Elora's POV

I was refilling the napkin holder when I saw him—khakis too tight with a smirk too wide for his face. He was the kind of guy who would think calling a waitress “sweetheart” was charming.

I kept my head down, hoping he’d just order and go.

But then I caught it—his hand. It was sliding low and sneaky toward Annie’s butt while she bent down to grab a dropped fork.

“Don’t,” I said, loud enough to make him freeze.

He chuckled. “Relax, babe, I was just—”

“I said don’t.” I said , cutting him off as I stepped forward. “You touch her, and I’ll make sure your fingers bend the wrong way before you even think of ‘just joking’ again.”

His smirk dropped. He looked around like someone might back him up, but no one did.

“I—I was leaving anyway,” he mumbled, retreating like a kicked dog.

Annie straightened, still holding the fork, eyes wide. “Elora…”

“You okay?” I asked, my tone softening.

She nodded slowly, a small laugh escaping her lips. “I think you just became my favorite person ever.”

“Yeah, well,” I said, grabbing the fork and tossing it with part of the dirty dishes I had just picked up. “Don't get used to it.”

She smiled awkwardly, knowing I meant those words. This was my first time acting out of character, and it felt oddly out of place.

I wasn't the social type. Well, I was, but I decided to not be while working around Omegas.

The only person I could easily talk to was Laura.

Actually, she knew a lot about me, more than I ever intended for her to know.

"What are you thinking about?" Laura said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Nothing," I said simply.

She shrugged, before her eyes beamed with amusement. "Oh, and that was cool—" She pointed towards Annie. "I'm sure they're going to see you as more than just a weird Brunette."

I chuckled. "Just what I was avoiding."

Suddenly, my alarm rang.

"I guess that's your cue to leave," She said.

"Yeah it is."

She smiled. "Say hi to the little one for me."

I nodded, giving her a hug before heading towards the changing room. When I was done, I went out through the back door.

In less than an hour, I was at the cemetery, facing Katelyn's gravestone.

Since we couldn't get to see what she looked like, we didn't have any picture to put there.

The only thing that marked it was the names, "Katelyn Dawn," that had been engraved into the top of the cemented grave.

Her grave didn't look very dirty. It was like someone had been here a few weeks ago.

I dropped the flowers I had bought on my way, staring at the engraved spot.

I couldn't help but think about how she would've looked if she had actually been born.

After she was taken out of me through surgery, Zeke had ordered that she should be thrown away. So I didn't even get a glimpse of her.

I didn't get to see the color of her eyes, or the color of her hair. Was her hair brown like mine? Or red like Zeke's? Was her eyes as blue as the sea, or brown like the tree trunks in the woods, just like Zeke's?

His eyes always reminded me of my first shift.

I was eighteen when it happened. I had recently been told about Dad's death.

The then Alpha's daughter, Mira, had pushed me as usual, slamming my back into a locker.

"What's up little freak?" She had asked , a smirk curving her lips. "How's being alone been treating you?"

I had tried to ignore her as always, pushing her out of my way. But her next words made me freeze.

"No wonder your father was killed," She purred. "I'm sure he has been longing to rid himself of a weirdo like—"

Before she could complete the words, I grabbed her hair, dragging her into an empty class.

The next few minutes were filled with lots of screams and blood, but neither of them were mine.

Still, it wasn't enough to quench the anger that her words had ignited in me. So I ran away, towards the woods, as fast as I could, and that was when it happened.

Born breaking, flesh tearing, muscle stretching sounds filled the air, mixed with my screams.

I didn't know what was happening. All I knew was that my body was changing—painfully—and I wanted it to stop.

I didn't know how long I was out, but then I felt someone tapping me, calling out my name.

When I blinked my eyes open, there they were—eyes as brown as the desert underneath the setting sun—staring at me.

But now when I needed those same eyes, they weren't here.

It was over two hours, and yet, Zeke still wasn't here. He didn't show up. Not for me—our daughter—or our marriage.

I returned back to the restaurant since my shift was over, heading in through the back door.

But then, I heard noise—more like an argument—coming from the front desk.

I moved closer, trying to understand what was going on.

"I'm sorry, but you have to leave!" Someone yelled.

I didn't have to look to know it was Laura. But a part of me wanted to know who had awakened the beast in her.

I moved, about to cross into the main dining area when Annie blocked my path.

"Laura told us not to let you by," She muttered, her hands up.

But it was too late. My eyes looked past her shoulders, and I was stunned.

It was Charlotte. She was the one Laura was yelling at.

But what shocked me the most was the red-headed figure behind her.

It was Zeke.

