Chapter 2

Author: Randy Mason
At night, Erwin knocked on my door.

"Alyssa wants stew. Go make some."

I looked down and silently walked to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, I prepared the ingredients mechanically. Cold water ran over my hands. My fingertips felt numb from the chill.

Suddenly, I recalled how Erwin used to love the stew I made.

Back then, he liked to wrap his arms around my waist from behind and say, "My future mate is such a good cook."

The steam blurred my vision.

I raised a hand and wiped the liquid from the corner of my eyes. I didn't know if it was from the steam or my own tears.

Three hours later, I stood outside their door with the finished stew.

"Come in." Erwin's voice came from inside.

When I pushed the door open, I saw Alyssa leaning against the headboard while Erwin sat beside the bed. He was peeling fruit for her.

He had a very particular way of peeling fruit. The peel came off in one long unbroken strip. It was something he had once learned specially for me.

"The stew is ready." I set the bowl on the nightstand.

Alyssa lazily picked up a spoon and took a sip. She immediately frowned.

"It's too salty! What on earth were you thinking?"

I pursed my lips. "I'll make it again."

When the second bowl was brought over, Alyssa only tasted a mouthful before pushing it away.

"It's as bland as water. Make it again!"

When the third bowl arrived, Alyssa had barely touched the rim before she shrieked.

"How am I supposed to drink something this hot?"

She suddenly raised her hand. The entire bowl of boiling stew splashed all over me.

"Ahh!" I cried out. My chest turned red instantly.

"Erwin!" Alyssa held up her slightly reddened fingers. "It hurts!" She cried out tearfully.

Erwin's expression darkened. He kicked me aside. "Do you have a death wish?"

The kick sent me stumbling backward. My back slammed into the wall and my vision went black with pain. "It wasn't me. She knocked it over–"

"Shut up!" Erwin snapped with a cold gaze. "How dare you talk back to me?"

He pressed the call bell. Two guards immediately appeared at the door.

"Lock her in the dungeon for a day," Erwin ordered coldly. "Watch her closely. Don't give her a chance to kill herself."

As I was dragged away, the last thing I saw was Erwin carefully holding Alyssa's hand while gently blowing on it.

The moment the dungeon door slammed shut, the biting wolfsbane seeped into my bones.

I curled up in the corner and trembled uncontrollably.

The wolfsbane slowly spread through my limbs, and I began to lose consciousness.

"Lara! Lara!"

In a haze, I thought I heard Erwin's voice. It was filled with a panic I had never heard before.

It had to be a hallucination.

The werewolf he was now would never be that worried about me.

When I woke up again, the strong smell of herbs told me I was in the healer's den.

I heard the healer's stern voice nearby.

"Alpha, Lara is in an extremely bad condition. She only has a few days left–"

"Healer." I suddenly spoke in a hoarse voice. "I know my own body very well."

The room instantly fell silent. Erwin stood by the window. With the light behind him, I couldn't see his expression clearly.

"As long as she doesn't die, that's enough," he said coldly. "You don't need to tell me anything else. I don't care."

The moment he finished speaking, his phone rang.

I saw his expression soften instantly.

"Alyssa, be good. I'll come and keep you company right away."

After ending the call, Erwin left without looking back.

With difficulty, I picked up my phone and opened the pack's message feed.

Alyssa had just posted an update. The picture showed Erwin sitting beside her bed.

"It's just a tiny burn, but someone got so nervous he stayed by my side all night without sleeping. If it weren't for paying medical fees for that burdensome shewolf, he wouldn't even have left!"

Looking at the gentle expression in Erwin's eyes in the photo, I understood everything.

The reason I was sent to the healer's den was purely incidental.

I pressed a hand to my chest. My wolf spirit let out a mournful cry.

There were only six more days until the life-exchange curse placed inside me eight years ago activated.

