Lucien stepped into the chamber.

“The rejected mate returns to save the heir.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know anything about us.”

“I know more than you think.”

The shadow turned toward Lucien.

“And you…”

The black eyes narrowed.

“You carry the mark of the one who rejected fate.”

Lucien’s hand closed over his burning wrist.

“What do you want?”

“Your life.”

The room went silent.

Kael’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Lucien looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because this has nothing to do with you.”

Lucien gave a quiet, humorless laugh.

“You’re wrong.”

He walked closer.

“The moment I rejected you, something changed.”

Kael said nothing.

“For years, I thought the pain was punishment for rejecting a weak omega.”

Lucien’s voice became quieter.

“I was wrong.”

He pulled back the sleeve covering his wrist.

The mate mark was no longer silver.

It was black.

Veins of darkness crawled from it toward his palm.

Lysander stared.

“That is impossible.”

Rowan looked horrified.

“The curse…”

Lucien turned toward him.

“You know what this is?”

Rowan didn’t answer.

Lucien’s eyes sharpened.

“You knew.”

Kael looked at Rowan again.

Another secret.

Another lie.

“Everyone seems to know something except me,” Kael whispered.

The crown trembled above him.

The shadow smiled.

“Because you were never meant to know.”

Kael looked up.

“Then I’ll find out myself.”

He reached toward the crown.

Rowan shouted.

“Kael, don’t!”

Kael ignored him.

His fingers touched the silver edge.

Pain exploded through his body.

He saw Lucien.

Not the Lucien from the ceremony.

A much younger boy.

Standing beside the Black Fang King.

His father placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Never trust the Moon heir.”

The scene changed.

Lucien was older.

He stood before the Moon Altar on the night of the rejection.

But behind his cold expression was something else.

Fear.

His father had whispered:

“If you accept him, Black Fang will declare war.”

Lucien looked at Kael.

Then at the glowing mark.

He whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

The vision vanished.

Kael’s eyes opened.

Lucien was staring at him.

“You didn’t reject me because you hated me.”

Lucien’s expression cracked.

“No.”

“Then why?”

Lucien looked toward the Black Fang symbol on his coat.

“Because my father threatened to kill you.”

Kael froze.

The crown released a pulse of silver light.

Darius stepped backward.

Rowan closed his eyes.

And the shadow whispered:

“Now you understand.”

Kael stared at Lucien.

“You knew my identity?”

“No.”

“Then why did he want me dead?”

Lucien hesitated.

“Because your father was the reason his family feared the Moon Kingdom.”

Kael’s heart sank.

“My father?”

Lucien nodded.

“Your father wasn’t simply a king.”

The shadow’s voice echoed through the chamber.

“He was the one who broke the first pact.”

The crown suddenly cracked.

A deafening roar shook the sanctuary.

The silver floor split beneath Kael.

Something enormous moved beneath the ruins.

Lysander raised his sword.

“Everyone back!”

Too late.

A massive black claw burst through the floor.

Kael stumbled.

Lucien grabbed him around the waist and pulled him away just as the creature erupted from beneath the crown chamber.

Its body was covered in black scales.

Its eyes burned crimson.

And around its neck hung the symbol of the Crimson Court.

Darius stared at the creature in disbelief.

“No…”

Rowan whispered:

“The Crimson Beast.”

The creature opened its enormous jaws.

Then it spoke in a human voice.

“Finally.”

Its eyes locked onto Kael.

“The last Moon heir has returned.”

And then—

It smiled.

Pain tore through his wrists, and the unfamiliar symbols carved into the stone beneath him flashed white. “Lucien!”Kael's scream followed the Alpha into the darkness. The black chain dragged Lucien across the broken floor, its links burning with the same five-circle symbol that had appeared on his chest. Lucien fought against it, his boots carving deep marks into the stone, but every movement only made the chain tighten.Kael refused to let go.His fingers locked around Lucien's wrist.“I'm not losing you!”Aurelian glanced over his shoulder.“You already have.”He closed his fist. The chain jerked.Lucien's hand slipped from Kael's grasp. For one terrible instant, their fingers remained connected by nothing more than their fingertips. Then they separated.Kael lunged forward, but Caelan caught him around the waist.“Let me go!”“Kael, stop!”“HE'S TAKING HIM!”“And if you follow him like this, you'll die before you reach the door!”Kael struck his brother's arm.Caelan released him immediately.Kael stumbled forward, ready to chase Aurelian, but the stranger had already reached the shat

Kael could not look away from the figure beyond the mountains. It had Lucien's face. The same sharp jaw. The same dark hair. The same cruelly beautiful eyes that had once watched Kael stand alone beneath the full moon while an entire kingdom laughed at his rejection. But the figure wore no crown. It did not need one.The world itself seemed to bend around it.“That's impossible,” Lucien whispered. He had managed to stand, though his legs trembled. One hand remained pressed against his chest, where the five interlocking circles glowed beneath his skin.Kael turned toward him.“Do you know who that is?”Lucien shook his head.“No.”His answer came too quickly.Kael noticed. So did the boy standing beside him.“You're lying,” the child said.Lucien's gaze snapped toward him.“Be careful what you accuse me of.”The boy laughed bitterly.“You always say that when you remember something you don't want anyone else to know.”Lucien went still.Kael looked between them.“What does that mean?”

“Too late.”The child's voice echoed through the fortress. It came from beneath the floor, from behind the walls, and from somewhere deep inside Kael's own chest. For one terrible moment, nobody moved. Then Lucien screamed. He fell to his knees, both hands pressed against his chest. Black veins spread from his heart toward his throat, forming the same ancient symbols that had appeared on Kael's palm.Kael dropped beside him.“Lucien! Look at me!”The Alpha's body convulsed. His wolf roared, but the sound was wrong. It was not the furious cry of a creature fighting for control. It was the desperate howl of something being dragged away from its owner.Kael gripped Lucien's shoulders.“Fight it!”Lucien lifted his head. His eyes were black, but a thin silver ring remained around each pupil.“I am trying.”His voice sounded strained, almost distant.“Kael, listen to me. If I lose control again, you have to—”“No.”“Let me finish.”“No!” Kael shouted. “I have spent my entire life being tol

Azrael was smiling. Not the cruel smile of a conqueror who had finally defeated his enemies. Not the satisfied smile of a prisoner who had escaped centuries of confinement. It was the smile of a father who had just heard his daughter remember him.And somehow, that made it more terrifying.“Say it again,” he whispered.Elara stood trembling in the middle of the chamber. Black tears ran down her cheeks, but the silver in her eyes burned brighter with every passing second.“Mother killed me before I was born.”Elaris took a step toward her.“No, my little moon. You don't understand what you remember.”Elara screamed.“Don't call me that!”The force of her voice shattered the remaining windows. Glass exploded outward, scattering across the courtyard below. The voice came from beyond the sealed doors. And every person in the chamber recognized it.Even those who had never heard it before.Elaris.The woman Azrael claimed Seraphine had murdered. The woman whose face haunted Kael's visions. The woman who had warned him not to trust Elara. And now she was coming for her daughter.Elara stood frozen beneath the ancient symbol glowing on her forehead. Then she smiled. It was not the frightened smile of a little girl who had just awakened from twenty years of imprisonment. It was the smile of someone who had finally heard the words she had waited centuries to hear.“Mother,” she whispered. The sealed doors shuddered.Seraphine lunged toward her.“No! Whatever you hear, do not answer her!”Elara's smile disappeared.“Why?”“Because that is not your mother!”A deafening crash shook the fortress. The doors split down the middle.Silver mist poured through the opening, crawling across the floor like living water. The temperature dropped so sharply
