The sound of fists hitting flesh and loud cheers greeted us as we entered the underground arena. It smelled of blood, sweat and wet fur. Wolves stood all around the fighting ring, cheering and booing simultaneously. As we settled on the spot reserved for ranked wolves, Alpha Liam’s lips moved close to my ear. “This is the den,” he told me. I had heard of the existence of this place but never set foot there. “My wolves earn respect and settle scores here.” I tried to act like this was normal, okay, but I did not like it one bit. A place built just for violence. I didn’t think violence was a solution to problems. It was only supposed to be used in extreme situations. As I watched the two fighters in the ring beat each other to a pulp, I winced. They were more brutal than I had imagined. “Why did you bring me here?” I asked. I was pretty sure he could tell I was not one for violence. I did not belong here. His hand sought mine. He leaned over. “You’re going to be my Luna. You need to see what kind of people I rule over. You’ve seen the nice and soft ones. Now it’s time to see real wolves in action. I want you to learn how to stand tall among them.” “What if I can’t do that?” I asked. These people were rowdy and unruly. Most of the fans were sporting dark clothing, piercings and weird hairstyles. They looked like the kind of people I had always tried to avoid. “You will. I’ll make sure no one touches you.” That was reassuring. I’d never felt more safe than I did in that moment. Being next to the alpha made me feel untouchable. Who would dare to touch the Alpha’s chosen one? I could feel the stares from people in the crowd and suspected some of them were talking about me. Maybe they were wondering why the moon would chose me for Alpha Liam. Even I hadn’t stopped thinking about that. Just then, Alpha Liam’s phone rang. He unlocked it and stared at the screen. His jaw clenched. “Is something the matter?” I asked, looking over at him. He nodded. “Border patrol picked up a rogue scent near the lake. Multiple rogues. I have to go and check it out. Don’t move from here.” I looked around. There was no one else on the ranked members seats. I didn’t know whether to be relived or scared. I focused on the fight. “Hey!” I turned. A tall blonde was staring at me. Her forehead and arms were glistening with sweat. A long-jagged scar ran along her thigh. She wore a black tank top and hot pants of the same color. I watched as she climbed over the barrier that separated ranked members from the ordinary people before stalking towards me. “Didn’t think the alpha liked soft girls,” she remarked, staring me up and down. “I guess he needs a pet to play with.” “And you are?” I asked, acting like I was not scared of her. She was bigger and taller than me. If we fought, she could take me down with a finger. “Call me Arlette. I’m Liam’s ex and the reigning champion here. I’m someone you shouldn’t mess with.” “I’d rather not start anything,” I said. “I don’t want any trouble.” She chuckled and walked over to me. Suddenly, she grabbed loose hair from my ponytail. “But I do. I want to give you a little something that will remind you of me whenever you’re together.” I screamed when she tried to pull me up with my hair. To ease the pain, I stood up. She glared at me with her light grey eyes. “You want to be Luna, right?” She asked. “You’ve got to prove that you’re more than just a pretty face.” “I’m not fighting you,” I said. That would be a suicide mission. Only a fool would try to fight a champion. She laughed and raised a fist. I closed my eyes but waited for the impact in vain. All I heard was a growl, followed by a loud thud. I opened my eyes to see Arlette on writhing on the floor. The watchers were no longer looking at the ring. All eyes were on us. Caleb was standing in front of me. “You touch her again,” he told Arlette. “And I’ll rip your throat out.” I heard gasps from the crowd. Arlette got up and started walking away as the crowd booed. “Are you hurt?” Caleb asked me. He looked concerned. His voice wasn’t cold like before. It was warm, almost affectionate. Or maybe I was just reading too much into it. “I’m okay,” I told him. I was now even better that I had seen him. I felt something stirring in me again. “Liam shouldn’t have left you alone. He knows what people here are like. You’re not like them.” “It’s okay,” I said. “I need to get used to them if I’m going to be Luna anyway.” He sighed. “Right.” “Come on,” he said, taking my hand. It was like current zapped me. I pulled my hand away and stared at me with wide eyes. “What was that?” “What was what?” he asked. Didn’t he feel it too? “Nothing,” I said, shaking my head. I couldn’t tell him that I was desiring him. “Let’s go.” He didn’t say anything. He just watched me with his intense eyes. I was about to look away when he spoke. “You cannot run away forever,” he said. “The Luna cannot be weak. You have to learn to face these people.” “What do you mean?” “If you want, I can train you how to fight.” What? Training with him meant being in proximity for extended periods of time. Did I really want that? I looked into his eyes. They had darkened. There was something in them. Maybe, just maybe, he wanted me as much as I wanted him. “Yes, or no?” he asked. Before I could reply, another voice spoke as hands circled around my waist. “What are you doing with my woman?”Stacey.Leaning over the open hood of the broken down SUV, I moved my fingers over the bent radiator. My notebook which had sketches of possible causes of the accident stared at me from the side of the hood. I needed to know the real cause of the accident that involved one of alpha Liam's men. No one was putting much thought into it but I had a feeling something sinister was going on behind the scenes.“Talking to the engine again?”I froze at the sound of his voice. My heart flipped and I made sure not to look up. I knew I couldn’t handle it. I barely glanced at his shadow as he made his way across the car.I stayed focused on the bolt in front of me, tightening it with more force than necessary. “Sometimes engines listen better than people.”He laughed, softly. Leaning against the SUV, he folded his arms across his broad chest and watched me like it was his right to do so. Maybe he did have every right to watch me. After all, he had saved my life twice.“You’re still stubborn,” he
