Chapter 6
The Veilrend Pack
(Renrik’s POV)
The wound behind my shoulder was deeper than I thought. The silver had poisoned my skin, resisting my natural healing. The burned flesh stung as I slowly made my way back to my pack, replaying the fight over and over in my head, trying to pinpoint where I had fucked up.
I should never have given the demon the opportunity to get to Seraphine. If I had been quicker - stronger - I could have smashed the bastard’s head in before he thought about using her as a hostage.
He surprised me with how slippery he was. He moved like a snake, with elegant twists and rapid maneuvers. He should have had some demonic powers, but aside from summoning that blasted silver knife, I didn’t see anything that he was truly capable of. I should have been able to kill him for underestimating me… but instead, I let him escape with my Luna.
And he wasn’t an idiot. He knew better than to make the same mistake twice. I had to prepare for the next time we faced off, because I knew he’d be doing the same.
The ancient stone wall enclosing my little village came into view. It was strictly Werewolf territory. No demons. No humans. No fairies, or witches, or vampires, or whatever the fuck else might lurk beyond our borders. Just werewolves. We were fortunate enough to have protection etched into the wall to shield us from unwanted visitors.
That thin veil of enchantment earned us our pack name; The Veilrend.
Sat on the wall was a figure with a mess of brown curls. Bright, orange eyes fixed on me and I could finally make out the familiar, welcome face of my second in command. My Beta - Kenton Shadowclaw.
“The love-struck knight returns!” Kenton announced before leaping from his perch. Even in his humanoid form, he was agile and dexterous.
His friendly smile faltered when he saw my slumping posture. I was dragging myself up the hill to him; not only because my body was injured, but because my pride was limping home, too. When I made it to my friend, I shifted into my human persona.
Kenton was six-foot-one. I was much taller. He had a slender body, reminiscent of an athlete. I was bulkier; more muscle and more command to my presence. We both had our strengths and weaknesses, and because of them, we complimented each other perfectly.
“You look rough, buddy,” Kenton noted, giving me a half-smile.
“Still better looking than you,” I growled back.
Kenton scoffed. “You wish,” he said, flicking his brown curls out of his pretty-boy face. “But seriously, your shoulder looks screwed up. C’mon, let's sort you out.”
He turned to lead the way into Veilrend, but I gripped his shoulder and stopped him in his tracks. “Kent,”
“Ren?”
“I fucked up.”
Kenton didn’t reply straight away. He picked his words carefully - always diplomatic and thoughtful. One of his strengths. One of my weaknesses.
“Look,” he breathed. “I have a shit-ton of questions, but they can wait until you’ve seen a doctor. Obviously, something went wrong. You reek of, like, rotten eggs or something, but there’s no point in us talking while you’re angry and sulking and bleeding. Let’s go.”
“We should go round the back so no-one sees that I’m injured,” I suggested.
Kenton rolled his eyes. “Now’s not the time to be worrying about your ‘tough-guy’ image,”
“Kent,” I barked, not in the mood for his jokes. “You know why they shouldn’t see me like this.” I was the status symbol for the pack. An unrelenting force that no other wolf in Veilrend had managed to even scratch. For them to see a deep gash in my shoulder…
“Right,” Kenton’s frown deepened. “We don’t want the others to panic.”
~*~*~
“That should do for now,” Doctor Nyxson packed away most of her equipment, bar a small bottle.
I gave the gauze on my shoulder a onceover. Happy with her work, I went ahead and pulled a fresh, black t-shirt over my chest, courtesy of my brother, Roderick.
“I’ll change the bandage in two days if it hasn’t healed by then, but if it starts to bleed or ooze, let me know and I’ll change it sooner.”
“Thanks, Doctor Nyxson,” I gave her a weak smile, but my kindness was met with a glare from her.
“Just call me ‘Yvonne’, Renrik. I’m going to be your sister-in-law in three months. You don’t have to be so formal with me.”
