I choked on my tea, the drink spurting out and trailing down the side of my mouth, down my throat as I coughed. My face scorched and my hand trembled as I placed the cup back onto the table, almost spilling the rest of its contents.

“Nerina!” I scolded, half-heartedly, my voice rough and breathy from almost choking to my death.

She smirked, “I’m right, aren’t I?”

I wiped my mouth with a napkin and tried to breathe, “Y-You… saw?”

“Hmm, not really, but I’m pretty sure I knew what I walked in on.” She responded, her smirk growing.

My hands covered my face as I groaned. “Oh goddess…”

Nerina crackled, “Yeah, you can’t lie to me now.”

“Why did you have to walk in on that?” I muttered, mostly to myself but Nerina’s ears were too sharp for her own good… when you need them not to be. Then peeked between my fingers to look at her.

Her expression was still as smug as ever. “Why not? Did I break up your precious moment?” Then she shrugged, breakin

╔═━─────━▒ Cassius ▒━─────━═╝A knock on my office door had my focus shifting. My head snapped up towards the sound, my response almost immediate and gruff as I sensed the presence of the person behind the door. The door opened and my beta walked in; a tall, solid, stoic frame. His gait, measured and quiet as he crossed the room and stopped in front of my desk.“Alpha,” he greeted with a bow, his hand resting across his chest and I responded with a short nod before he straightened. My gaze caught the brown envelope in his right hand and my brow shot up out of pure curiosity. “What’s that in your hand?”“The report, Alpha, on the interrogation you ordered.” He replied, then meticulously slid the large envelope across my desk to me.My brows raised and I picked up the envelope. Pulling out the documents in it, my gaze scanned over the first few words at the top, written in bold, black ink.The report gave brief details about the number of servants that worked under my roof, their po

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀ “Are you sure you’re really fine?” Rina asked for the umpteenth time for over an hour. Her warm, ocean blue gaze softly worried over me behind the teacup raised to her mouth. I sighed, “Rina, come now. We’ve already been over this a million times in the past hour. I’m fine.” I said softly, a faint smile crossing my lips. “I’m sorry,” she said with a soft slur, her shoulders deflating, gaze lowering to her cup. “It’s just… I just can’t help it, you know, you almost got killed. It must have been horrifying for you, so I just thought, maybe you didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t mean to be so persistent about it.” Her lips pursed, even though they hid behind her teacup. I knew so. Rina was like an open book to me. I sighed, dropping my cup onto the saucer and crossing my arms before leaning back slightly. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful and happy that she was worrying over me but it’s been an hour since she came by and she’s still fuss

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding when Zenya walked out of Cassius’s office. My body sank with relief I didn’t know I desperately sought.Cassius’s presence is a steady pillar at my side. I leaned in instinctively, soaking into the warmth of his embrace as he led me across his office space to one of the love sofas at the center, his form settling beside me.“Are you alright?” He asked after a moment, his voice quiet, steady, grounding me and I turned, catching his soft, bright hazel eyes watching me with concern. My lips tilted back with a soft smile and I nodded, “Yes, I’m fine.” I breathed.Cassius’s gaze lowered, running scrutiny over my face as though to confirm my words before he lifted his gaze again, and he nodded once, seeming satisfied. But then his face contorted almost immediately with another look.“I’m sorry… about Zenya.” He said quietly, reaching for my face, his thumb drawing soft trails on my cheek. My eye

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀ With that, she moved and started towards me. Or rather, the door. Her words hung heavily in the air, sharp and jabbing like the thin heels of her black boots clanking against the wooden flooring of Cassius’s office—an impending threat and maybe it was even though she’d stated otherwise. But I couldn't shake off the ominousness in her words that jabbed at me like razor-sharp claws. She might have been looking at Cassius when she said those words, but it felt like they were directed at me. An involuntary shiver ran down my spine. My instinct rattled as she neared, unsettled by the manic look in her piercing green eyes. I tried to breathe, tried not to let my unease show. But the longer I held her sharp gaze, the more turbulently my mind unfurled. But I also knew Zenya was trying to play some sort of mind games with me. She was trying to pull a wild string against me. She’d done so before and I was barely healed from my wounds.

❀° ┄───────╮ Sylphiette ╰───────┄ °❀ Cassius’s hands tightened around my waist at Zenya’s snide remark and he shifted, turning quietly with a slow, predatory stir. His hands slid off my body as he turned to face Zenya, his large frame partly forming a wall in front of me. “That’s enough, Zenya,” he said, his voice low with a dark edge. I could tell he was trying to put a leash on his anger. It rose off him in waves of frost, sending a thin shiver down my spine. “What is the matter with you?” Zenya’s head snapped towards Cassius, her lips twisted with a snarl as she looked at Cassius, her eyes wide and glowing hot with anger and something else. “What is the matter with me?” she hissed, snapping like a rattling snake. “What’s the matter with you!? How could you… How could you kiss that woman? And worse, in front of me!” Cassius shuffled, his hands sinking into his pockets. His face and voice exuded a calmness contrasting with Zenya’s fuming expression. “What’s wrong with that?
