Vanessa

The grass in the backyard crunched under my feet. It matched the feeling in my chest. Olga was already there. She waited behind the old shed. This spot was far from prying eyes.

“Did you sleep well?” she asked softly. Her back was still to me.

I didn’t answer right away. How could I have slept well? My hand went to my side. The skin there was tender, already showing the ugly colors of a bruise.

“Alec’s bastard beta almost killed me last night,” I finally said. My voice was flat. I lifted my shirt to show the fading marks that painted my skin. “He would have, if Alec hadn’t stopped him.”

Olga didn’t flinch. Her face, when she eventually turned it slightly, didn’t shift. I saw no pity there. No anger on my behalf. Nothing. Just that calm stillness she always wore.

Instead, she said, “You are chosen by fate, Vanessa. Lucas is not the enemy. Alec is.”

My brows pulled together. What was she saying? “If Alec wanted me dead, then why did he hit Lucas in front of everyone? Why did he

MarissaThe wind howled across the dock and tore at my jacket like it wanted to rip me apart. Waves slammed against the rocks and sprayed salt into my face.I stood next to Queen Mallory with my boots sinking into the wet sand. Her hand gripped my arm so tightly it hurt. The elders and guards surrounded us and their lanterns cast shaky beams over the dark water.Every moment stretched into eternity. A splash broke the waves’ rhythm. I screamed at the top of my lungs without moving closer. My eyes locked on a figure in the water. It was Justin. His body floated limp and pale under the moonlight.Queen Mallory’s sob shattered the air. Tears streamed down her face as she lurched forward.“No, my son, no!”Raw grief twisted her voice. The elders shouted orders and guards splashed into the shallows. Their boots churned the water as they dragged Justin to shore. Pain tore through me and I screamed again. My throat burned. He was gone. The curse had killed him.I felt my own life fading like

JustinMy descent ended with a thud that jarred my bones. The bottom of the pit opened into a maze-like tunnel and stone walls pressed in close. The darkness wrapped around me. I landed in a crouch and my knees buckled. A chill swept over me but I pushed up and steadied myself.Wailing echoed from somewhere ahead. A woman's cry twisted with pain and rage. Then a voice whispered in my ear. "Go forward. Don't look back."Fear should have gripped me but it vanished like smoke. Hunger replaced it. Hunger for freedom and hate for my enemies. My will felt foreign, like something ancient drove me. The wailing grew louder and more disturbing. A banshee's scream that scraped my nerves.I moved swiftly and the dagger's weight in my pocket grounded me. Sweat beaded on my forehead despite the cold air. The tunnel widened into another chamber. Still water stretched endless before me. No ripples, no light. I knew then I had crossed into a realm beyond mortal rules. To my left a soft glow appeared.

MarissaThe wind tore at my jacket and whipped my hair across my face as we stepped out of the hotel. My boots hit the pavement, each step echoing the fear knotting my stomach. One of the elders, Kael, had come to pick us up. He said we needed to get to the dock where anyone who survived the forest and the ancestral sea would wash up.Queen Mallory sat beside me in the back seat. Her hands twisted together in her lap. I could feel her fear radiating like heat. My own terror mirrored it and made my chest tight. Justin was out there fighting for his life and I couldn’t move past the thought that he might not come back. The drive to the dock felt endless. Rain streaked the windows and blurred the caliphate’s glowing ruins outside.Nobody spoke. When we arrived, the sea roared in the distance and waves slapped the rocky shore like angry hands. We climbed out and the wind pushed me back. I steadied myself against the SUV. The elders and the others who had gone with Justin stood near the wa

JustinMy digital watch glowed at 10:30 PM as we stepped away from the caliphate’s edge. The city’s lights faded behind us and the forest loomed ahead.Elder Logan led with his staff tapping the ground in a steady rhythm. The others stayed close behind me and their lanterns swung with each step. My backpack pulled at my shoulders and the silver dagger’s weight pressed against my hip. Sweat already coated my skin and clung to my shirt in the chilly northern air.Logan glanced over his shoulder. “Justin, you’re gonna see some weird shit in here. Otherworldly stuff that doesn’t play nice. Keep your head on straight and don’t let it spook you.”I forced a grin despite the fear curling in my gut like a snake. “Awesome. So it’s like a fucked-up safari. If a ghost pops up I’ll ask it for a selfie.”The elders and healers laughed and the sound cut through the heavy air. It was a weak joke but it loosened the knot of dread we all carried. Inside I was scared shitless. This wasn’t just a trek.

MarissaI stood rooted at the cave’s entrance, watching Justin and the elders disappear into the black mouth of the cave.My body refused to move. Fear coiled in my gut, making it hard to breathe. Queen Mallory stood beside me, her eyes bright with feverish intensity. I felt her fear as sharply as my own.She forced a smile and grabbed my hand. “He’s coming back, Marissa. I know it. Call it a mother’s instinct.”I wanted to believe her, but dread crushed me. My heart pounded so hard I thought it might break my ribs.I squeezed her hand back. We leaned into each other, two women carrying the weight of our terror. The guard assigned to us, a burly man named Torin, waited by the rented SUV. I forced my legs to move, and we climbed into the vehicle. The engine growled to life, headlights cutting through the northern caliphate’s eerie gloom.Inside, the queen’s phone buzzed. She answered it, her voice smooth and diplomatic despite the tension in her posture.“Yes, I understand. Please conv