“You’re on the clock,” I muttered lazily.
“If I was, we’d be in my clinic right now. Not in your bloody guestroom. Call me ‘Yvonne’.”
“You’re in my guestroom for the sake of patient confidentiality, Doctor Nyxson. I had to pick someone I could trust, and who better than my brother’s, beautiful, bride-to-be?” It wasn’t that I disliked Yvonne - I thought she was a great fit for Roderick. However, she pushed my buttons. She was a bit too comfortable in a position of power, probably thinking that while I remained unbonded, she needed to step up as a temporary Luna.
Yvonne didn’t reply. She picked up the bottle she'd left out. Her dark-green eyes brimmed with stern warning as she looked at me. “This is to be taken twice a day. Once in the morning and once before bed. Don’t skip it. It's to make sure there are no lasting effects of the silver in your blood.” Out came that motherly tone of hers, despite being a year younger than me. Although she did look older than twenty-two.
I took the bottle with a curt nod. “Understood. Thanks. Send my brother and Kenton in on your way out, would you?”
“Of course, Alpha Duskborne,” she mocked me. A little payback for refusing to call her Yvonne while she treated me, but I let it slide. I wasn't in the mood to chastise her, and it would only result in an argument between me and my brother.
I saw her kiss Roderick in the doorway as she left. Her cropped, purple hair was a nice match against his onyx locks, much like my own.
It got me thinking about Seraphine. Her hair was almost white, kissed by the Moon Goddess herself. Seraphine was smaller than Yvonne, almost fragile-looking. A part of me worried that I’d shatter Seraphine if I mated with her.
I closed my eyes and recalled her scent. It was a powerful, intoxicating aroma. A dash of vanilla that drowned out even the revolting stink of the demon. I wanted so desperately to hold her against me, to feel that soft, pale skin against my sour scars.
I wanted to protect her. Even if she rejected me in the end or ran away; I needed to set her free…
“Take care, my Moonbeam,” Roderick whispered to his fiancée, and I spotted Kenton gagging animatedly in the background.
Yvonne shoved past Beta Kenton and grumbled at him, “You’re such a child.”
I waited until the door was shut and I could hear her footsteps fade away down the hall. The Beta and Gamma wolves turned to me with grave expressions. Kenton and Roderick wanted answers and I wasn’t going to keep secrets from either of them.
“You fought a demon, didn’t you?” Roderick got straight to the point, taking off his glasses to clean the lens on his crisp, white shirt. “The stench is all over you.”
“Is that what it is?” Kenton’s eyes widened. “The rotten egg smell? It’s what demons smell like?”
“Sulfur,” I explained. “It’s similar to such a rotten smell, yeah. And yes, Roderick. I encountered a demon.”
The glasses were back on his nose, slightly magnifying those narrow, innocent, blue eyes of his. Roderick was someone else I wanted to protect. My delicate little brother, with such a slender frame and a slight limp he’d been born with.
But there was a bark to his voice; a commanding strength to it that I all too often forgot existed. He locked eyes with me and asked in that very tone,
“Was it the one who killed Dad?”

