Byron’s POV
When Mo sent me that mind link in a panic I knew I couldn’t just leave her to it. Yet I didn’t trust my ‘collateral’ not to run. Sending my guards after her would only lead to unpleasantness – for her. She wasn’t ready for the kind of punishment I usually dished out, healthy or not.
On the point of stuffing her panties into an empty drawer I reconsidered and dumped them in my laundry basket instead. I’m not that much of a pervert, though degradation is one of my sweeter pastimes when I’m not actually hands on.
The beauty in the next bedroom intrigued me. Maybe having Ricky owe me wasn’t such a bad thing.
Currently Alpha Bell was not in my good books, failing to answer my texts. Seizing Liz with his blessing was my way of ensuring he returned to take care of his pack rather than do a runner. The alternative reason for him being incommunicado was something I didn’t want to dwell on.
My sister rolled her eyes at my interference, liking none of this. She was often moody and shouted at the servants constantly. They forgave her, as did I, though for very different reasons.
Having a choice made me feel good about my magnanimity. Dad sure wouldn’t have tolerated her tantrums for long. I have to say she was on borrowed time with me. Perhaps I could kill two birds with the one stone.
All females had a nurturing instinct, didn’t they?
Seeing the woman who was virtually a stranger to me admiring her reflection in the full length mirror, I smirked. Because she didn’t know I was there.
Her flushed cheeks signalled I had her at a disadvantage and I could tell she was mortified when I announced my presence. That nightgown was extremely short. Yet still she was obedient, going in search of mom’s wrapper. Those cute mules only made me smile. It told me there was a fun side to her, one I wanted to explore more fully.
I made a mystery tour out of our journey to the underground room, even enquiring after her mood. Though I wasn’t so churlish as to allow her to fall once we were on the last leg, holding out my arm to assist her.
The sudden commotion made her start.
“Ssh,” a woman’s voice said soon after.
“It’s okay,” I told her. “All will shortly be revealed.”
Suddenly the game I’d been playing wasn’t so amusing any more. I was uncertain myself.
Mom would have caved in at once. She was a sucker for a sob story. Yet I couldn’t force Liz to do this, it had to be of her own free will or not at all.
When we reached the playroom at the bottom of the stairs her mouth formed a perfect O.
“I wasn’t expecting this,” she said.
Mo looked up from her position on the floor with heartbreak in her eyes. Then her face turned hostile.
“What’s she doing here?”
My sister could be such a bitch.
“Coming to our rescue. I hope,” I said.
Liz turned to me.
“I didn’t know you had pups.”
“I don’t, Lizzy.”
“Then who do they belong to? Where’s their mom?” She narrowed her eyes as if she were about to say something derogatory.
Mo beat me to it.
“You’re looking at her,” she said. “Except we haven’t bonded. I just – can’t.”
The pup asleep on her lap seemed to contradict that. Zane was normally hyperactive and aggressive, unlike his sibling, Zoe.
“Is this what you wanted me for, Alpha?” Liz asked.
I made a joke of it, causing her to colour up.
“Dressed like that?”
“Stop it, By. This isn’t either the time or the place.”
I took the rebuke on the chin. Sometimes an Alpha has to think about the bigger picture.
My hostage surprised me by kneeling beside the array of fluffy bunnies. Zoe was particular about colours so they were mainly purple or yellow.
“Hello, my name’s Lizzy. What’s yours?” she asked my adorably shy niece.
I hid a grin. Was that a Freudian slip, or what?
The toddler took a few steps towards the playpen, losing her pacifier in the process. She shrieked as if it were the end of the world.
Soon she was being cuddled by a total stranger who rocked her gently and smoothed her auburn curls away from her forehead.
This was far better than I could have possibly imagined.
“How would you like to be their chief nursemaid, Lizzy?” I asked.

Liz’s POV
My heart plummeted when I saw Mo. Soon I was feeling sorry for her. An auntie of mine had gone through something similar with her firstborn.
I had to do something even though pups were outside my comfort zone. Was it because I wanted to impress the Alpha?
Recalling past visits to our pack’s collective nursery, I couldn’t help but wonder why these two were hidden away. On those occasions I had been glad of the Omegas’ presence and ashamed of my tokenism. I wished I could do more.
When Alpha Byron made his stunning proposition I really didn’t know what to say.
“I’m not the most experienced nanny,” I told him, with a glance at Mo. “But I’m willing to give it a go, with help.”
“My sister will be your friend for life, won’t you?” he prompted.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” the woman said.
There was vomit all down her front and one of her dangly earrings was missing. I took pity on her.
“Let’s get you cleaned up.”
She didn’t resist, even ribbing the Alpha about his newfound duties.