Caleb’s POVThe first time she put the silver in my hand, I thought my skin was being eaten alive.“Hold it,” she said without any sympathy. “Don’t drop it unless you want to die young.” The piece of silver sat in my palm like a burning coal, the edges biting into my skin. I wanted to throw it away but I didn't. My eyes watered and my chest tightened but I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood.“I can’t do this anymore,” The words slipped out before I could stop them. Her face darkened. “You can. You will.”I gritted my teeth as my hand trembled, and smoke rose from where the silver touched my flesh. It sizzled against my skin, and I could smell the sharp tang of burning flesh mixed with metal. I wanted to scream but she stood in front of me with her arms crossed, daring me to make a stupid move.“Pain is your teacher now, boy,” she said. “Better you learn from it here than in the jaws of a wolf who wants you dead.”The woman was known among rogues only as Agnes. No one da
Stacey.I looked around the room. The floor was spotless, as if no one had even stepped on it that day. There was a strong scent of bleach in the air. I moved to the sideboard near the fire. All the glasses containing herbs and conditions were gone. I opened the drawer she had taken the scrolls from. I had seen some documents there but now they were gone. I went and sat on the floor because I was feeling emotionally exhausted. Tears ran down my cheeks as I realized that I had killed Jenny indirectly. If she didn't try to help me make sense of the prophecy, she would still be alive just like my grandmother. Clearly, my grandmother had known that the elders were willing to go very far to protect their secret.I wiped the tears with the back of my hand as I remembered the kind woman who had looked at me like I was her own granddaughter.“I’m sorry,” I whispered as sobs wrecked my body. They were right. I killed Jenny. It did not matter that I wasn’t the one who held the weapon. She wou
Stacey.“Hello?” My voice quivered as I looked around the room. I could hear my own pulse, loud like thunder in my ears. I grabbed the doorknob and twisted it hard but it wouldn’t budge.“Let me out!” I pounded with both fists, each strike making my hands hurt. “Help! Somebody!”I screamed until my throat started burning. I was so scared. Either someone had locked me in from outside or it was the spirits in Jenny's house. I didn't know which one was more terrifying. When I took time to rest and figure out what to do, I started hearing faint voices outside. This made me turn to the door and bang it harder.“I’m in here! Please!”The latch suddenly clicked and the door flew open, nearly throwing me off balance. Daylight flooded the cabin, making me feel relieved.Three women stood outside, holding baskets full of fresh herbs. I knew them. They belonged to our pack.“What happened here?” one of them snapped, her gaze darting from my pale face to Jenny’s lifeless body.“I—I just found her
Stacey.Alpha Liam rolled his eyes when he saw me on the floor.“Not the manipulative tactics,” he said. “Get up, i’ll not fall for that foolishness.”I stood up slowly, keeping my head bowed.“Jenny is an outcast for a reason,” he began. I felt relieved instantly. So that was what he was talking about? I thought it was about me and Caleb. My heartbeat lowered. “Why did you visit her?”“I wanted to know more about the prophecy. My grandmother wouldn't tell me anything about it so I got curious.”“Why did you want to know more about it?” he asked.I glanced up briefly and saw him watching me intently. Should I throw Caleb into the fire? I wondered. I made up my mind pretty quickly.“Caleb said there was something weird about it but he didn't elaborate.”Alpha Liam’s eyes became darker. My eyes flicked to his fingers that had balled into fists.“Why would he mention that to you?” He asked.“I have no idea,” I said.“I heard you received some banned scrolls from Jenny. We’re going back t
Stacey.Caleb left me outside my room without another word. I watched silently as he walked away, tears streaming down my face.I couldn’t believe I had been so stupid to think he'd be different with me. From the stories, he always used and dumped women. He had done it to so many. Only I would be stupid enough to think I was special enough for him. I had to admit he got me really well. I fell for it bad. That night I could barely sleep. My mind was full of regrets. If I didn’t let my feelings wander, I’d be having the best life with Alpha Liam. But now, all I craved was the twin who didn’t want me.Eventually, I was able to get some sleep. When I woke up, I remained in bed for a few minutes thinking about my situation. I decided it was best for me to pretend everything was okay and continue with the wedding plans with Alpha Liam.I didn’t want to lose everything over some rogue twin. I went to work on some new cameras with Micheal. They had been installed at the back of the Alpha's h
