Elora's POV

"Don't you talk to her like that!" Zeke yelled back at Laura.

He was defending her.

He was standing up for Charlotte?!

"Zeke?" The word left my lips before I could think. "What... What are you doing here? And with..."

My voice broke, fading away, replaced with the chill I felt running down my spine.

What the heck was he doing here? Didn't he say he wasn't in contact with her? And why was he fighting for her?

So many thoughts ran through my mind.

But Zeke looked shocked.

"Babe. What are you doing here?" He asked. "Shouldn't you be at the cemetery with Katelyn?"

A chuckle escaped my lips at his words. Now, that was definitely funny.

"Annie! I asked you to keep Elora away from here!" Laura snapped.

Zeke's eyes darted from me to Laura, confused. "Wait a minute! You know this bitch."

"That's it!" Laura growled, picking up a fork. "I'm going to use this and put a hole in your..."

"Calm down, Laura," I muttered, standing in between both of them as I held up my hands. "Please, let me handle this."

Thankfully, she listened.

I knew Laura was a wild wolf, but Zeke was a battle-experienced one.

He was a Beta just like me, and we had both fought side by side in a few battles.

She wasn't a match for him.

Then Zeke scoffed. "Don't tell me you work in this sh*t hole."

I didn't know what to say. I had been keeping my odd—omega—jobs from him.

Losing our child was one thing, but finding out that the reason why it happened was because I was overworking myself by doing jobs meant for Omegas was another.

He would never forgive me.

I took a few steps towards him, my voice lowering. "Can we talk about this privately?"

I touched his hand, but he slapped it away.

"Talk privately? No, Elora, I want to talk about this now!" His eyes and hands spread across the restaurant. "To think I would find you in such a filthy place—and working?! That's insane! I expected better from you."

With those words out of his lips, he walked away.

"Wait a minute, Zeke. I can explain," I pleaded. "Just please, give me a chance!"

But he didn't listen. Instead, he grabbed Charlotte's arm—more gently than he had ever held me—and pulled her alongside him as he strode off.

I stood, frozen in place and time, not knowing what to do.

I should be the one who was pissed. He made a promise to be there for me and our daughter, yet he was the one who was upset.

Things shouldn't have gone the way it was. It shouldn't have.

Laura tried to talk to me, but I waved her off. And the rest of the day went by like that—live it was waved off.

I returned home tired and hungry. Things were left the same—the house unclean—the pots empty. Just like always.

But Zeke was in. I knew because the door was left open.

I strolled towards my room, barely having enough energy to lift my legs.

I was about to walk into my room when I heard his room door open.

"Why are you back so late?" He asked.

But I didn't reply. I couldn't.

He held my hand the moment I tried to walk away, his grip on me tight.

"Don't walk out of me," He said. "I need an answer from you."

"I had to work," I said without looking at him.

He chuckled, letting go of my arm. "I don't know you anymore, Ellie. I don't even know what job you do anymore."

He was about to enter his room when my words made him stop.

"You would've if you had cared—at least for once—just like you did with that woman today."

Our gaze met as I turned. At first, he looked a little annoyed, then speechless.

"It wasn't planned," He said. "I had a busy day today and happened to bump into her at her workplace. That's all."

I scoffed. "Yeah, right."

He held my hand once more.

"You know I'm telling you the truth," He said, his tone softening. "Besides, there isn't any filthy physical relationship between us."

I didn't know what to say.

Suddenly, his arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me towards him. His lips found mine, locking them in something I have always longed for.

His grip around me tightened, turning me on.

I wanted to give in, to be lost in the arms of the man I had loved all my life. Then a glimpse of him holding onto the Omega—like she was the only thing that mattered—flashed before my eyes.

Without saying why, I pushed him away.

A mix of disappointment and anger etched into his features.

"To think it took all the guts in me to try to be with a fat ugly ogre like you, and yet, you're pushing me away?!" He was about to head into his room when he turned to me again. "Grow up, Elora! You are such a cheap and old-fashioned woman who can't even get herself a nice lingerie! You're not getting any younger, so you better start acting it. Got it?"

With those words out of his lips, he walked into his room, shutting it behind with a loud thud.

My legs buckled, but luckily I was close to my door. I held onto the handle, steadying myself.

I stayed there for a while before finally finding the strength to head down and prepare a meal for myself.

"Everything was going to be fine," I told myself, but the tears that streamed down my cheeks and rage in my heart betrayed the calmness in my voice.

I was sorry I was such a distasteful partner. I didn't mean to be this way. I didn't even know I was.

I wiped my tears, pretending everything was okay. It was going to get better. I had hope—that I could win him back.

He was yet to make love to her. That meant something.

He still loved me, and that was all that mattered.