“Beneath you, much?”
Before we made our way back up to the kitchen area, she deposited the male pup in the playpen. He was still soundly asleep while his sibling was now holding onto the bars even though I’d laid her down.
“You’ll have to show me where to go,” I said, unsure how to address her and not wanting to cause offence.
“Don’t tempt me, girl.”
“Hey, I’m doing you a favour,” I protested.
She sighed, heavily.
“Take no notice, I’m just up to here,” – she raised a hand to her forehead – "with everything.”
“I know how that feels.”
“No, you don’t. But thanks, Lizzy. I’m grateful.”
“It’s Liz,” I told her.
She gave me a puzzled frown, fiddling with her earring and letting out a squeal when she realised her loss.
“Shit. Trevor gave them to me.”
“First things first,” I said. “Where’s the nearest washroom?”
We ended up in her bedroom on the first floor. I should have known she would have an en suite.
That was when I learned about her missing mate.
“He didn’t even know I was pregnant,” she sobbed.
I felt awkward about comforting someone so prickly yet it had to be done.
There was a tap at the door, which startled me but not Mo. It was the Alpha, who had obviously mind linked her.
“Sal’s with them now,” he said. “Get some rest, sis. You look awful.”
I told her goodnight before following him upstairs.
“Alpha, have you thought about having a crèche?” I asked.
“What a brilliant idea.”
His sarcasm was wounding, but I was used to the like from Ricky.
“You mean someone objected?”
“Mo herself.”
“But that’s – ”
I stopped myself just in time. It wasn’t my place to criticise, especially when my status here was uncertain at best.
“Crazy? I know. Maybe she’ll listen to you.”
I took a deep breath.
“Alpha, I don’t think I should take this on. I mean, if the twins bond with me and then I go back to Moon Tides, they could be irreparably damaged.”
That was when he was brutally honest with me.
“Face facts, Lizzy,” he said, smoothing a stray tendril of hair behind my ear. “With the amount of money Ricky owes me you’re going nowhere for a while.”
Liz’s POVI couldn’t think straight at that point.“You wouldn’t – he didn’t – ?”“Join me for breakfast. I usually eat up here. What would you like?”I couldn’t help myself, I yawned.“Can I let you know later, Alpha? All I want to do right now is sleep for a week.”“I’m afraid that’s out of the question,” he said.“Maybe an hour?” I wheedled. Was I flirting with him? This had to stop, right now.“You’re not listening, Lizzy, and it’s making my wolf angry.”“Is that how it works? I wouldn’t know.” I saw his face and launched into a hasty explanation about how I didn’t hit it off with mine.“Ridiculous. Impossible. Untrue.”“I only wish it were.”“Look, Lizzy, my order is a standing one with the Omegas. I like toast and a boiled egg. Shall I tell them to double up?”I froze, only now realising how it was bound to look, me sitting there in his bedroom with him. Was there a table or did he usually eat in bed? My wolf either didn’t know or wouldn’t say.“Yes, please. What time?”“Fifteen
Byron’s POVI had to admit the jeans suited her yet she had deliberately flouted my order. I wouldn’t tolerate that. So what if she was weary and troubled. I hadn’t been in any other state since I became Alpha. It went with the territory of ruling a pack, something I guessed she was no stranger to these days.Had I seen her at that mating ball last year? I doubted it. Because Seb would have led me to bed her. I was more cautious. He’s my alter ego, taken from my middle name. Gregor might have a split personality or something. Goddess knows what’s wrong with Liz’s wolf, Tanya. We’d been thrown together at a difficult time all because of her happy-go-lucky brother.Mo was almost out of her mind with grief and tended to take it out on her inferiors. The investigation I’d started without telling her was well under way, though no leads as yet.Trevor was the Alpha of a southern pack who’d chosen to live with us, allowing his younger twin, Tony, to take over. He’d gone missing shortly after
Liz’s POVI decided a trip to the kitchen was a good idea. I was hungry now and would only get lost if I tried to escape. Sure, I knew enough not to venture into the desert. Other than that my sense of direction was hopeless. Orienteering was a complete mystery to me. And the Alpha would only drag me back, personally or otherwise. He had granted me the right to keep in daily communication with our Beta so I could serve them remotely. It may just be enough until any takeover.Hoping I wouldn’t receive a hostile reception, I headed downstairs in the jeans he seemed to dislike and a long sleeved blouse. My hair was piled up in a messy bun, though there was little I could do about the dark circles. I’d brought cosmetics but didn’t feel inclined to use them now, not when I was probably going back to bed afterwards. The Alpha had mentioned a garden. Perhaps I could sit out there, though I wasn’t about to test my boundaries tonight.I encountered Beta Lucas in the corridor.“Going somewhere,
Liz’s POV If there’s one thing I can’t stand among all nature’s creatures it’s a snake. Sure, spiders fall into the creepy crawly category and I hate close contact with them but by and large we go our separate ways. A reptile isn’t cold blooded for nothing and tends to strike first and fail to regret later. “Is it poisonous, Alpha?” “Very. If you hear a rattle … ” “Stop winding her up, By,” Mo said. “Oscar’s harmless and ancient. He’s a milk snake, they’re non-venomous.” “He likes his rodents, though.” Was he testing me? I decided it wouldn’t hurt to respond in kind. “You’d better watch out then, Alpha,” I said. Mo covered her mouth with her hand, trying to control her spluttering. “Right,” he said. “Upstairs with you. Now!” And I realised I’d crossed a line. “Lighten up, By. Liz didn’t mean to insult you.” “Yes, she did. You know I don’t accept that from anyone. Especially when there’s a witness.” “What are you intending to do to her?” “Make her handle Oscar,” he said.