Elora’s POVThe letter crinkled beneath my fingertips as I folded it once, twice, then pressed it to my chest, just above the fast thump of my heart after taking it back from Lloyd. My fingers trembled. Not from the cold, but from the weight of what I had just read.My father had written me a warning in words I never imagined I would read from him. Zeke and I were never meant to be.It was a single sentence, but it unraveled everything. The failed connection. The empty silence that followed the ceremony. The distant look in Zeke’s eyes—like even he knew something was missing but refused to admit it.And me? I thought I was broken. That I had somehow failed the bond. That maybe love was supposed to feel like obedience or like duty without warmth. It never felt right. Not even once.I stared at the pedestal where the dim light of the orb still pulsed softly, breathing like a slow heartbeat. My eyes dropped and I noticed something...carvings. It was something I hadn't noticed before—sh

Lloyd’s POVI should’ve kept my mouth shut.I barely heard the click of his boots before the door flew open. His shadow hit the wall before he did, tall and jagged, swallowing everything in the dim hallway. I took a step back. But it was too late. His hand struck like a whip—fast and unforgiving. My cheek flared with pain and my head jerked to the side. Copper flooded my mouth.“What did I tell you about questioning me?!” He growled, venom spilling out of his words. His voice was calm. Too calm. That kind of calm that comes before a storm rips the roof off.I opened my mouth, maybe to say sorry. Maybe to explain. I wasn't sure. I couldn't remember anymore. Besides, it wasn't like I got the chance. His fist hit my stomach, folding me over like paper.“Ungrateful little worm,” he growled, grabbing a fistful of my shirt and dragging me down the hall. My feet scraped against the stone, toes banging into steps and corners. I didn’t cry. I couldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing t

Elora’s POVLloyd banged on the door, harder than a few minutes ago."I don't think it'll open that way," I muttered. He turned to me, a frown on his face. "You think."I looked away, ignoring his gaze.He let out a humorless chuckle. "No, you don't get to do that."He grabbed my arm and spun me so I would face him."You don't get to put us in such a mess and then pretend like you don't care.""Well of course I care!" I yelled, my eyes getting a little watery. His expression changed to something along the lines of pity and sadness.I looked away again. The last thing I wanted was his or anyone else's pity.Silence crept in as none of us said anything else.I turned to the door. The red runes on the door pulsed now and then like a heartbeat. Lloyd’s POV"Dad! Where are you?" Elora screamed! She tried to run further inside wherever we were, but I held her back."Where the heck do you think you're going to?" I asked, confused at her reaction. She didn't seem to want to stay calm. Her eyes flinched, darting from me into the darkness."He is call me!" She finally yells after a while.I tried to remain calm, hoping it wasn't what I thought as I asked, "Who was?""My Dad," She muttered, tears spilling out of the corners of her eyes. "He has been here. • The Alpha's Beta: Once Rejected, Now Desired   016_Beneath the Ash

Elora’s POVThe sky was still ink-dark when we arrived. The ancient warrior grounds lay beneath a thin layer of mist, the kind that hugged the earth like a second skin. Lloyd had offered to take me to the place the cordinates led to.Wild grass had overtaken the cracked stone paths. The old training poles stood at awkward angles, leaning like broken spines. Nothing here had been touched in years. It smelled of rust and forgotten sweat."What happened here?" I asked, curiosity tugging at me."What do you think?" He replied with a question too.But I wasn't sure. Though there weren't any, I could smell a hint metallic substance in the air—a scent I was familiar with.It wasn't strong, just a faint foul smell that had mixed with the dust, and fog for decades."I guess you skipped history class," Lloyd said, pulling me out of my thoughts.I couldn't help but smile—an awkward one—as I ran my fingers through my hair.I didn't think it would be that obvious. I never went to history class. I

Lloyd’s POVThe council meeting ended as usual. More questions than answers and nothing settled.Typical.It pissed me off to see how the other Alphas didn't take what was going on seriously. Cale was all talk and no actual action. Same goes for the rest of them.Maybe it was because their territories hadn't been infiltrated with objects like ours had. That was why I couldn't rely on the council for any real solution. For years, Black-fang Pack has done their investigations by themselves and have kept it to their selves. With what I have observed, I intend to do the same.I stayed behind near the door, watching the rest of the elites and invitees file out—one by one. Some nodded and some avoided my gaze entirely. Zeke didn’t glance back once. Clinton, on the other hand, kept his head down and his mouth tight.Xavier stepped up beside me, arms folded, gaze following Darius as he disappeared down the corridor.“You saw the shift,” he muttered. “Darius looked anxious at first until
