The instructor's hand dropped as he shouted. "Begin!"

Cara lunged at me immediately, moving with terrifying speed and I dodged to the side, my heart hammering.

She was bigger than me and I noticed something while watching her step onto the mat.

She was aggressive, always attacking first and that was her weakness.

I kept moving, dodging her blows instead of trying to block them. Each time she came at me, I slipped away.

"Stop running!" Cara snarled, frustration creeping into her voice.

I didn't respond, I just kept dodging in an effort to wear her down.

She came at me again and again, her movements getting sloppier as her anger grew.

"Enough!" she finally snapped.

Then she moved with full speed and I smirked, whispering to myself. "Got you."

Just as she drew close, I shifted my weight and swept my leg low, aiming to trip her.

But at the last second, Cara swerved. Her reflexes kicked in and she cleared my sweeping leg easily.

Her other leg came up and caught mine instead.

Louisa's POVWhen I woke up, my head pounded like someone was using it as a drum. I groaned and tried to sit up, but a gentle hand pushed me back down."Easy now," a soft voice said. "Don't move too quickly."I blinked several times, trying to bring the world into focus. A woman in a white uniform leaned over me."Where am I?" My voice came out scratchy."The Academy infirmary. You hit your head quite badly." She pulled out a small light and shined it in my eyes. "Follow the light with your eyes, please. Don't move your head."I did as she asked, wincing at the brightness."Good. Pupils are responsive." She checked my pulse, then pressed her fingers gently against the back of my skull. I hissed in pain. "You have a nasty bump back there, but no signs of serious concussion. You're very lucky.""Lucky," I muttered. "Right.""Well, someone was watching out for you today," a sarcastic voice said from somewhere to my right.I turned my head and saw Stanley sitting in a chair against the wa

Louisa's POVI tried to pull my arm free. "Actually, I really should…”"Come on, it'll be fun!" One of the girls tightened her grip. "We're all humans too. We just want to have lunch together."I hesitated. These were human students. Like me. Maybe they genuinely wanted to be friendly."We heard what Agnes and her crew did to you," another girl said, her voice sympathetic. "That was so unfair. Spreading those rumors, calling you those names. We felt terrible for you."Surprise washed over me. They knew about that? And they... they felt bad for me?"Really?" I asked."Of course! We humans need to stick together, right?" The blonde girl smiled warmly. "I'm Serena, by the way."The other girls introduced themselves as we walked. Maya and Priya. They all seemed nice. Like they genuinely wanted to get to know me.Maybe I had been wrong to be suspicious."I'm Louisa." I started. They all laughed."We know who you are," Serena said. "Everyone knows about Louisa Fernandez.”Right. Of course t

Louisa's POVWe arrived at school and Kassie was practically bouncing with excitement."The Full Moon Ball!" she said for the third time as we walked through the entrance. "It's going to be amazing this year. They're bringing in a live orchestra, and the decorations are supposed to be incredible, and-""Kassie," I interrupted gently. "I'm not sure I want to go."She stopped walking and stared at me like I'd just said I wanted to drop out of school."What? Why not?"I shrugged, adjusting my bag on my shoulder. "I don't know. I guess I've always seen the Academy as my chance for success. My goal has been to win the Winter's Test. I never really thought about... all this."Kassie's expression softened. She reached out and pinched my cheek. "You're so cute when you're serious.""Hey!" I batted her hand away. "I'm older than you, remember?""By like four years. That doesn't count."We were both laughing when someone stepped in front of us, blocking our path.Mia Charlie stood there with a

Asher’s POVI leaned closer to Estelle, matching her energy. My hand trailed down her jaw slowly, and I felt her breath hitch with anticipation."The problem is," I said softly, "I don't belong to you. And you need to learn to understand boundaries."My voice turned harsh on the last word. I pushed her away firmly.Estelle stumbled back a step, her expression shifting from seductive to annoyed."What's so special about her anyway?" she snapped. "She's skinny and plain!""Stop." The warning in my voice was clear. But Estelle never knew when to quit. “… she's just a human. What could she possibly offer you that I can't? I'm powerful, connected, someone who can actually stand beside you—""I said stop." The growl that came from my chest made her eyes widen.I moved faster than she could react, my hand wrapping around her throat. "What we had in the past is in the past," I said, my voice deadly calm. "Do you understand me? I don't want to repeat myself."Estelle met my gaze, and to my f

Asher’s POVI turned to see my siblings standing in the hallway entrance, all staring at the scene before them.Kassie's eyes were wide with surprise while Stanley's face was blank, but something dark flickered in his expression.I released Louisa immediately, stepping back and putting proper distance between us."She was choking," I said evenly. "I helped her."Kassie's lips curved into a knowing smirk. "Of course you did. Very heroic, brother.""Kassie," I warned."What? I'm just saying it's very kind of you to save your maid from choking." She emphasized the word 'maid' in a way that made it clear she didn't believe that's all Louisa was.Stanley was still staring at me, or rather glaring. What the hell was that about?"Don't you all have school to get to?" I asked, raising a brow in suspicion. "We're going, we're going." Kassie grabbed Louisa's hand. "Come on, Lou. Let's leave the Alpha King to his very important business."Louisa wouldn't meet my eyes as Kassie pulled her away.

I staggered backward, my hand still clutching my wrist where he has grabbed me."Asher, what’s wrong with you!?”He moved so fast I didn't see it coming. One moment he was across the room, the next his hands were in my hair and his mouth was crushing against mine.I should have pushed him away but I melted immediately. His scent surrounded me and his kiss was aggressive, nothing like the one in the forest. And God help me, I liked it.I kissed him back just as desperately, my hands fisting in his shirt. He backed me against the desk, his body pressing against mine. His hand found my breast, squeezing roughly through my uniform. I gasped into his mouth and he swallowed the sound, his tongue claiming every part of me.We roamed each other's bodies frantically. My fingers tangled in his hair. His hands gripped my hips, my waist, sliding under my blazer.I could feel his hardness against my stomach and a moan escaped my throat. His mouth moved to my neck, biting and sucking at the sensiti