Her throat burned, and darkness crept into view.Only when she was on the verge of suffocating did the guards finally release her.Soaked to the bone, she flailed weakly like a fish thrown ashore. She was struggling in a futile manner.Erwin watched coldly without the slightest trace of emotion."Are you willing to apologize to Lara now?" he asked nonchalantly.Alyssa was barely alive. Panic filled her eyes as she nodded frantically."Yes! I'll apologi

Lara had suddenly vanished. Erwin searched the entire pack, but there was no trace of her anywhere. He was like a mad wolf. He wanted to turn the entire territory upside down to find her.No matter where he looked, he still couldn't find her. Then, for some reason, a thought surfaced in his mind. 'The cold storage.'Inside the empty cold storage, there was only a single coffin. Two words were written clearly on it.[Lara's Tomb.]"There's no way! Lara, you haven't become my mate yet. How can you die? I won't allow it!"With a thud, he dropped to his knees before the coffin."Lara, I'm here to save you!" Erwin forced a smile that made him look insane. He pushed the coffin lid open, only to see Lara sleeping peacefully inside. She was silent and motionless. He could neither hear her breathing or feel her wolf spirit's heartbeat. She would never wake again.Erwin picked up her cold body and let out a broken howl. "Lara! Wake up! Look at me once more! Please! I'm begging you!"

After a long time, Erwin felt as if the blood in his entire body had nearly frozen. He finally stood up stiffly and left the cold storage. The moment he closed the door, he forced himself to look coldly at Lara lying in the ice coffin. "Stay here. I won't come to see you again," he said calmly. The only thing that answered him was the sound of the wind. After a brief silence, Erwin's expression darkened. Even he didn't know what he had been expecting.Did he expect her to wake up the next second and respond to him? That was impossible. She was dead. No miracle would happen. He pursed his lips tightly. Feeling angry for no reason, he returned to Lara's room. There was a blue dress she had worn on their first date. Even now, it still carried her scent like it did back then.Erwin buried his face in the dress and inhaled deeply. At that instant, he started recalling the past.It had only been a step in his revenge plan, but he still couldn't stop himself from feeling nervous that

"I'm just letting you experience what it feels like when your wolf spirit shatters."With that, Erwin released Alyssa in disgust. He cast her a look of contempt and walked away without another glance.Away from the altar, he shut his eyes and leaned weakly against the wall. He took a few deep breaths.Alyssa was being tortured inside, yet he felt nothing at all. After learning she wasn't the one who had truly saved him, he even felt an inexplicable sense of relief.Seeing multiple incoming calls from Alyssa's parents on his phone, Erwin finally answered impatiently.Their voices came through. They sounded concerned, but they tried to mask it with friendliness."Erwin, weren't you and Alyssa supposed to come back for dinner and discuss the marking ceremony? It's already been two days. Why haven't you returned? Did something happen?""Nothing happened. Alyssa will never become my mate," Erwin replied coldly. There was a brief silence on the other end. They clearly couldn't belie

As expected, Alyssa had never repaired anyone's wolf spirit. There was no curse in her body either.Rage surged in Erwin's dark eyes. He clenched his fists and walked toward Alyssa with murderous intent. With her lie exposed, she was terrified out of her mind. Still in her hospital gown, she turned and ran."Alyssa!" Erwin snarled through clenched jaws. The guards behind him ran forward and pinned her to the ground.Forced face-down against the floor, she looked utterly disheveled, yet she kept trying to argue."Erwin, I didn't mean to lie to you! I can explain! You said I was the one you loved most. I just told a white lie. You can understand that, right?"I only did it because I like you! Besides, you were the one who mistook me for your savior first!"I just went along with it. Can't you forgive me?"She reached out and tried to grab the hem of his pants. The next second, Erwin stepped on her fingers with a blank expression and ground them hard beneath his foot."You want

Erwin's gaze turned colder as he spoke in a chilling voice."There are so many healers here. Not all of them could possibly know Lara's dad. Let them examine you one by one. And if that's still not enough, there are plenty of healers in the pack who specialize in wolf spirits. I'd really like to see whether there's actually anything wrong with yours."He pulled away coldly. Anger flickered in his eyes as he left the room."Erwin, Erwin! Listen to me. Let me explain!"Alyssa scrambled off the bed desperately and shouted his name in an attempt to stop him, but Erwin never turned back. He didn't even look at her again. He summoned a large number of healers and even called in the high priest to examine Lara.To prevent any possibility of bribery or favoritism, he deliberately brought in healers from both inside and outside the pack. He cut off any chance for others to contact them in advance. One healer after another examined Lara. Every single one came to the same conclusion."Alp
