The corridor was dark, but not silent. Sienna’s heart beat in her throat as she moved through the shadows, the air thick with the oppressive scent of stone and age. She could hear her own breath, shallow, ragged, each exhale a testament to the growing anxiety that had become her constant companion since she had learned of Ryder’s imprisonment. She could feel the weight of the dungeon pressing down on her, the cold stone walls wrapping her in a prison of their own.

Her hands trembled slightly as she ran her fingers over the smooth stone of the wall, her thoughts circling back to Ryder. His last words echoed in her mind: “You shouldn’t have come. You’re only making it worse.” He hadn’t wanted her here. He had begged her to stay away, to leave him to his fate, to escape the dangers of the Council’s wrath. But she couldn’t. No matter what he had said, she couldn’t turn her back on him.

Ryder had always been more than just a man to her, he was her protector, her confidant, her heart. And n

“Ryder, stop,” Sienna whispered, her voice sharp and low as she tightened her grip on his hand. “Someone’s there.”“I know,” he murmured without turning, his body going rigid as the faintest shift of air brushed past them like a warning. “Stay behind me.”“I’m not hiding.”“You are tonight.” His tone carried no room for argument, only a quiet authority that came from instinct, not ego, the same instinct that made his shoulders rise as if sensing danger before it even breathed. “Sienna, listen to me, ”“No,” she cut in, stepping beside him instead of behind like he wanted. “Whatever is waiting for us, we face it together.”He almost smiled, but the tension in his jaw didn’t soften. “Together doesn’t mean equal danger.”“Tonight it does.”He didn’t argue again because the forest answered for him. A branch snapped, a clean, decisive break, not the clumsy sound of a soldier lost in the dark. This was deliberate. Precise. Like someone making sure they were heard.Ryder’s hand shifted insti

“Ryder, move, they’re coming,” Sienna whispered, her breath quick and uneven as the distant clang of armored footsteps rolled across the burning city.He pushed himself to his feet, still fighting the pain rippling through his body from their fall, though he tried to hide it behind that familiar stubborn silence. “I’m fine,” he muttered, even though he wasn’t even trying to stand straight.“You’re lying.” She stepped toward him before she could stop herself, her hand rising instinctively as if it belonged to another woman entirely, one who hadn’t spent months forcing herself to stay away from him. “You’re barely steady.”He caught her wrist, not with force but with a desperate gentleness that made her breath falter. “Don’t touch me unless you’re ready for everything that comes with it.”Her eyes lifted to his, shaken by the quiet fire in them. “I’m not afraid of you.”“You should be,” he said, his voice low, raw, filled with the weight of everything he’d been holding in. “Sienna, if y

“Ryder, get up,” Sienna whispered fiercely, gripping his shoulders as the last echo of the goddess’s presence bled into the night like poisoned mist.He staggered but didn’t fall, breath shuddering as he fought the curse tearing through him. “She’s still here,” he rasped, voice strained and jagged. “I feel her. I feel her inside my skull. Sienna, we need to move.”“Then move with me,” she said, pulling him despite the tremor in her own limbs. “The Citadel is burning. Zane’s soldiers will sweep through these ruins any second. If they find you like this, ”“They’ll kill me,” he finished. “Or worse, drag you down trying.”She didn’t deny it. She couldn’t. War cries cracked through the night like splintering bone, carried by the wind along with the distant roar of collapsing towers. Smoke blurred the horizon. Embers rained like dying stars. The lower city was swallowed in chaos, the screams rolling like thunder up the hillside toward the old temple grounds where they stood.Ryder wiped bl

“Did you miss me?” the voice whispered, curling through the broken stones like cold smoke sliding under a locked door.Sienna froze. Ryder’s breath hitched sharply beside her, a sound dragged from the deepest place inside him, the place where the curse lived and the fear of the goddess had been carved into him like a second spine. He didn’t step back, though. He did what he had always done when danger found them, he placed himself between Sienna and the threat without thinking, without breathing, without caring what it would cost him.Sienna grabbed his arm before he could fully shield her. “Ryder,” she whispered, “don’t, ”“I’m not letting her near you,” he muttered, his voice low, steady, but she could hear the storm beneath it. “Not after everything she’s done.”“Ryder,” Sienna tried again, “that’s the goddess. You can’t fight her.”“Watch me,” he snapped, eyes locked on the shadow drifting forward.Lunaris stepped into the faint glow of the wounded moon. She didn’t walk, she glide

“Say it,” she whispered, breath shaking as if the night itself demanded the truth from them.Ryder didn’t move at first. Didn't blink. Didn’t breathe. He stood in front of her like a man fearing that even the wind brushing between them could break whatever fragile space held them together. His voice rose rough, pulled from somewhere he had buried beneath guilt, longing, and the jagged ruins of every moment he had tried to keep himself away from her. “Say what, Sienna?” he asked, though the question trembled with the weight of a man who already knew the answer and was terrified of hearing it spoken aloud. She stepped closer. Not enough to touch him, but enough that the air shifted between their bodies, enough that he could feel the warmth of her skin brush the cold edges of his restraint. “That you didn’t stop,” she murmured. “That you didn’t forget me. That you didn’t bury it like you tried to pretend you could.”He exhaled sharply, as if the words cut deeper than any blade between th

“Ryder… don’t let go.” The words slipped out of her before she could stop them, quiet but sharp enough to cut through the charged air between them. She hadn’t planned to speak. She hadn’t planned anything. Her voice betrayed her heart first, faster than her reason could catch up.He froze again, breath caught in his throat, as if her plea had reached the deepest place inside him, the part that had been bleeding since the night they were torn apart. His grip on her arm loosened but didn’t fall away. His fingers hovered at her skin, trembling, as though touching her meant risking everything.“Sienna,” he murmured, strained and uneven. “You shouldn’t say things like that.”“Why not?”“Because I’ll believe you.” His voice cracked. “And I can’t survive believing you if you walk away again.”She stepped closer, not caring that the wind carried the scent of fire, not caring that the sky above them rippled with an unseen presence, not caring that their world had been split in half. She only c
