CIARA’S POV

My phone buzzed against my ear, and I pressed it closer as we drove through the winding roads leading to the academy.

"Ciara, sweetheart, are you almost there?" Mom's voice came through crystal clear, that familiar note of worry threading through her words.

I glanced at Darragh, who was focused on the road ahead but listening. The academy's towers were just coming into view through the trees. "Yes, Mom. We should be there in about ten minutes."

"And everything is alright? You have everything you need?"

"Everything's fine," I said, shifting in my seat to get a better view of Darragh's profile. He caught me looking and smiled, that soft expression that always made my heart flutter. "You shouldn't worry about me too much. You should worry about yourself."

There was a pause on the other end, then Mom's gentle laugh. "No demon would hurt us, darling. You know that. Just have fun at the academy."

"I will." The words came out more confidently than I felt.

"Good. Call me when you'

  • The Alpha's Betrayal: My Second Chance To Defy Fate   NINETY FOUR

SPECIAL CHAPTER: SARAH MORGANI needed another drink. That was my excuse anyway. The truth was I needed space from watching Ciara work the room like she'd been doing it her whole life."I'm going to grab another drink. You two want anything?""I'm good," Ciara said, and Pippa shook her head.I weaved through the crowd toward the refreshment table, grateful for the excuse to get away. The punch was sickeningly sweet, but I ladled another cup anyway and took a long sip. The alcohol burned a little going down. From across the room, I could see Ciara and Pippa talking. Even from this distance, Ciara commanded attention. Students kept glancing her way, whispering to each other. I knew exactly what they were saying."That's Ciara O'Callahan. Darragh Byrne's mate.""She's the one with the fated bond.""Lucky girl."Lucky girl. That's what everyone kept saying. Ciara was the lucky one with her perfect mate bond and her ability to read people like open books. She'd walked into this party and w

CIARA’S POVThe welcome party was in full swing by the time we made our way down to the main hall. Music pulsed through the speakers, and students clustered in groups around the room, drinks in hand and conversations flowing. The academy had transformed the space with twinkling lights and draped fabric that made everything feel more intimate despite the high ceilings.I surveyed the room with the advantage of experience. I knew exactly who was worth talking to and who would be nothing but trouble."See that group by the punch table?" I nodded toward a cluster of vampire students. "Avoid them. They think they're better than everyone else because their families have old money. Old... old... money."Pippa followed my gaze nervously. "How do you know all this already?"I caught myself before I could say something about living this before. "Good instincts, I guess. And over there," I pointed to a group of werewolves near the windows, "those are the ones you want to befriend. They're loyal

DARRAGH’S POVRiona moved like lightning despite her injured hand. She twisted away from my grab, blood from her wounded fingers leaving dark streaks across the marble wall where she steadied herself. Her breathing was harsh and labored. The magic she'd been throwing around was taking its toll."You know what's funny?" she said, cradling her bleeding hand against her chest. "You look exactly like your father. Same arrogant expression. Same entitled stance."I circled her slowly, keeping my distance while I looked for an opening. The hallway was narrow here, lined with portraits of dead Byrnes. Not much room to maneuver, which worked in my favor. She couldn't cast wide-area spells without risking bringing the ceiling down on both of us. Short area spells would only deflect back at her as well. The protective rune was plenty expensive as it was effective."My father was a piece of shit," I said. "But he never went around murdering innocent people."Riona laughed, but it came out as more

DARRAGH’S POVThe drive back from the academy should have been peaceful. The winding roads through the forest were familiar, and I'd made this trip hundreds of times before. But something felt wrong from the moment I pulled away from those iron gates.Maybe it was leaving Ciara behind. Maybe it was the weight of everything she'd told me about Mom's fate. Or maybe it was just the nagging feeling that I should have stayed longer, said more, held her one more time before walking away.My phone buzzed on the passenger seat. A text message.I glanced at it while keeping one eye on the road, expecting maybe a message from Ciara telling me she'd settled into her dorm room. Instead, I saw Mom's name on the screen.Do not come home. Danger. Riona here. Bastien dead. Stay away. The words hit me like a physical blow. I read them again, certain I'd misunderstood. But the message was clear. Crystal clear."No no no no no." The words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them. This couldn't b

SPECIAL CHAPTER: RIONA MAYCHILDThe kitchen was too quiet. I stood at the counter, scrubbing the same plate for the third time while Killian's voice echoed from the dining room. He was lecturing someone about pack politics again. Always pack politics. My hands shook slightly. I set the plate down and gripped the edge of the sink. The ceramic was cool under my fingertips, grounding me when my magic threatened to bubble up. It had been doing that more often lately. Little sparks when Killian spoke to me like I was nothing. Tiny flickers when he made those comments about "proper breeding" within earshot."Riona." His voice cut through my thoughts. "The tea service needs cleaning."I turned around. Killian stood in the doorway, his grey eyes cold and dismissive. Behind him, I could see the other pack elders still seated around the table. They'd been here for hours, discussing territory disputes and bloodline politics."Of course, father in law." I kept my voice steady. Respectful. The way

SPECIAL CHAPTER: DAYO BRYNEThe air around Riona crackled with deadly energy. I could feel the magic building, could see the way her fingers moved in patterns I'd learned to recognize over the years. She was casting something big. Something meant to end me.But I was ready. The protective charm at my throat pulsed with warmth just before Riona's spell hit. The magic she'd thrown at me – a slicing curse meant to cut me in half just like Ciara had foreseen – bounced off the charm's barrier and flew straight back at her.Riona's eyes widened in shock for just a moment before her own spell caught her across the middle. The sound she made wasn't quite a scream. More like a gasp of surprise. Then she toppled backward, her body separating at the waist with a wet, horrible sound.Blood spread across the marble floor in a dark pool. But instead of dying, Riona laughed. The sound was wet and gurgling, but still filled with that same cold amusement."You powerless cunts and your charms," she whe
