Chapter Twenty: Unexpected

I was in my office, organizing some files while taking the time to collect my thoughts and maintain my focus. Today was supposed to be a wonderful and peaceful day for me, but the peace was disrupted when my Beta, Helene, stormed in with a look that said it all.

There was trouble somewhere.

"What's going on, Helene?" I asked, my curiosity piqued as I sat up straight.

Helene's stormy gray eyes bore into mine. "We've got a situation, Lucas. A big one," she replied.

I frowned, my head racked with concern. "Spit it out."

Mateo, one of my men, had informed me earlier about some issues at the Western border, but I had assumed it was just another routine report. Seeing how Helene walked in here with that tense look on her face hinted at something far more serious.

"Lucas, the Dawn Pack has pulled their guards from the Western border, and not just there. They've withdrawn protection from several other regions too," she informed me, and I was temporarily confused.
