I woke up before dawn and my eyes were gritty and swollen from crying.

For a moment, I just lay there staring at the ceiling theb I sighed and dragged a palm down my face.

I forced myself to sit up and climbed down from the bed. No matter how terrible I felt, I couldn’t keep wallowing in self-pity.

I was a maid now and that was I would ever be.

“Might as well accept it.” I mumbled to myself as I stepped into the bathroom to shower.

I felt numb as I dressed, pulling on the long stockings Yelena had given me. Then the French maid dress I still hated, the ruffles and bows felt ridiculous as always.

But what did it matter anymore? This was my life now.

I left my room and headed to the kitchen. The palace was quiet at this hour, most of the staff weren't up yet and it was good.

I didn't want to see or talk to anyone. My legs carried me straight to the stove and I started building the fire to prepare Asher's morning tea.

I was pulling out the herbs when Yelena's voice called from behind

Asher’s POVI leaned closer to Estelle, matching her energy. My hand trailed down her jaw slowly, and I felt her breath hitch with anticipation."The problem is," I said softly, "I don't belong to you. And you need to learn to understand boundaries."My voice turned harsh on the last word. I pushed her away firmly.Estelle stumbled back a step, her expression shifting from seductive to annoyed."What's so special about her anyway?" she snapped. "She's skinny and plain!""Stop." The warning in my voice was clear. But Estelle never knew when to quit. “… she's just a human. What could she possibly offer you that I can't? I'm powerful, connected, someone who can actually stand beside you—""I said stop." The growl that came from my chest made her eyes widen.I moved faster than she could react, my hand wrapping around her throat. "What we had in the past is in the past," I said, my voice deadly calm. "Do you understand me? I don't want to repeat myself."Estelle met my gaze, and to my f

Asher’s POVI turned to see my siblings standing in the hallway entrance, all staring at the scene before them.Kassie's eyes were wide with surprise while Stanley's face was blank, but something dark flickered in his expression.I released Louisa immediately, stepping back and putting proper distance between us."She was choking," I said evenly. "I helped her."Kassie's lips curved into a knowing smirk. "Of course you did. Very heroic, brother.""Kassie," I warned."What? I'm just saying it's very kind of you to save your maid from choking." She emphasized the word 'maid' in a way that made it clear she didn't believe that's all Louisa was.Stanley was still staring at me, or rather glaring. What the hell was that about?"Don't you all have school to get to?" I asked, raising a brow in suspicion. "We're going, we're going." Kassie grabbed Louisa's hand. "Come on, Lou. Let's leave the Alpha King to his very important business."Louisa wouldn't meet my eyes as Kassie pulled her away.

I staggered backward, my hand still clutching my wrist where he has grabbed me."Asher, what’s wrong with you!?”He moved so fast I didn't see it coming. One moment he was across the room, the next his hands were in my hair and his mouth was crushing against mine.I should have pushed him away but I melted immediately. His scent surrounded me and his kiss was aggressive, nothing like the one in the forest. And God help me, I liked it.I kissed him back just as desperately, my hands fisting in his shirt. He backed me against the desk, his body pressing against mine. His hand found my breast, squeezing roughly through my uniform. I gasped into his mouth and he swallowed the sound, his tongue claiming every part of me.We roamed each other's bodies frantically. My fingers tangled in his hair. His hands gripped my hips, my waist, sliding under my blazer.I could feel his hardness against my stomach and a moan escaped my throat. His mouth moved to my neck, biting and sucking at the sensiti

Kassie was still laughing as we walked through the palace entrance together. We were just getting back from school and she was practically glued to my side, talking endlessly. She was currently sharing a story of how she got into skating and I listened with enthusiasm. "And then I fell face-first into the bushes!" she said, wiping tears from her eyes. "My instructor said I had the worst balance he had ever seen in a student."I couldn't help but laugh. "At least you tried. The first time I went to the skating rink, I didn't even make it five feet before I landed on my butt.""Wait, humans have skating rinks?" Kassie looked genuinely surprised."Yeah, of course we do." I set my bag down by the entrance. "There's one in the lower district. It's not fancy or anything, but it's fun.""I just assumed..." She trailed off, looking uncomfortable."That we don't have fun?" I teased gently. "That we just work and suffer all the time?""Well, when you put it like that, it sounds bad." She fidg

I leaned against the wall of the empty sports auditorium, trying to catch my breath."Thank you," I said again. "Both of you. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't stepped in."Kassie shrugged, examining her nails. "Agnes has needed to be taken down a peg for a while now."Isaac stood beside me, his expression concerned. "Are you okay, Lou? That was pretty brutal.""I'm fine." I wasn't, but saying it out loud might make me cry again. "I just... why do they hate me so much? I haven't done anything to them.""You're human," Kassie said bluntly. "And you got into the Academy when hundreds of wolves didn't. That's enough.""Kassie," Isaac said, his voice chiding."What? I'm just being honest." She looked at me. "They see you as someone who doesn't deserve to be here. Someone who only got in because of... special circumstances."I laughed bitterly. "You mean because they think I slept with your brother.""Did you?" Kassie asked, her eyes sharp."Kassie!" Isaac looked horrifie

Stanley's POVI leaned against the wall, watching the scene unfold with mild amusement.Agnes had cornered Louisa in the middle of the hallway. A crowd had gathered, phones out, eager for drama.“… spread your legs for the right wolf," Agnes was saying, her voice dripping with venom.I smirked. It was about time someone put the human in her place.Isaac was trying to defend her, of course. Standing there with his pathetic sense of honor, like it would make any difference. The boy was too soft. Always had been.Agnes's friends circled closer, their voices getting louder and more accusatory. While Louisa just stood there, looking small and vulnerable.Good. Let her learn what it really meant to be here. Let her understand that she didn't belong, no matter what strings Asher pulled. But then Kassie appeared. She pushed through the crowd with the kind of authority that made people step aside automatically. Her face was hard, and her eyes blazing."Agnes," Kassie said, her voice cutting t
