Chapter 4

Author: The Restrained
The kingdom's award ceremony was set for the night of the full moon next month.

Brad texted me three days prior, insisting I "had to attend".

I didn't bother replying, but I went anyway. Not for him, but because Dorian was the pack's sole A+-tier candidate and had to receive his award on stage.

The venue was packed to the brim with Alphas and key figures from every pack across the kingdom.

Brad sat dead center with a Full Moon brooch—a symbol of exceptional pack performance—pinned to his chest.

When he took the stage to speak, his voice was deep and steady, every single word sounding meticulously rehearsed.

"…I thank the Moon Goddess for her blessing, the kingdom for its support, and above all, my family. It was their quiet sacrifices behind the scenes that allowed me to devote myself wholeheartedly to caring for the next generation of pups in the pack. It can be said that the Ravenstone pack's achievements this time…"

A Luna from a neighboring pack recognized me from the audience. "You're Laila, right? Brad is truly remarkable. Being bonded to him must be a dream."

I offered a faint smile without a word.

When Brad wrapped up his speech, the Alpha King stepped onto the platform to make an official announcement.

Under Brad's leadership, the Ravenstone pack had performed exceptionally well in the coming-of-age trial, earning a spot on the shortlist to be promoted to a major pack.

The hall erupted in thunderous applause.

Brad bowed gracefully from the stage, scanning the crowd until his eyes locked with mine.

He gave me a subtle nod. The gesture was so natural, as if nothing had ever gone wrong between us.

Dorian sat beside me with his head lowered, his hands resting quietly on his knees. He never clapped.

Shortly after, Torak squeezed through the crowd and leaned in with a whisper. "Luna Laila, the kingdom's evaluation panel will be interviewing family members soon. Alpha Brad asks for your cooperation."

Dorian overheard and turned to me. "Do we have to go along with this?"

I shook my head.

"Good," Dorian said softly. "I'm done compromising anyway."

After the ceremony concluded, the kingdom's evaluation panel invited us into a reception room.

A female inspector from the panel turned to me. "We noticed Alpha Brad was voted the most trusted Alpha among the pack's pups. Is he just as devoted and dutiful at home?"

Before I could open my mouth, Vivian walked in, bringing Finlyn with her.

It turned out Brad had invited them too.

The moment she saw the panel, her eyes welled up with tears, and her voice trembled with emotion. "Inspectors, I'm a single mother, and my son owes everything to Brad's painstaking care. He is truly the most responsible Alpha I have ever known…"

Finlyn stood silently by her side with his head down.

The inspectors nodded, jotting down notes on their pads. A faint, subtle look of satisfaction crossed Brad's face.

Out of nowhere, Dorian spoke up. "Yeah. Alpha Brad is exceptionally good to Finlyn. So good that anyone out of the loop would think Finlyn was actually his son."

The room went dead silent.

Tears were still trapped on Vivian's eyelashes. Brad's face turned instantly to ash.

The female inspector's pen froze midair as her gaze darted between Dorian and Brad.

I didn't offer a single word of explanation. I just took Dorian by the hand and turned to walk out.

As we reached the door, I could hear Brad frantically trying to patch things up behind us. "Dorian just came of age. He's going through a rebellious phase. We had a bit of a disagreement right before coming here…"

The investigation results were soon finalized. The charges against Brad for leaking confidential exam materials were substantiated, proving a breach of pack law and the Alpha Code. The Elders' Council ruled to strip him of his Alpha status, demoting him to an ordinary member of the pack and broadcasting the verdict to the entire pack. The day the news broke, the pack was in an uproar.Old grievances resurfaced across the pack. "No wonder my son's annual ranking took a sudden dive that year. Finlyn had the test questions in advance!"Others scoffed. "Brad kept preaching about treating every pup equally, but everything was just staged to serve Finlyn?""I knew something felt off all along," another chimed in. "Why should an outsider's kid get exclusive, one-on-one Alpha training?"Agnes didn't make a scene this time. Word was that she couldn't even raise her head in front of the pack anymore. That very day marked 30 days since Morgan had handed me the contract.I signed my name.

While sifting through the evidence against Brad, I stumbled upon a detail I had previously overlooked.Among the study materials Brad had prepared for Finlyn were three sets of tactical practice exams. The questions themselves were unremarkable, but the timestamps caught my attention. They were dated two full months prior to the official pack trial. Before the trial, those materials were classified at the highest level of secrecy. As the pack's Alpha, Brad naturally had early access to the exams. My hands hovered in midair. He had leaked the test materials to Finlyn ahead of time. This was no longer a matter of mere favoritism. This was a violation of pack law.I brought the evidence straight to Morgan. After reviewing the documents, Morgan removed his glasses. "If this holds true, Brad will be stripped of his position as Alpha."Stripping his status meant losing his title, his authority, and everything he stood for. He would be left with nothing.I hesitated. Not out of ling

I walked into the Elders' Council Hall carrying the system logs and the appeal letter.Aside from Morgan, who already knew everything, the faces of the other Elders shifted through a spectrum of shock as they read through the documents."An Alpha tampering with his own pup's academy choice… This is unprecedented in the history of our kingdom's werewolf packs."They pored over the system logs three separate times and called the Ministry of Education to double-check the server records."We will initiate an official inquiry. In the meantime, Dorian's early admission status will be frozen."That afternoon, Brad's calls came flooding in—17 missed calls, one after another.I didn't answer a single one.His 18th call went to Dorian's phone. Dorian took one look at the caller ID and flipped his phone to silent. The next day, Brad went to Morgan to beg for leniency.Morgan had practically watched Brad grow up, yet he refused even to meet him this time.On the third day, Vivian called

After leaving the Elders' Council Hall, I dialed a number I hadn't called in ten years. It belonged to Professor Sonne Wade, my former instructor, who was now the kingdom's minister of education. His daughter, Lilith Wade, had been my classmate. During a field trial years ago, I had saved her life."Laila?" Sonne's voice carried a hint of surprise."Professor, I need your help."Choking back tears, I laid out the truth of everything that had happened.Sonne remained silent for a long time after I finished. "Laila, tampering with application choices is a severe offense. Save all your evidence first, and follow my lead."First thing the next morning, I rushed to the Ministry of Education. With Sonne's assistance, I retrieved the complete system logs. Then, I began a thorough audit of our joint account's history. That initial 280 thousand dollars was merely the tip of the iceberg.Over the past five years, under the guise of "training expenses", "subsidies for underprivileged pu

A few days later, Dorian received a phone call. It was from the local combat academy of the Ravenstone pack. "Congratulations, Dorian. You have been granted early admission to our academy."Dorian froze, terror instantly draining the color from his face. He turned to look at me. "I never submitted an application to them."I grabbed the phone. "Is there some kind of mistake?""Ma'am, we don't make mistakes like this," the voice on the other end replied. "His application was synchronized and certified by his father."Brad… Of course it was him.Without a second thought, I hung up, grabbed Dorian, and rushed straight to the Elders' Council Hall.Morgan pulled up the system log using his administrative clearance. The timestamps and account credentials were all laid out clearly on the screen.Brad had canceled Dorian's application on Eldoria Combat Academy's official portal. In its place, he had submitted an application to a tiny, local combat academy under the jurisdiction of the