Liz’s POVByron wouldn’t allow me to return to my room other than to fetch a nightie. I was dreading having to share his bed. He’d vowed not to take advantage but I doubted he would be able to keep his hands off me simply because I was female and available.Maybe I was doing him a disservice, but Ricky wouldn’t have hesitated to claim one thing and do another. It had happened before to several unfortunate Omegas within our pack and even the late Gamma’s daughter had to be consoled by none other than yours truly. The only fortunate thing was that his liaisons hadn’t resulted in any illegitimate pups so far. Or maybe that was a worrying thing in terms of our pack’s future.Yet if we were to merge on my marriage or even before and Alpha Richard was still missing, would it really matter?I bit my lip, feeling bad for thinking like that. Tossing and turning, the covers corkscrewed around me, I was unprepared for the tirade from my mate on waking. It was four a.m. and he hadn’t had a wink o
Byron’s POV“What are we doing today, Alpha?”Her soft voice roused me from my bitter thoughts and fetched the imp to the surface.“I will be drowning in paperwork, as usual. You, Lizzy, will be sunning yourself in the garden.”“Oh?”She raised a barely-there brow which I guessed was down to her colouring rather than a salon.“Mo’s bringing the pups out of confinement. I thought you might like to join them.”“Of course. That sounds delightful,” she said.I sensed her enthusiasm was real and only hoped it wasn’t because she wouldn’t be spending all of the time with me.“Philip will be close by, either him or Ned. I can’t remember now.”“Ned?”“One of the guards who brought you here.”“Okay. Should I change again?”I considered that.“Just add an apron.” Which brought me to the devilish part. “You’ll be cooking later, Lizzy. We have important visitors coming for dinner tonight. I want you to prepare a soufflé.”The look on her face was priceless.“Alpha, I may be no stranger to the kitc
Liz’s POVHis eyes had darkened to stormy now. I turned and ran but it appeared he was able to lock the outer door remotely. I heard a loud click just before I grappled with the doorknob.“Please, Byron, don’t do this,” I begged.“We’re mates, Lizzy. I need to introduce you to my tastes.”So all this was a test? Not one I was keen on passing in any way.“Are you going to whip me in there?”“I knew it,” he said. “You’ve been in this kind of dungeon before.”“Not willingly,” I told him.It was hard to admit but I didn’t want him to think I enjoyed this type of thing. I didn’t.His eyes narrowed.“Do you have a safe word?”“There was no point.”His growl was frightening. I took a step back.“I’m not angry with you, Lizzy.”“You could have fooled me,” I muttered.“Come closer.”He beckoned me with his finger, much like my uncle used to do. I had so many triggers yet, somehow, the dark side of Byron – Seb – didn’t repel me. Why was that? I wondered. His lips grazed my neck as he instructed
Byron’s POVI knew it would be wrong to smirk and employed my best poker face.“No, because you’re bound to get things wrong again. Hopefully on purpose, just like the bratty sub you are. And if you’re not, I’m going to train you up to be one. Because that’s what I like and I think you will, too.”“Is it because I’m stubborn? Ricky always says that.”I closed my eyes.“Please tell me he wasn’t a part of it in any way.”“What? Goddess, no.”“I prefer to say you’re mine to shape,” I said. She seemed to like the sound of that. “Drink that water.”I was pleased to see she didn’t hesitate. It made me proud. So, most of my burning questions had been answered. I had still to discover if we were compatible sexually. There was no rush. I told her that, adding that I could always summon one of the Omegas to satisfy me.Liz surprised me considerably by objecting strongly.“I would hate knowing you were with someone else now that I know we’re fated mates. They say it’s painful.”“Does this mean y