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   131_The Cleansing Ritual

Lloyd's POVThe campfire had been set, burning brightly. We formed a circle around it, the faces of the elders, councilors, betas and every member of the Alpha house lit in golden-yellow glow. It heated our skin with warmth, and the brilliant light made the silver hue of the full moon insignificant. Every face looked anticipatory, but my shoulders were set. I folded one of my hands into a fist.Elora, by my side, stood still, too still. Occasionally, I’d give her a glance. Her face was glued to the flames burning before us, her posture too stiff. On my other side, Xavier’s jaw was set, and he had given me a look when I glanced his way.Elder Rhys stepped forward towards the fire. “I believe we all know why we gathered here,” he started. “As part of our mission to ensure peace in the pack, we must also ensure that it comes through the right means.”A small murmur rose from the crowd around, competing with the burning crackles from the bonfire.“I know none of us expected this,” El

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   130_Cause for Prevention

Elora's POVI believed that Lloyd would come up with some miraculous plan to save us from the ordeal of the Crimson Circle. None of us has an idea of how they are going to intercept the Crimson ritual. The only thing we know is that they have their own posing as the witch. And that is where it gets all complicated. We don’t know if the lady posing as Miranda is the actual Crimson Circle witch or whether she was just a grifter. Either way, we know that some members of the Crimson Circle will show up, and when they do, we don’t even know how we’d identify them.I had my fair share of dealing with Darius, and I hoped that my magic would intervene like it always does, but I still feared that thing might go wrong somehow. I entangled my arms with Lloyd as I joined him, my eyes overlooking the clearing downstairs. A couple of omegas were setting up long firewood for a gigantic campfire.Standing with Lloyd in the room felt much better than staying alone, so I relished the moment as I ma

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   129_The Evening at Dusk

Lloyd's POVI stood before my windows, overlooking the garden, where omegas and a few betas ran around to get the place ready for the cleansing ritual tonight. For a moment, it felt so surreal. I didn’t know what to expect. The possibilities of everything that could go wrong in this ritual rang in my head, and for a moment, the fight against sorcery felt tangible. It felt real. All this while, we never had an idea of what we were fighting. This night is the night where everything comes to the surface. It’s the wonder night of the Crimson Circle. The night they’ll try to use to recruit more people into their circle and further propagate their mission.Damn what Davina said. I scoffed within me, shoving a hand into my pocket. We’ve got this tonight. We can handle this no matter what Davina thinks. But Davina claimed that she could see the future in fragments. If she has seen it, what stops it from happening? “Alpha?” I almost flinched at Xavier’s voice. I didn’t turn to him.“What

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   128_Now Desired

Lloyd's POVAfter Elora left the room with Lena, I walked to the seat Elora had abandoned and sat down. My mind was bothered by the urgency of the cleansing ritual and the things Lena claimed Davina told her. For some reasons, I felt Lena held back on what Davina told her, but I also didn’t want to get on her bad side since she has agreed to help us. “You don’t look so bright today, Alpha,” Xavier noted. “Is it because of the situation last night?”“What situation?” I gave him a sharp look.He hesitated. “The one between you and Elora. The one you’ve refused to say anything about.”I dragged my gaze away from his face and leaned back, hanging my gaze on the ceiling. The gold lines on the white ceiling seemed to fade in and out. I blinked my eyes closed. “I told you we are cool,” I said.“Are you sure about that?” Xavier asked. “Because you don’t sound so sure.”“Are you doubting me right now?” I threw the question back at him. He didn’t reply immediately. The silence let me go ba

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   127_A Failed Lie

Elora's POVMy body went cold and my chest tightened, but I managed to recover myself in time to glance back and sideways. When I noticed that there was no one in sight. I drew her into the kitchen.“What the hell are you talking about?” I hushed with urgency.“Don’t try to act dumb,” Lena scoffed. “I tried to give you hints in the room that we were alike, but you pretended like you didn’t know what I was saying.”“Because I don’t understand a thing about what you are saying,” I replied. “And I wish I did.”“We are mages,” she said. “And you seem to be perfect around here, where mages are supposed to be hidden. You managed to get married, and you—”“You have zero idea about who I am,” I spat. “Because if you do, you wouldn’t act like an entitled brat who doesn’t understand the first thing about respect!” My voice was below a whisper, but it was too sharp. Too strong.“You called me an entitled brat?” She flared. “I saved your ass back there when your Alpha and supposed lover wanted m

  • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   126_Help From the First Mage

Elora's POVThe ebony mage sounded like she knew a lot more than she was letting on, and that worried me.We just revealed that her great-grandmother appeared to us, and she reacted like she knew so much about it. I was tired of running into all the spare relationships since we began the serious work of tracing down sorcery and finding the people engaged in it. Lena looked like another distraction, and I don’t think we are willing to tolerate that at all.“What’s wrong?” I asked as calmly as possible, even when every nerve in me yelled to go sarcastic. Lena turned to me, her hair slightly dishevelled from raking it too much.“I don’t know, I don’t know…I’ve been seeing Davina in my dreams for some time now, and there is stuff she’s been telling me. Stuff about some occult…CC…Crimson Circle?” Lena looked up at me, then dragged her gaze to Lloyd. “Does any of this make any sense?” I asked.Lloyd and I shared a look, and I replied before Lloyd could talk. “It depends.”“My mom said i
