Lucian’s POV

I look at the phone.

Then at Selene’s face.

Her face wins. Whatever the council wants at ten o’clock at night has been at ten o’clock at night for thirty seconds and can stay there for thirty more while I work out what has happened to put that specific expression on her face. She is composed, she is always composed, but underneath the composure something is sitting heavily and it has been there since before she knocked.

“Bowen,” I say. Not a question.

She blinks. “How did you know.

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Six: August

Lucian's POVThe Thursday call in the first week of August runs seven minutes.Selene comes into the study afterward and sits in her chair and opens the continuation record and writes for twenty minutes without speaking, which tells me everything the seven minutes contained without her having to say it.When she closes the notebook she looks at me."He asked me to read him the seven words," she says.I look at her."She kept going and so will they all," she says. "He asked me to read them at the start of the call. Before anything else." She pauses. "So I did.""What did he say after," I say."He said: good." She pauses. "And then he asked about the continuation record. How far along it was. What the most recent entry said." She pauses. "I read him what I wrote the night we came back from the eastern territories. The part about the doorway and his coat and the face of a man becoming careful about what he says.""You read him the part about him," I say."Yes," she says. "He asked specif

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Five: July

Selene's POVWe go on a Wednesday.Early. Before the settlement wakes. The four of us — me, Lucian, Mara, Bowen — in two cars because Bowen will not travel without enough room to have the founding record on the seat beside him, which requires its own space, which Lucian has stopped arguing about. The founding record travels with us.This is new.Bowen suggested it the night before, in the library, standing in front of the shelf with the specific expression he uses when he has already decided something and is presenting it as a suggestion out of courtesy."She should have it," he said. "The founding record. When we go."I looked at him."Calla went to the archives," he said. "She carried what she understood about the territory with her. The record should travel when the record-keeper travels." He paused. "You are going to the eastern territories to sit with a man who is part of the chain. The founding record should be there."I looked at the shelf."Both records," I said."Both," he ag

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Four: Thursday Calls

Selene's POVThe Thursday calls get shorter. Not abruptly. Not in a way that announces itself as significant. Gradually, the way things that are changing do not always announce the changing, they just change, and you notice it after. In April the calls ran thirty minutes. Sometimes forty. In May they ran twenty-five.In June, the third week, the call runs fourteen minutes.Edrin speaks more slowly now.Not because he has less to say. Because the breath costs more. I can hear it, the specific quality of a voice that is rationing the air underneath it, choosing which words are worth the cost and which can wait.He asks about the continuation record. He asks about Nara's analysis. He asks about Bren, which surprises me, and I tell him she is calling on Wednesdays and that they have spoken twice on three-way calls and that she is reading the continuation record in sections as I write them and sending questions that require Bowen and Nara to answer jointly. He says that sounds like Bren.I

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Three: What The Year Made

Selene's POVOne year. Not exactly. The rejection was in autumn and it is now June, which means we are past the anniversary by eight months and approaching it from the other side, the year completing itself not in the dramatic way of anniversaries but in the quiet way of things that have run their course and settled into what they actually are.I think about this on a Thursday morning in June while I make coffee. Not with the weight it would have carried a year ago, when thinking about the clearing meant pressing my hand against my chest and telling myself to breathe. With the specific distance of someone who can look at a fixed point and understand its size without being crushed by it.The clearing is a fixed point. What came after is everything else.I carry the coffee upstairs.Lucian is at the window.Of course he is at the window."The finding," I say, setting his mug on the desk."Yes," he says. "Official notification arrived this morning. Reth confirmed receipt.""Good," I say.

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Two: Summer Begins

Lucian's POVJune arrives without announcement. This is June's way in Ironveil — it does not declare itself the way May does, which arrives with the specific energy of something that has been waiting. June simply is. The territory reaches its full expression and stays there, the mountains green to the lower peaks, the grounds warm enough that the bench is occupied most evenings, the days long and the evenings longer.I notice the change in the quality of the light first. The study window at five-thirty shows a different sky than it did in March — not darker, the opposite, the sky already pale and committed by the time I sit down with coffee. The mornings are shorter in the dark sense and longer in every other sense, and the pack house has a different rhythm in June, more external, people moving between inside and outside with the easy frequency of a community that has opened itself to the season.Selene notices it in the grounds. She says, one morning, that the bench feels different i

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-One: The Edge Of What Can Be Found

Selene's POVNara sends a message on Monday morning at six-fifteen.I am already at the desk when it arrives, coffee made, the continuation record open to the page I wrote last night — the four words, she kept going. we did., and what they mean and who wrote them and when — and the message arrives the way Nara's messages arrive, which is with the specific urgency of someone who has been awake for hours and has found something and cannot wait for a reasonable hour to say so.The five-hundred-year records. I have access.I type back: And.Two seconds.Nothing. Not an absence of records — there are records. Administrative filings, land use documents, early governance structures from before the territory consolidation. The five-hundred-year period is documented. But there is no bond record. No Avery name. No familiar initials.I wait.I have gone further. Five hundred and fifty years. The records are sparser. Harder to access. But I have found what exists.I wait longer this time.Still n

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter One: Two Sugars, No Cream

The coffee is always two sugars, no cream.I know this the way I know which floorboard outside his bedroom creaks, which window in the east corridor sticks in the rain, which light switch needs two tries before it catches. Small, useless knowledge that my body collected without my permission. Three

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter Five: Three People, One Corridor

I have a rule about crying in front of people.I do not do it.Not in front of Mara, who would hold me and mean well and somehow make it worse. Not in front of the pack members who whisper when I pass. Certainly not in front of Lucian Blackthorn, who forfeited the right to my tears the moment he s

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter Four: What Bowen Knows

Elder Bowen does not rush. This is the first thing you learn about him. He moves through the world at his own pace, deliberate and unhurried, and he has a way of occupying a room that makes you feel like the room was always waiting for him to arrive. He steps into the kitchen now and looks at Mara

  • The Alpha Who Threw Me Away   Chapter Three: What He Doesn’t Say

I do not sleep well. This is not new. Sleep has been a negotiation since the rejection, something I have to coax and bargain with every night. Some nights I win. Other nights I lie in the dark staring at the ceiling of my small room on the third floor and wait for morning to come and end the argume