Chapter 7Duskborne(Seraphine’s POV)“The Duskborne family,” Diana had laid herself down on my bed and folded her arms behind her head. “They’re old blood. Like, old, old blood.”“Okay?” Amber and I eyed each other, intrigued but confused.“I heard stories of them back when I was a kid on the Surface. Ask the older Hellhounds here and they’ll tell you the same thing I will. The Duskbornes are selfish monsters.” There was a flicker of a smile on Diana’s lips. She enjoyed slandering my mate; jealous, most likely. I didn’t dwell on her bitterness and at first, I didn’t take her words seriously.Amber furrowed her brow, giving Diana a look that silently told her to behave herself. “What are you talking about?”“Amber, have you ever heard of the Veilrend pack?” Diana stayed lying down, her head facing my friend.“Veil-rend? Uh,” She rubbed her chin as she turned the name over her tongue. “Oh! Yes! I… I have...” Her excitement over remembering immediately gave way to uncertainty as her gaze
Chapter 8Go to Hell! (Renrik’s POV)My brother asked me if the demon chaining up Seraphine was the same one that killed our father. “Honestly, I don’t know, but he’s a demon traipsing around with a wolf under his thumb. He admitted to killing our kind. I’d say it’s fucking likely it’s him.”“If he killed Dad, he’s powerful. You’re lucky you escaped with just a scratch,” Roderick gestured to my bandaged shoulder. I held my head high, letting my pride get the better of me. “I nearly killed him.” “And he won’t let you get that close to killing him again.”“Where are you going with this, Rod?” I squared up to him, my shadow engulfing my Gamma brother.“I know how you think, Ren,” Roderick didn’t recoil no matter how close I got. He would never be afraid of me, he’s seen me at my best and worst. I doubted there was anything I could do that would shock him anymore. “You’ll charge off without thinking things through. If you want your Luna, you need to be prepared. It will take time-”“T
Chapter 9Dream come true(Seraphine’s POV)Sleep didn’t come easily, but eventually I nodded off with tears staining my cheeks. I had expected nightmares. Dark visions of Hellhounds mating me while Valefar held me down with that polite, fake smile plastered on his lips. What I actually dreamt was quite different. I found myself standing on a platform of prismatic clouds. A warmth greeted me, but not like the dry heat of Hell. This warmth was comforting, like an embrace from a forgotten friend. I felt so light and airy that I wanted to fall back into the mix of colours and leave my mind to swim in the magical weave. My clothes had changed. My usual pants and top were traded for a long, flowing dress. A shimmering, pearlescent sheen to the fabric made me feel like a princess. I twirled around, enjoying the freedom, right up until I saw a mountainous figure watching me, mouthing my name. I froze. “Renrik?” I’d only seen his wolf form. Chapter 10JeremyFeeling cold in Hell wasn’t possible, yet I chilled when I stepped outside with so much skin exposed. Diana and Valefar turned to me as my high heels clicked against the marble steps. Diana was mortified by my bikini-esque costume, but Valefar looked ecstatic. “Sera! Who knew you’d scrub up so well?” Valefar rubbed his hands together before skipping over to me. “You look gorgeous,”“She looks nervous,” Diana pointed out. “I look like a hooker,” I helpfully added, slightly shocked that the word even made it past my lips.“Ah, well,” Valefar waved away my concern. “You’re not a hooker,” his voice was silky and sincere, right up until he added, “you’re not getting paid for it, after all!”I tried to conceal my sigh, but didn’t do a very good job. “My Hellhounds are all lined up for us. This way, this way,” Valefar snaked an arm around my waist and guided me towards the West Wing gardens. He was imbued with the aura of a sketchy car salesman. As usual, this was pure
Chapter 11Diana(Diana’s POV)I stared at Seraphine lying in the pool of Jeremy’s blood. White hair strewn around her, tears and plasma maring her gentle features; she looked like a wounded Goddess and I hated her all the more for it. What made me hate her beyond redemption though, was the way Valefar looked at her. I had never seen such an expression on his face. The realm had shaken when Seraphine raised her voice and sparks of light crackled around her. Valefar was scared of Sera, but there was something else in those intense, amethyst eyes of his. Delight. Arousal. That was new. My master had never looked at Seraphine as though she was anything more than a fancy gun with his finger hovering over the trigger. Ever since she turned eighteen, it was like she was reborn anew in the eyes of everyone. It disgusted me. “Diana,” Valefar’s voice stole my attention. “Bring Sera back to her room. I’ll select a mate without her.” “Of course, Master,” I bowed my head to him and started
