{Lisa's POV}

The night had been long. But it had come to an end. It had to be the most stressful night I had ever experienced. I pressed my palm against my tummy, thinking about the life growing in me. 'Hey there big guy... hope mommy didn't get you too worried?'

A checkup was well on my agenda when all this was over. Outside, dawn finally broke across the hills, soft gray light spilling through the thin curtains, touching Heri's face where she slept. She had not stirred once since the ritual. Her breathing was shallow but steady, the only proof she was still with us.

"Rest up." I muttered.

I sat beside her, legs curled beneath me, hand resting on the blanket near hers. My head ached from lack of sleep, but there was no way I was leaving her side.

I just started humming a lullaby when I caught the whispers of a conversation from outside. Ronan's voice carried in first, followed by Damon's.

"She's resting well."

"She survived worse than what most grown wolves could endure," Damon said.

  • The Alpha’s Accidental Surrogate    Chapter 127

    {Ronan’s POV}It felt like a lifetime away from home.With the honeymoon, and the underlying mystery I needed to solve. Let's not forget all the complications that came from just that… it felt like we were in another world entirely.To be fair, we were.Needless to say. It felt good to be back home, and not just be outside looking in.‘Goodness me. That took forever.’The city had its own feel. Different from the wilderness, different from the cottage on the hillside in a different country. And everything else really.The estate walls rose high as we passed through the gates, the familiar ironwork shining faintly under the morning sun. Weeks away, and it felt both foreign and all too familiar.‘I've missed this.’ I laughed internally.Sean and Colt were already waiting in the drive, leaning against the stone pillars like they were posts assigned to them. The second they saw us, their grins split wide. Ear to ear.“Good to see the married couple back,” Sean called.I scoffed under my b

    {Lisa’s POV}The first thing I noticed was the smell. Warm bread, something faintly sweet, and the earthy trace of coffee that followed it. All of it extremely mouth watering.When I opened my eyes, a tray sat neatly on the table beside the bed. Porridge, bread still soft from the heat, and a slice of fruit cut so carefully I could already guess who had done it.A smile tugged at my lips. “Oh Ronan.”I didn't waste any time digging in, but I ate slowly, savoring the thoughtfulness more than the food itself. It was one of those gestures that stayed with me, reminding me that beneath the Alpha, beneath the strategist, was a man who still thought of these little things. He proved it time and time again until I simply lost track. It felt like a novel experience each time.“Mhmmm.” I moaned, licking my fingers multiple times over. His cooking skills really did outmatch mine. But I couldn't let him know that. I'd definitely find a way to pay him back for all this and more.When I was done,

    {Lisa’s POV}As we headed in, the safe house… cottage felt more like home than it had when we first arrived. The fire still smoldered low in the hearth, and the air carried that faint, earthy scent of old wood that seemed to cling to everything here. Heri’s small hand was warm in mine, her steps dragging with fatigue… in no small part due to Ronan’s oversized coat.“Come on, sweetheart,” I murmured, guiding her toward her room.She didn’t protest. Not once. I tucked her into the bed, smoothing the blanket over her shoulders as her eyes fluttered shut. She clutched her little paper figure against her chest. I watched her breathing slow, soft and steady, before I slipped out and closed the door quietly behind me.Downstairs, Damon and Ronan were already settled, scotch in hand. The sharp smell of it reached me before I even saw the glasses glinting in the firelight. Damon sat back like the weight of the day had finally caught up to him, while Ronan leaned forward, his long fingers curli

    {Lisa’s POV}The days that followed Calista’s departure were some of the calmest we had experienced this entire trip.I stayed by Heri's side as much as I could, humming songs, tunes and melodies I was fond of. Especially a song from when I was younger, Star Shopping by Lil Peep. I hadn’t heard it in ages, but it still felt calming to hum, and Heri seemed to enjoy it too.She was conscious now, though the strength in her limbs hadn’t fully returned. Her eyes followed me curiously when I moved, but she spoke sparingly, as though words were a burden. It reminded me of when we first met, when I thought she simply couldn’t speak. Back then, she had looked at me like I was a stranger she couldn’t decide on trusting. And to be fair… I was. To think we bonded so much in such little time.“.... look at the sky tonight, all of those stars have a reason.” I whispered while she rested beside me. On the other hand Ronan sat with Damon at the table. I stared at them through the open doorway.“We h

    {Lisa’s POV}“Elder Veyra… and Elder Kal.”The room felt smaller after Heri’s words. I had thought nothing could rattle me more than watching her little body shake with visions that belonged to someone else, but when her lips formed those names, my breath caught like a hiccup in my throat.The fire hissed at the same moment, a sharp crack echoing like it was reacting to the revelation just like everyone else. Especially Ronan.It felt different having a gnawing suspicion you knew was true… and actually confirming that suspicion as reality.Silence stretched for a while. Damon was frozen at the edge of the room. Ronan went still, his fists slowly unclenching, though his eyes burned brighter than before. Calista leaned forward, gaze locked on Heri as though confirming something she had suspected.“So it was them,” Ronan muttered finally. His tone didn't sound heated. But I could feel the killing intent overflowing from him. “The very ones meant to guard him.”Calista inhaled, attempted