Chapter 1 HellhoundMy skin hissed against the silver blade pressed against my throat. The searing pain brought tears to my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I couldn’t cry - not when I was seeing my fated mate for the first time. I didn’t even know his name, but I felt that invisible thread weave itself around my heart and tighten when he stepped closer. His ice-blue eyes betrayed no emotion, especially in his wolf form. Even though he was larger than any wolf I had ever seen, with pitch dark fur, he blended with the shadows seamlessly. My mate was drinking in every tiny detail of not just me, but the demon holding a knife to my neck...Valefar; the demon who had slaughtered my pack and raised me to be his own personal Hellhound. I could see that my mate wanted nothing more than to claw Valefar’s heart out of his chest, but if even one whisker twitched, Valefar would end my life in an instant.“That’s it,” Valefar’s shrill voice sounded utterly delighted. “Stay where you are and
Chapter 2The BondAfter the imps scrubbed me clean, they told me I could soak for as long as I liked. I took them up on that offer, if only so I could be left alone, to conquer the swirling blizzard of thoughts and emotions inside.I sank beneath the hot, milky water in hopes it would soothe me. It was deep enough for me to float; for my body to feel suspended in time and freed on a spiritual level. It would only last for as long as I could hold my breath, but I savored every second of being one with the water.A lot had happened in the span of a month. My birthday was early April, and this year happened to be when I turned eighteen. It was that day when everything changed. In the early hours of the morning, I woke up and was overwhelmed by an intense sensation. It started in my chest, as though something within was trying to crack my ribs open and claw its way to freedom. Then it quickly spread through my veins, clouding any coherent thought in my head and making every nerve in my b
Chapter 3The Price of Loyalty - Part One“I saw the state Valefar returned home in,” Diana Warfur seethed. “Battered, bruised, bleeding! Why didn’t you protect him?! Your sole purpose up on the Surface is to protect our Master!” Diana yelled, spit flecking at my face and for a split second I thought she was going to hit me again.“I tried,” I rasped.“Liar!”“I’m not lying! Do you even know what happened on the Surface?” My building rage finally got the better of me and I shouted back at her. “Have you even spoken to Valefar, or are you just making up your own stories?! Sit down, Diana, and I’ll tell you exactly what happened to your precious Master.”Diana stepped back. She still looked ready to rip me to shreds, but at least some part of her wanted to hear me out.I decided to push my luck a little. “I want to tell Amber what happened as well,”“I’m not waiting for you to gather an audience, Sera!” Diana’s hand launched towards me and she grabbed a fistful of my t-shirt. Chapter 5Demon Vs Werewolf“We haven’t crossed paths before,” the wolf - Renrik, now that I know his name, spoke assuredly as he began to walk a wide circle around myself and Valefar. “If we had, you wouldn’t have walked away breathing.”“How stereotypically werewolf of you. So violent, even though you insist you don’t know me.” Valefar brushed his blonde bangs off of his face and sighed. “However, I admit it. I don’t recognize your voice, now that I’ve heard more of it. You do remind me of someone, though. Bah, but a lot of you wolves look and sound the same. I’ve killed so many of you over the years, it’s hard to recall who I might be thinking of…”The demon was playing with Renrik, trying to coax a savage reaction out of him. Renrik wasn’t a fool; he didn’t take the ba
Chapter 4The Price of Loyalty - Part TwoI was just as confused and concerned as Valefar was. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. I had no explanation for why I lit up like a pretty beacon, but I could hazard an educated guess. When the light streamed from me, I felt that feral magnetism again. The tether to my fated mate had strengthened and the release of light felt like a desperate signal to him. Going to the Surface, being on the same plane as Renrik, meant that everything Hell had been suppressing since I turned eighteen, burst out of me in a glorious light show. That beam of light really was a beacon for Renrik to find me.I didn’t voice my theories to Valefar. I parted my lips and shrugged at him innocently. “I didn’t do anything deliberately,” and I wasn’t lying. “Sorry, Master.”“You’ve been acting so weird since your birthday,” Valefar grumbled and fixed his collar, ever obsessed with his image. When he turned away, I managed to catch what he added under his b
